- the break mechanism has two links 5 and 6 connected through respective pivots 5a and 6a with the lever arm 2 and through pivots 5b and 6b with the handle 4.
- the projection of each line through the pivots of each link converge towards the drive head 1 and the respective lines intersect at the centre of rotation of the drive head. This configuration ensures that the break point at the set torque does not vary in dependence on the exact point at which the force is applied to the handle 4.
- the links 5 and 6 are connected together through a brace 7 attached to each link by a pivot 7a and 7b.
- a lever arm 8 is connected with the link 5 through a pivot 8a and supports a cam follower 9 being a roller mounted on arm 8 through an axle. The roller engages a profile 7c, in the nature of a detent, on the facing surface of the brace 7.
- links 5 and 6 and handle 4 all lie symmetrically about the longitudinal axis of the wrench, with the roller 9 lying in the detent 7c.
- the end of the lever arm 8 remote from the pivot 8a has a roller 8b which abuts the end of plunger 10.
- Plunger 10 is supported within the handle 4 and is urged into engagement with the roller 8b by spring mechanism 11 which can be adjusted as to the force applied to the end of the arm 8.

- Fig 5b shows a similar plot to that of Fig. 5a but with the break mechanism of this invention. As seen the break occurs at A and the torque thereafter reduces as the roller 9 moves from the profile 7c to the point B. During this motion the operator has time to relieve the force applied as the handle 4 is moving to the position of Fig. 2 gradually against significant spring force without the sudden break.
