Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method of joining two or more units of insulating material, as well as the use of a fastener for carrying out said method.
- SE-C2-507549 discloses a fastening element and a method of fastening such insulating units to each other.
- This fastening element is in the form of a helix shaped screw composed of a helix formed head and a helix formed wire. The helix shaped screw is screwed into the insulating materials to be joined together. The joint provided by use of this helix shaped screw is generally acceptable.
- the objective of the invention is thus to provide a method of joining two or more units of insulating material to each other which method does not have the drawbacks of the known methods as disclosed above.
- the invention comprises the use of a fastener for joining two or more units of insulating material to each other.
- the fastener for use according to the invention comprises a head and a body extending from its head.
- the body has an elongated shape comprising a first section and a second section, wherein this first section is connected to the head.
- the head may also be made of the same material as that of the first section and may be shaped in direct prolongation of the first section of the body.
- a first horizontal plane is defined as the plane perpendicular to the extending direction of the first section of the body and containing the point of connection between the head and the body.
- the second section is connected to the first section in an angle between 45 and 135 degrees, preferably between 85 and 95 degrees, and more preferably around 90 degrees relative to the first section.
- the head of the fastener extends beyond the first horizontal plane as defined above.
- the head should preferably be in the form of a 0.5-10 mm thick disc arranged in said first horizontal plane. If the head is not arranged in the first horizontal plane, the head may protrude out of the connected insulation material units, and such protrusion is in general undesired.
- the periphery of the disk may have any size and shape, provided that the head is sufficiently large to act as a hook and prevent the head from penetrating through the insulating unit.
- the head should be in the form of a disk with a periphery surrounding an area of at least 20 mm 2 , and if the insulating units contain mineral fibres, the area should preferably be at least 100 mm 2 .
- the shape of the head or the periphery is in general not important and may include any rounded shapes, e.g. oval or circular, as well as any angular shapes e.g. triangular, quadrangular, pentagonal, hexagonal, etc.
- the head should preferably have some kind of knot or recess e.g. one or more holes or grooves, which knot or recess fits into a tool e.g. a screwdriver or similar tool by use of which the fastener can be turned.
- a tool e.g. a screwdriver or similar tool by use of which the fastener can be turned.
- the head arranged in said first horizontal plane is preferably made of the same material as that of the first section of the body and may be shaped in the form of an essentially circular spiral, which prolongs directly from the first section of the body.
- the head could also preferably be covered by a capsule in order to minimize/prevent the filtering of the fasteners into each other.
- a capsule in order to minimize/prevent the filtering of the fasteners into each other.
- filtering can also be minimized by letting the spiral close into itself/join itself.
- the length of the body should be specific, selected for the particular use. The thicker the insulating units are, the longer the body should be. In general, the length of the body should be sufficiently long so that the fastener can penetrate at least 0.5, preferably at least 1 cm into the thickness of the outermost insulating unit (the unit farthest from the head of the fastener) , and penetrate the one or more other inner most insulating unit(s) . In most situations it is preferred that the length of the body should be between 10 and 200 mm, more preferably between 20 and 100 mm. The length of the body is defined as the perpendicular distance between the first horizontal plane and a second horizontal plane parallel to the first horizontal plane and containing a tangent to the point of the body farthest from the first horizontal plane.
- the second section is the first section in an angle between 45 and 135 degrees, preferably between 85 and 95 degrees, and more preferably around 90 degrees relative to the first section.
- the second section of the body is connected to a protrusion from the first section of the body to provide an angle as described above between the first and the second section.
- the protrusion of the second section from the first section provides the body with a total width extension of the body which should preferably be between 3 and 40 mm, more preferably between 10 and 20 mm.
- the width extension of the body is defined as the maximum perpendicular distance between a first and a second vertical plane perpendicular to said first horizontal plane and touching said body.
- the body may e.g. have a T-formed or L-formed shape, wherein the vertical part of the T or L constitutes the first section of the body, and the horizontal part of the T or L constitutes the second section of the body. Due to providing a fastener which is both cheap and easy to produce it is, however, preferred that the fastener is shaped as a bent nail.
- the body may preferably have an angular or round cross- section i.e. be shaped as an angular or round rod e.g. being oval or circular, as well as any angular shapes e.g. triangular, quadrangular, pentagonal, and hexagonal, which rod preferably has a maximum diameter of between 0.5 and 5 mm.
- the cross-section or the diameter of the body may preferably be substantially equal to the diameter in its first section and more preferably the second section may have a similar diameter throughout its length besides a tip portion, which tip portion comprises a cone-shaped tip.
- the body and head may be made from similar or from distinct materials.
- Preferred materials for both head and body include any metals, preferably steel and brass, and further the preferred materials include polymers, preferably polymers with a relatively high flexural rigidity, e.g. polystyrene, polycarbonate, polypropylene and polyamide.
- the second section of the body may e.g. be coated with an expandable composition i.e. a composition which expands when subjected to heat, moisture, microwave or similar.
- the expandable composition could preferably be glue or paint which expands under influence of heat.
- the method according to the invention of joining two or more units of insulating material to each other comprises the steps of
- the fastener for use in the method may preferably comprise a head and a body extending from said head and have an elongated shape comprising a first section connected to the head and a second connected to said first section in an angle between 45 and 135 relative to the first section, said first and said second sections preferably being in the form of a bent rod.
- the fasteners described above are particularly useful in the method according to the claims.
- the units of insulating material may in principle be of any type which can be penetrated by the fastener particularly foam e.g. polyurethane foam and mineral wool e.g. rock, slag, glass and similar vitreous materials.
- foam e.g. polyurethane foam and mineral wool e.g. rock, slag, glass and similar vitreous materials.
- the units of insulating material may have any desired size.
- the shape of the units of insulating material may also be as desired, but it is preferred that the surfaces of the units of insulating material which are supposed to face each other in the step of connection have shapes which correspond to each other to provide a tight connection.
- the fastener (s) are turned e.g. at least 5 degrees, preferably at least 45 degrees and most preferably around 90 degrees.
- the number of fasteners used connecting two or more units of insulating material to each other depends on the size of the units and the desired strength of the connection. The skilled person will by use of a few tests be able to find the optimal number of fasteners for a specific connection of units of insulating material.
- the units to be connected are held together in the desired formation and the one or more fasteners are inserted into the units of material to thereby join the units of insulating material together.
- the units of insulating material may be compressed during the fastening of the fasteners.
- Another or additional way to obtain a highly tight fastening is to further add glue between the surfaces to be connected. The amount of glue can be much lower than when using glue alone. Also it is possible to use glue with less tack as the fastener will hold the units of insulating material together.
- the fastener is inserted into and penetrates a first unit and optionally further units of insulating material designated as the innermost unit(s) of insulating material, and therefrom further inserted partly into an outermost unit of insulating material and finally turned at least 5 degrees.
- the outermost unit of insulating material i.e. the unit of insulating material which is supposed to contain the second section of the body is in the form of an insulating material based on mineral wool.
- mineral wool insulating units generally comprise naturally formed layers, i.e. like layers in a book.
- the fastener while being inserted into the outermost unit is held in a position where it fits in between the layers of the outermost unit i.e.
- the second section is extending in the direction + about 15 degrees of the main direction of the layers of the outermost unit, more preferably, the fastener while being inserted into the outermost unit is held in a position where a third vertical plane containing the extension direction of the second section of the body is substantially parallel with the main direction of the layers of the outermost unit of insulating material, wherein the third vertical plane is perpendicular to the first horizontal plane.

- the head 51 shown in fig. 5 has a substantially circular periphery and comprises two depressions or through-going holes 52 for inserting a tool and turning the fastener as described above.
- the head 61 shown in figure 6 is shaped as an essentially circular spiral which may prolong directly from the first section of the body.
- the exterior arm 62 of the spiral comprising the head may close into itself so as to provide a contact point 63, thereby preventing the filtering of the fasteners into each other.
- the vertical plane defined by the first portion 64 of the circular spiral comprising the head 61 is substantially parallel to the vertical plane defined by the length direction of the second section of the body. This feature allows the user to known the orientation of said second section while installing the fasteners.
- Fig. 2 shows a variation of the fastener of fig. 1 for use in the invention.
- the fastener comprises a head 21, and a body 22.
- the body comprises a first section 23 connected to the head and a second section 24, connected to the first section.
- the body sections 23 and 24 may be made in one part and bent to provide the preferred angle A which in the fastener of fig. 2 is smaller than in the fastener of fig. 1.
- the fastener comprises a head 31 and a body 32.
- the body comprises a first section 33 connected to the head and a second section 34, connected to the first section.
- the first and second sections of the body 32 are shaped as a T and thereby provides two angles Al and A2 which are substantially equal to each other.
- the angles Al and A2 may vary individually from each other, but preferably within the interval between 45 and 135 degrees.
