Description

PALLET COLLAR
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a pallet collar for pallet packages.
This kind of pallet packages are used in connection with different transport operations of various goods on pallets. In this context, usually occurring transport operations are for example transportation by truck, train or boat. Pallet packages are adapted for providing the transported goods with protection and to simplify and make the handling of the goods more effective. Such pallet packages comprise pallet collars piled on a pallet, wherein one pallet collar is arranged on a pallet and others are piled on top of that.
STATE OF THE ART
Present pallet collars of this type comprise four side plates fixed to each other, forming a rectangular frame. The pallet collars are adapted for arrangement on a pallet, wherein a bottom pallet collar lies against the pallet and remaining pallet collars can be piled on top of each other to suitable height. Usually, the pallet collar positioned on top may be provided with a cover. The pallet collars may be removed from the pallet when required. The plates may be connected with hinges or similar, wherein the pallet collar can be folded when it is not used. Devices for pallet collars comprising plates, of which ends are provided with joint connections to facilitate the mounting of the pallet collars, are also occurring in the prior art. Such a device is disclosed in SE 420474. The joint connections, as described in SE 420474, allow folding of the pallet collars and are designed so that the plates are secured in the folded condition. Further, the joint connections allow separation of the plates from each other.
One drawback with devices of prior art is that they require expensive and specialized mechanical equipment for loading and unloading pallet packages thereof. One example of such expensive and specialized mechanical equipment is a so-called pallet rocker used in attempts to simplify and make the working environment more effective and reduce the risk of occupational injuries.
Another drawback is that the length of the pallet collar is altered when folded as a result of the plates being fixed to each other. This results in a length of the folded pallet collar that is longer than the pallet, which is unfavourable in transporting and handling operations in, for example, returning pallet collars.
Further, pallet collars of prior art imply problems with repairs and maintenance, since the pallet collar then has to be replaced. When damaged pallet collars are to be replaced, the complete pallet has to be reloaded, which is exacting and expensive.
Yet another drawback with present devices is that inspection of the goods is impossible without completely removing all pallet collars of the pallet package.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
One objective of the present invention is to avoid the above-mentioned drawbacks and problems with prior art devices. The pallet collar according to the invention results in that pallet packages can be closed, opened and closed again in a simple manner without risk of affecting or impairing the pallet packaging or its content. The invention also results in that several of such pallet collars can be piled on top of each other to form a rigid and safe pallet package. Further, the invention provides for possibilities of inspection of the transported goods, re-utilization of the pallet collars and cost-efficiency in a more satisfactory manner than present devices.
The present invention comprises a pallet collar having four elongated plates connectable to each other. The plates are essentially rectangular with a first end and a second end. The plates are connectable at the ends of the plates. The plates may be formed in different suitable materials and may be of different length, width and thickness. Preferably, opposite plates are designed with similar dimensions.
Each plate comprises a first closing device at the first end and a second closing device at the second end, wherein a plate can be connected with two adjacent plates. In one embodiment of the invention the ends are arranged so that the closing devices may be mounted immediately thereon. For example, the first end is designed in a similar manner as the second end. The first closing device is designed for detachable connection with the second closing device and the second closing device is designed for detachable connection with the first closing device. Thus, a first plate can be connected with an adjacent second plate arranged in a right angle towards the first plate by means of the first closing device of the first plate and the second closing device of the second plate. The first plate can also be connected with an adjacent third plate arranged in a right angle towards the first plate by means of the second closing device of the first plate and the first closing device of the third plate. A complete pallet collar also comprises a fourth plate, which is connectable with the second plate and the third plate in a corresponding manner, wherein the pallet collar comprises four independent detachable connected plates.
The closing devices comprise a handle arranged on a lock housing and connected with a locking profile. The handle is arranged on the lock housing in a manner allowing the handle to be vertically transferred between a first position for connecting the plates and a second position for disengaging the plates, wherein the locking profile is moved in a corresponding manner. Thus, the handle is designed for controlling the locking profile. The handle may be provided with a quick-acting lock, allowing the handle to be locked in the first position and in the second position by means of apertures of the quick-acting lock, which apertures are arranged in the lock housing.
In one embodiment of the present invention the handle is pivotally arranged on the lock housing by means of a pivoted mechanism, wherein the handle can be turned horizontally, providing a good grip when a plate is to be connected or removed from adjacent plates. For example, the handle is arranged on the lock housing by means of a vertically arranged pin, allowing the handle to be turned about 90°. Thus, the handle is arranged along the extension of the plate in a turned in position and projecting in a right angle from the plate in a turned out position.
The first closing device comprises a first locking profile and the second closing device comprises a second locking profile. The first locking profile and the second locking profile are designed for detachable connection with each other. The locking profiles may be designed in a plurality of different ways. Preferably the locking profiles are designed with a groove allowing the locking profiles to be inserted into each other. For example, the first locking profile is designed with an L-shaped cavity and the second locking profile is designed with an L-shaped extension having a ball portion, wherein the aperture is arranged for receiving the extension and the ball portion, forming a ball joint. In an alternative embodiment of the invention the closing devices may comprise an electromagnetic locking mechanism, wherein the closing devices can be connected and disconnected by means of magnets under the influence of electricity. The first locking profile is connected with the second locking profile when the handle is in its first position. The first locking profile is disconnected from the second locking profile when the handle is in its second position. By this manner the plates of the pallet collar may be connected and separated by means of the handle. Further, the closing devices may comprise a guiding sheet arranged vertically projectible from the lock housing, for bearing against the outer surface of an underlying plate or a slot in the plate. The guiding sheet is designed to prevent the pallet collar from horizontal movement and from being moved out of position when the guiding sheet is projected from the lock housing. Further, the guiding sheet provides a more rigid pallet package. For example, the guiding sheet is provided with a vertically elongated aperture allowing the pallet collar to bear against the pallet for fastening thereof to the pallet. The pallet collar is for example fastened to the pallet by means of a screw arranged through the aperture of the guiding sheet. The guiding sheet is movably connected with the handle by means of a first lifter extending through the elongated aperture, wherein the guiding sheet can be moved vertically a distance corresponding to the elongated aperture independent of the position of the handle. Thus, the guiding sheet is arranged projecting from the lock housing when the handle is in its first position but can be brought to a non-projecting position even though the handle is in its first position. Further, the guiding sheet is arranged non- projecting from the lock housing when the handle is in its second position. The closing devices may also comprise a vertically movable blocking pin arranged in the lock housing. In a first position the blocking pin projects vertically from the lock housing and, for example, down through a corresponding aperture of the closing device of an immediately underlying plate. In a second position the blocking pin is enclosed by the lock housing and, thus, not projecting down into the underlying plate. The blocking pin is designed to prevent the pallet collar from horizontal movement and from being moved out of position, which results in a rigid and safe construction even though the guiding sheet should be damaged or in another way stop functioning. For applications involving intermediate bases for positioning between the pallet collars, the blocking pin extends through holes in the intermediate bases, wherein the intermediate bases are fastened. By this manner intermediate bases may also be used for the pallet package, which is advantageous for transporting certain types of goods and for exposing such goods in, for example, a store. The blocking pin is connected with the handle through a spring, wherein the blocking pin can be vertically moved. By means of the spring the blocking pin is spring-loaded to the projected position, but can be enclosed by or project a short distance from the lock housing when the handle is in its lower first position. The blocking pin is enclosed by the lock housing when the handle is in its upper second position.
When the plates not are mounted to a pallet collar, for example when returning the pallet collars, the closing devices are suitably locked in the second position of the handle by means of the quick-acting lock, wherein the guiding sheet and the blocking pin do not project from the lock housing. By this manner damages on the guiding sheet and the blocking pin are avoided.
Further, the closing devices may comprise a second lifter for moving the guiding sheet of an overlying and adjacent plate to disconnect the plates. The second lifter is connected with the handle, wherein the second lifter can be vertically moved. The second lifter is arranged to avoid influence on the guiding sheet of overlying plate when the handle is in its first position. When the handle is brought to its second position the second lifter is brought along therewith and pushes the guiding sheet of the overlying plate upwards. The closing devices may also be provided with an end portion for removing the blocking pin of the overlying and adjacent plate. The end portion is designed in a similar manner as the second lifter.
To connect, for example, the first closing device of the first plate with the second closing device of the second plate only operation of the handle of the first closing device is required, provided that the handle of the second closing device is in its first position. The handle of the first closing device is unlocked by means of the quick-acting lock and is horizontally turned out from the plate. Then, the handle is brought from its second position to its first position, wherein the locking profile, the guiding sheet and the blocking pin is brought along therewith. The locking profile engages the locking profile of the second closing device, the guiding sheet projects a distance over an underlying and adjacent plate and the blocking pin projects a distance down into the underlying and adjacent plate. Then, the handle is horizontally turned back into its first position and is locked by means of the quick-acting lock. The second closing device is connected with the first closing device in a corresponding manner.
To disconnect the first closing device of the first plate the handle of the first plate is unlocked by means of the quick-acting lock and is horizontally turned out from the plate. Then, the handle is brought from its first position to its second position, wherein the locking profile is disconnected, the guiding sheet and the blocking pin are brought to a non-projecting position and the second lifter and the end portion disconnect the closing device from the guiding sheet and the blocking pin, respectively, of an overlying and adjacent plate. Then, the handle is turned back to its second position and is locked by means of the quick-acting lock. The second closing device is disconnected from the first closing device in a corresponding manner.
In one embodiment of the invention the closing device comprises an aperture allowing pallet collars to lock to each other for protection against theft. The aperture is designed for individual locking units preventing the separation of one individual pallet collar. The aperture is also designed for equilateral rim locks, which imply that several pallet collars may be blocked at the same time by means of cylinder locks or padlocks. The aperture may be sealed with a plastic plug when an unlocked pallet collar is desired.

DESCRIPTION
With reference to Fig. 1 a pallet package 11 arranged on a pallet 10 is illustrated. The pallet package 11 comprises a number of pallet collars 12 connected with each other. The pallet collar 12 is designed for mounting on the pallet 10 and to be piled on the pallet 10 to a suitable height. In the illustrated embodiment, the pallet package 11 comprises five pallet collars 12 but is not in any way limited to this number.
The pallet collar 12 comprises a number of elongated plates 13 detachably connected to each other. Preferably the pallet collar 12 comprises four essentially rectangular plates 13. The plates 13 are connectable perpendicular to each other at the vertical ends of the plates 13. The plate 13 is formed in a suitable material, such as plastic materials, metal or wood, and may be of alternating length, width and thickness. Preferably, opposite plates 13 of the pallet collar 12 are formed with equivalent dimensions. With reference to Fig. 2 the plate 13 comprises a first closing device 14 and a second closing device 15. The first closing device 14 is designed for removable connection with the second closing device 15 of another plate and the second closing device 15 is designed for removable connection with the first closing device of yet another plate. The closing devices 14, 15 are arranged at the ends of the plates, wherein adjacent arranged plates 15 can be detachably connected. For example, the first closing device 14 is arranged at a first end of the plate 13 and the second closing device is arranged at a second end of the plate 13. The closing devices 14, 15 comprise a handle 17 movably arranged on a lock housing 16. The handle 17 of the first closing device 15 is connected with a first locking profile 18 and the handle 17 of the second closing device 15 is connected with a second locking profile 19. For example, the locking profiles 18, 19 are partially arranged inside the lock housing 16. For example, the handle 17 is connected with the locking profiles 18, 19 through an elongated aperture in the lock housing 16. Further, the handle 17 is arranged so that the handle 17 can be moved vertically, wherein the locking profiles 18, 19 are moved in a corresponding manner. The handle 17 is arranged on the lock housing, wherein the handle 17 can be vertically transferred between a first lower position for connection of the plates 13 and a second upper position for disconnecting the plates 13.
With reference to Fig. 3a and Fig. 3b, the closing devices 14, 15 comprise a quick-acting lock 20, wherein the handle can be fastened to the lock housing in the first position and in the second position. Fig. 3a shows the handle 17 in the second position and Fig. 3b shows the handle 17 in the first position.
In one embodiment of the invention the lock housing 16 comprises a hole 21 allowing fastening of the plates 13 to a pallet collar 12 by means of, for example, conventional locking devices, wherein the pallet collar 12 can not be dismounted. Further, the hole 21 allows fastening of several pallet collars 12 to each other.
The closing devices 14, 15 further comprise a guiding sheet 22 arranged vertically projectible from the lock housing 16, for example for bearing against the outer surface of a immediately underlying plate. The guiding sheet 22 is designed to prevent the pallet collar 12 from horizontal movement and from moving out of position when the guiding sheet 22 is projected from the lock housing 16. In one embodiment of the invention, not shown, the guiding sheet 22 is designed to be brought into an aperture in an immediately underlying plate. The guiding sheet 22 is further provided with a vertically elongated aperture 28 allowing the pallet collar 12 bearing against the pallet 10 to be fastened thereto. For example, the pallet collar 12 is fastened to the pallet 10 by means of a screw extending through the aperture 28 of the guiding sheet 22. The guiding sheet 22 is movably connected with the handle 17 through a pin extending through the elongated aperture 28, wherein the guiding sheet 22 can be moved vertically a distance corresponding to the length of the vertically elongated aperture 28, independent of the position of the handle 17. Thus, the guiding sheet 22 is arranged projecting from the lock housing 16 when the handle 17 is in its first position but can be brought to a non-projecting position even though the handle 17 is in its first position. Further, the guiding sheet 22 is arranged non-projecting from the lock housing when the handle 17 is in its second position. The closing devices 14, 15 also comprise a vertically movable blocking pin 23 arranged in the lock housing 16. The blocking pin 23 is connected with the handle 17, wherein the blocking pin 23 can be moved vertically. The blocking pin 23 is enclosed by the lock housing 16 when the handle 17 is in the second position and projectible into immediately underlying plate when the handle 17 is in the first position. For example, the blocking pin 23 is projectible into a slot arranged in the immediately underlying plate. The blocking pin 23 is designed to prevent horizontal movement of the pallet collar 12.
With reference to Fig. 4a two plates 13 connected by means of the closing devices 14, 15 are illustrated. The locking profiles 18, 19 can be designed in several different ways and are not in limited to the described exemplary embodiments. In the illustrated embodiment the first locking profile 18 is designed with a an L-shaped cavity and the second locking profile 19 is designed with an L-shaped extension having a ball portion, wherein the aperture is designed for receiving the extension and the ball portion, forming a ball joint mechanism. The locking profiles 18, 19 are formed with apertures displaced vertically to each other, and profile elements arranged in between. In an unlocked position a profile element is positioned towards an aperture. In a locked position the profile elements are engaged and the apertures are positioned towards each other. Thus, the locking profiles 18, 19 are formed with grooves allowing the locking profiles 18, 19 to be brought into each other in a vertical direction to connect the closing devices 14, 15 and to be brought out of each other to disconnect the closing devices14, 15. For example, the first locking profile 18 comprises several sets of L-shaped cavities and the second locking profile 19 comprises several sets of L-shaped extensions arranged in a suitable interval, allowing . connection and disconnection of the closing devices 14, 15. With reference also to Fig. 4b and Fig. 4c the first closing device 14 is disconnected from the second closing device 15 through unlocking of the handle 17 by means of the quick-acting lock 20. In one embodiment of the present invention the handle is pivotally arranged on the lock housing 16 in a direction illustrated by the arrow A by means of a hinged mechanism, wherein the handle 17 can be turned horizontally to provide a good grip when a plate 13 is to be connected or removed from adjacent plates 13. For example, the handle is arranged on the lock housing 16 through a vertical pin, wherein the handle is turning about 90°. Thus, the handle 17 is arranged along the extension of the plate 13 in a turned-in position and projecting perpendicular from the plate 13 in a turned-out position.
Then, the handle 17 is brought vertically from the first lower position to the second upper position, wherein the first locking profile 18 is disconnected from the second locking profile 19. The disconnected plate 13 can be removed from or brought against adjacent plates in a direction illustrated by the arrow B. The handle 17 can then be turned back towards the lock housing 16 and, by means of the quick-acting lock 20, be locked when the handle is in the second position. With reference to Fig. 5a and Fig. 5b the second closing device 15 is connected with the first closing device 14 by bringing the plate 13 in a direction illustrated by the arrow C to a suitable position by means of the handle 17. Then, the handle 17 is brought vertically from the second position to the first position, wherein the second locking profile 19 is connected with the first locking profile 18. The handle can then be turned towards the lock housing 16 in a direction illustrated by the arrow D, and be locked when the handle 17 is in the first position by means of the quick-acting lock.
With reference to Fig. 6a illustrating one embodiment of the invention, two plates 13 are connected by means of the locking profiles 18, 19. The lock housing 16 is suitably designed with an end angled about 45° for good bearing against the corresponding end of the lock housing 16 of an adjacent plate 13. The lock housing may be provided with the blocking pin 23, which may be arranged, for example, in a slot in the lock housing 16. The guiding sheet 22 may, as previously described, extend along the outer surface of the lock housing 16. Alternatively, the guiding sheet 22 may also be enclosed by the lock housing 16 when the handle 17 is in the second position and be projectable into an underlying and adjacent lock housing 16 when the handle 17 is in the first position. With reference to Fig. 6b and Fig. 6d the closing devices 14, 15 comprise a first lifter 24 connected with the handle 17 and a second lifter 25 connected with the handle 17. The first lifter 24 extends through the oval aperture 28 of the guiding sheet 22 and is arranged so that the guiding sheet 22 is movable vertically along the oval aperture 28, but not horizontally, wherein the guiding sheet 22 is not projectible from the lock housing 16 when the handle is in the second position and projectible when the handle is in the first position. For example, the guiding sheet 22 can project from the lock housing 16 along or into the lock housing 16 of the underlying and adjacent plate 13 by means of gravity. The second lifter 25 is designed for disconnecting the closing device
14, 15 from the guiding sheet 22 of the overlying and adjacent closing device 14, 15. For example, the second lifter is arranged to bear against the lowest portion of the overlying and adjacent guiding sheet 22, wherein the second lifter 25 vertically moves the overlying guiding sheet 22 when the handle 17 is transferred from the first position to the second position. When the handle is transferred from the second position to the first position the guiding sheet 22 of the overlying closing device 14, 15 is brought therewith by means of gravity.
Preferably, the blocking pin 23 is connected with the handle 17 through a spring 26, wherein the blocking pin 23 is spring-loaded and projectible down into the closing device 14, 15 of an underlying and adjacent plate 13 when the handle is in the first position. The blocking pin 23 is, as previously described, not projecting when the handle 17 is in the second position. For example, the movement of the blocking pin 23 is limited by means of a set screw or in a similar conventional manner.
Further, the closing device 14, 15 comprises an end portion 27 connected with the handle 17, for disconnecting the closing device 14, 15 from the blocking pin 23 of an overlying and adjacent closing device 14, 15. For example, the end portion 27 is arranged for bearing against the lowest portion of the overlying and adjacent blocking pin 23, wherein the end portion 27 moves the overlying and adjacent blocking pin 23 when the handle 17 is transferred from the first position to the second position. When the handle 17 is transferred from the second position to the first position the blocking pin 23 of the overlying closing device 14, 15 is brought along therewith by means of the spring 26.
To remove the plate 13 of the pallet package 11 the closing devices 14, 15 are disconnected by, firstly unlocking the handle 17 locked in the first position by means of the quick-acting lock 20. The handle 17 is turned out from the plate 13, wherein the handle 17 perpendicularly projects from the plate 13 and the lock housing 16. The handle 17 is brought from the first position to the second position, wherein the locking profiles 18, 19 are disconnected from the locking profiles 18, 19 of the closing devices 14, 15 of the same pallet collar 12, the guiding sheet 22 and the blocking pin 23 are disconnected from the closing device 14, 15 of the underlying and adjacent plate 13, the second lifter 25 disconnects the plate 13 from the guiding sheet 22 of the overlying and adjacent plate 13 and the end portion 27 disconnects the plate 13 from the blocking pin 23 of the overlying and adjacent plate 13.
With reference to Fig. 7a an exemplary embodiment is illustrated of the locking profiles 18, 19. The locking profiles 18, 19 are designed with vertically displaced apertures, and profile elements arranged in between. In the illustrated embodiment the second locking profile 19 comprises cylindrical dowels 29. The first locking profile 18 comprises tubular elements 30 for receiving the dowels 29. In a locked position the dowels 29 are engaging the tubular elements 30 and the apertures are positioned towards each other. Thus, the locking profiles 18, 19 are designed to be vertically brought into each other for connecting the closing devices 14, 15 and to be vertically brought out of each other to disconnect the closing devices 14, 15.
With reference to Fig. 7b yet another exemplary embodiment is illustrated of the locking profiles 18, 19. The locking profiles 18, 19 are designed with vertically displaced apertures and profile elements arranged in between. In the illustrated embodiment the profile element of the second locking profile 19 designed with curved extensions 31. Ball portions are arranged in the ends of the extensions 31. The profile element of the first locking profile 18 is designed with grooves 32 corresponding to the extensions 31 , wherein the grooves 32 are designed for receiving the extensions 31 and the ball portions, forming a ball joint mechanism. In a disconnected position the profile elements are positioned towards an aperture. In a connected position the extensions 31 are engaging the grooves 32 and the apertures are positioned towards each other. Thus, the locking profiles 18, 19 can be designed in several different manners and are not in any way limited to the example described herein.
