- the present invention relates to the seat backs of motor vehicles. More particularly, the invention relates to a vehicle seat backrest which comprises, on the one hand, a rigid frame comprising first and second lateral uprights and upper and lower crossbeams connecting together said first and second lateral uprights, and on the other hand, an elastic support ply fixed to the rigid frame and arranged to be directly in contact with the user's back.
- the lateral uprights as well as the upper and lower crosspieces forming the rigid frame are constituted by tubes and the elastic support ply is directly fixed on the inner periphery of the frame.
- the support ply is therefore in a substantially rectangular shape and it comprises over its entire outer periphery fastening elements which are intended to cooperate with complementary members also arranged on the inner periphery of the rigid frame. It is therefore understood that the mounting of the support ply on the frame requires fixing the fastening elements of said ply one after the other on the complementary members of the rigid frame, which complicates and considerably increases the time and cost of the 'folder assembly.
- the present invention aims to overcome the drawbacks mentioned above.
- the invention achieves its object by the fact that the support ply comprises a front face and a rear face each having upper and lower edges and first and second lateral edges, said front and rear faces being integral with one of the other, on the one hand, at the level of their upper and lower edges, and on the other hand, at their first lateral edge so that the support ply forms a pocket intended to be fitted on the rigid frame by the first lateral upright by surrounding the upper and lower crosspieces and the first lateral upright, and in that the second lateral edges of the front and rear faces of the elastic support ply are fixed on the second lateral upright.
- the elastic support ply which forms a pocket can be directly threaded onto the rigid frame by one of its lateral uprights, then be fixed only on the other of the lateral uprights, thereby making it possible to simplify and reduce significantly the assembly time of the backrest intended to be mounted on a vehicle seat cushion.
- the second lateral upright is constituted by a flange which has a thickness greater than the thicknesses of the first lateral upright and of the upper and lower crosspieces perpendicular to the front face of the elastic support ply;
- the first lateral upright and the upper and lower crossbars are made from the same tube substantially U-shaped;
- the lateral flange comprises a rear edge and a front edge intended to be facing the back of the user, said front edge having a shape substantially identical to the first lateral upright;
- the lateral flange comprises an external face, arranged away from the first lateral upright, which comprises first and second series of hooks, and the second lateral edges of the front and rear faces of the elastic support ply respectively comprise first and second series of hems into which are respectively threaded first and second rigid rods which are kept fixed on the first and second series of hooks by means of the elastic return exerted by the front and rear faces of the elastic support ply;
- the lateral flange comprises an upper end and a lower end respectively welded to the upper and lower crosspieces;

- the first lateral strut 41 as well as the 'cross top 42 and bottom 43 are formed by tubes which may be welded together or be made in a single piece 4 formed by bending.
- the lateral tube 41 and the upper 42 and lower 43 tubes have a circular section of small diameter, for example of the order of 3 cm.
- the ends of the upper 42 and lower 43 tubes, opposite the lateral tube 41, are fixed to the lateral flange 5 which extends substantially vertically between an upper end 51 and a lower end 52.
- the lateral flange 5 further comprises an inner face 53 disposed opposite the lateral tube 41 and an outer face 54 disposed away from said lateral tube 41. These inner 53 and outer 54 faces of the lateral flange 5 are delimited between them by a rear edge 56 and a front edge 55 intended to be facing the back of an occupant of the seat.

- the front 6 and rear 7 faces are integral with one another, on the one hand, at the level of their upper edges 62, 72 and lower 63, 73, and on the other hand, at their first lateral edge 61, 71.
- the front 6 and rear 7 faces can be connected together by sewing or else be made in one room.
- the second lateral edges 64, 74 of the front 6 and rear 7 faces of the ply respectively comprise a first series of hems 20 and a second series of hems 21 in which are respectively threaded a first rigid rod 22 and a second rigid rod 23.

- the outer face 54 of the lateral flange can also be provided, at its lower end 52, with an articulation mechanism 14 intended to be connected to the seat 10 of the seat to allow the backrest 1 to pivot around a horizontal axis Y and substantially parallel to the front face 6 of the elastic support ply 3.
- the rigid frame 2 of the backrest is disposed between the lateral flanges 11 and 12 of the seat 10 so that a pivot 15 located at the lower end of the lateral tube 41 is housed in a hole 12a in the lateral flange 12 of the seat, while the articulation mechanism 14 is directly located in a suitable housing formed on the inner face of the flange 11 of the seat.
- the two flanges 11 and 12 of the seat are interconnected by means of two spacers 18 and 19.
- the articulation mechanism 14 is controlled by a handle 16 attached to the casing 17 covering the outer face 54 of the lateral flange 5, said handle 16 being connected to the articulation mechanism 14 by means of a rigid connecting bar (not shown) passing through a hole 11a formed on the flange 11 of the seat 10.
- the housing 17 also includes an orifice 17a to allow the passage of the seat belt 9 and a cover 17b intended to separate from the housing during the deployment of the airbag.
- the front edge 55 of the lateral flange 5 and the lateral tube 41 of the frame 4 have a substantially identical shape in order to offer symmetrical lateral supports to the occupant of the vehicle seat.
- the casing 17 and the lateral tube 41 each have a substantially convex forward portion in order to provide lumbar support to the occupant of the seat.
