Definitions

  • This invention relates to a brassiere especially for lactating mothers or other women who have a problem with liquid secreting from their breasts.
  • a brassiere comprising a pair of breast supporting cups and supporting straps or the like for supporting the brassiere on a person wearing same, the brassiere being characterized in that each cup has a layer of semi permeable, flexible sheet material that is substantially impermeable to liquids but permeable to gases and vapours extending over at least an appropriate portion of the area of a wall defining the cup.
  • the semi permeable sheet material to extend over substantially the entire area of each cup; for the semi permeable sheet material to be in the form of a laminate with a suitable fabric; for the semi permeable sheet material to form one of a plurality of layers defining the wall of each cup; for the semi permeable sheet material to be a stretchable, woven or non-woven fabric material, in particular a hydrophilic macroporous material and typically made of a suitable polyurethane that may optionally be coated in order to provide it with required properties; for the cups to optionally have pockets located on the operative inside of the semi permeable sheet material for releasably receiving adsorbent pads; and for each cup to have a pleated construction to allow for expansion and contraction of the breast of a feeding mother.
  • semi permeable sheet material is intended to include within its scope any woven or non-woven sheet material that has the inherent property of substantially preventing the transmission of liquids, in particular aqueous liquids, through the membrane whilst allowing gases and vapours to pass therethrough so as to provide the facility for the fabric to breathe.
  • the brassiere itself could be of any conventional or other construction and may have panels or portions of panels defining the cup arranged to be releasably opened for providing an infant access to the breast of a feeding mother without removing the brassiere.
  • Figure 1 is a partly broken away view of one embodiment of brassiere according to the invention taken from the inside thereof;
  • Figure 2 is a similar view of a second embodiment of the invention.
  • Figure 3 is a front outside view of a third embodiment of the invention.
  • a brassiere generally indicated by numeral (1), has a substantially conventional general configuration, and consists of a pair of cups (2); an interconnecting frontal portion (3); securing straps (4) adapted to have their ends (5) joined at the back of a wearer; and a pair of shoulder straps (6).
  • each cup has a layer (7) of a flexible, stretchable, breathing semi permeable sheet material that is especially adapted to prevent liquids from passing therethrough, in particular aqueous liquids, whilst allowing gases and vapours to pass through it.
  • the semi permeable material can be based on a polyurethane, optionally coated to provide or enhance the aforementioned properties and the material could be either in any one of the forms of a fabric, woven or non-woven, or a membrane such as a macro porous membrane,
  • One material that has been found to be particularly suitable is that available under the trade name DRY AIR TEX as membrane number 412 or 330 and marketed by the company Breathetex (Pty) Ltd of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. This particular material is supplied in the form in which the semi permeable layer (7) is laminated to a cotton knit or LycraTM fabric material indicated by numeral (8).
  • each cup has an inner liner (9) made of an aesthetically pleasing and comfortable to wear fabric such as a suitable lace or netting.
  • the brassiere described above will prevent liquid secretions from reaching the outer surface of the brassiere and will, accordingly, prevent wet patches from developing on the outer clothing of a person wearing the brassiere. Nevertheless, as a result of the fact that the semi permeable layer breathes, gases, and in particular, water vapour can pass through the layer.
  • the various layers can be varied widely and more or fewer layers can be used as may be required.
  • the outer layer may be a decorative fashion material having an attractive appearance in which case the semi permeable layer is located inside of that aesthetically pleasing layer.
  • a pocket (10) could be formed for accommodating an adsorbent or absorbent pad (not shown) and to facilitate access to the pocket a releasable flap (11) could be provided.
  • the flap can have a press stud (12) or any other fastener such as a button and hook and loop style fasteners such as those sold under the trade name VELCRO to hold it in the closed position. This feature is illustrated in the right-hand side of Figure 2.
  • FIG. 2 illustrates another variation in which the cup has a series of upright pleats (13) extending from top to bottom to better accommodate expansion and contraction of the breast of a feeding mother.
  • the pleats are directed in opposite directions from a central panel (14).
  • Figure 3 illustrates a still further variation of the basic construction of the brassiere and in this case the entire cup (15) can hinge about a lower attachment zone (16) to a securing strap so that the cup be folded downwards in order to provide easy access to a breast for feeding purposes.
  • Releasable fasteners (17) are once more provided to hold the cup in the closed position relative to a strap (18) and the fasteners can be of any usual type such as press studs, buttons and hook and loop style fasteners such as those sold under the trade name VELCRO.
