Definitions
- the present invention relates to a novel closure mechanism and in particular to a magnetically operated closure mechanism for doors and the like.
- Standard entries include two essential parts: a frame disposed in the entry way and a door hinged thereto for opening and closing the entrance.
- a locking mechanism mounted in the door enables a person to close or lock the door.
- a common locking mechanism contains a closing element, such as a spring operated latch bolt, for holding a door closed and a permanent locking device such as a dead bolt which enables locking and unlocking the closed door.
- a rotation of the door's handle retracts the latch and allows opening of the closed door. In the idle position of the door the latch extends from the door edge outwardly.
- the latch bolt is smaller than the opening in the strike plate into which it is secured when the door is closed. This feature enables easy installation of the lock relative to the strike plate. Unfortunately, this feature also leaves space between the latch bolt and the aperture of the strike plate giving rise to a most irritating noise of a banging door generated in windy weather.
- Locking devices using magnets for closing cabinets or boxes doors are also known, some of which are disclosed in the following publications: US 3,492,037, 3,600,025, 3,790,197, 3,794,366, 3,934,909, 4,026,588, 4,270,781 and 5,485,733.
- the present invention aims at providing a closure mechanism that overcomes the drawbacks of the prior art.
- the present invention relates to a novel closure mechanism for doors and windows and in particular to a magnetically operated closure mechanism.
- This mechanism has only one or two moving parts (a magnet and optionally a spring) so that in case of failure, a vigorous push will open the door without damaging the door or the door jamb.
- the present invention thus provides a closure mechanism to be mounted in doors and windows for holding the doors and windows closed against a metal plate on a door jamb, said closure mechanism comprising: a housing made of non-magnetizable material, a round diametrical magnet mounted in said housing for rotation around its center, two ferro-magnetic elements fixedly mounted to the housing parallel to each other on opposite sides of and proximate to the diametric magnet, said elements having ferro-magnetic extensions protruding beyond said housing, said elements and extensions subject to being magnetized and demagnetized by the rotation of the diametric magnet, actuating means for rotating said diametric magnet, and means for returning the rotated diametric magnet to its original position, whereby when the diametric magnet is in a normal orientation and the extensions of the ferro-magnetic elements contact the metal plate of a door jamb, the ferro-magnetic elements and extensions are magnetized and will be attracted magnetically to the metal plate, keeping the door closed, and whereby when the diametric magnet is
- the means for returning the rotated diametric magnet to its normal orientation is a tensioned spring.
- ferro-magnetic extensions are comprised of substantially flat metal projections.
- the closure mechanism is incorporated in a locking mechanism including a dead bolt so as to provide temporary closing and permanent locking options in a single device.
- a still further preferred embodiment comprises a closure mechanism wherein the diametrical magnet is a double magnet with two north and two south poles, and a second pair of ferro-magnetic elements positioned such that when the diametric magnet is rotated 45° the extensions of the ferro-magnetic elements will be demagnetized.
- the present invention provides a method for closing and opening a door or window with the aid of a reversible magnetic mechanism.
- Fig. 1 is a schematic side perspective view of a closure mechanism for mounting in a door in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention
- Fig. 2 shows an enlarged cross-section of a closed door with a closure mechanism of Fig. 1 taken along line A- A;
- Fig. 3 is a plan view of the closure mechanism in Fig. 1 in a normal orientation for keeping a door closed;
- Fig. 4 is a plan view of the closure mechanism in Fig. 1, in an actuated orientation for opening a door;
- Fig. 5 is a schematic side perspective view of a closure mechanism of Fig. 3 including also a dead bolt locking mechanism according to the invention
- Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate in schematic side perspective view an alternate embodiment of this invention in normal and activated orientations, respectively;
- Figs. 8 and 9 show windows containing closure mechanisms of the invention in closed and open orientation, respectively.
- a door mountable closure mechanism 10 comprising a housing including a back plate 12 and a front edge plate 14 which is at right angles to the back plate 12.
- Plates 12 and 14 must not be made of ferromagnetic material, but rather from aluminum or plastic or the like that cannot be magnetized.
- Two arc shaped ferromagnetic elements 16 and 18 are mounted on the back plate 12 opposite one another with the concave arcs 15 and 17 forming a circle.
- a diametric round magnet 20 is mounted within the circle on plate 12 between the elements 16 and 18 and maintained in a rotateable position therein by a spindle 22 (see Fig. 3) traversing the center of the magnet 20 through plate 12.
- the diametric magnet 20 has an arced north polarity 34 and an opposite arced south polarity 36 which are normally in alignment with the arcs 15 and 17 of the ferromagnetic elements 16 and 18, respectively, so that elements 16, 18 and their extensions 30, 32 are normally in a magnetized state when the extensions make contact with a metal plate 42 on the door jamb. This is because a magnetic field 38 forms a complete circuit from the (north) polar end 34 of the diametric magnet 20, through element 16, extension 30, metal plate 35, extension 32, to the (south) polar end 36 of the magnet 20.
- a door handle 24 covers the spindle 22 and is fixed in position with a pin 25.
- Tension spring 26 loops 28 around the door handle 24 connecting the ferromagnetic element 16 to the diametric magnet 20.
- the diametric magnet 20 is rotated and changes the direction of the magnetic fields 40 and 42 because this is the shortest path from one pole (north) 34 to the other pole (south) 36.
- Flat plate extensions 30 and 32 are therefore outside of the magnetic field and are no longer drawn to the metal plate 42.
- the spring 26 forces the round magnet 20 and handle 24 to return to their original position, again enabling the magnetization of the extensions 30, 32 when contacting the metal plate 42 of the door jamb 44.
- Figure 5 illustrates a lock 50 comprising a closure mechanism 10 according to this invention and also incorporating dead bolt 52 mechanism.
- the rotation of the diametric magnet 20 was illustrated in the above figures with the aid of a tension spring 26. However, other means may be used to rotate the magnet 20 and change the magnetic field in order to magnetize and demagnetize the flat plates 30, 32.
- the round diametric magnet 21 contains two arced (north) poles 62 and 64 and two opposite arced (south) poles 66 and 68 at 45° to each other.
- the mechanism contains four ferromagnetic elements 71, 72, 73 and 74 with the elements 71 and 72 having extensions 31 and 33, respectively. Elements 73 and 74 are not connected to elements 71 and 72 nor to elements 31 and 33.
- FIG.8 Another embodiment of the present invention is shown in Figs.8 and 9.
- the closure mechanism is utilized to close a window.
