Definitions
- connection ends are numerous and of different kinds, but we are interested here in the design of an end piece which is manipulated remotely by a tool located at the end of a pole and which requires only simple movements.
- the usual fittings do not have this ease of handling, which is detrimental when one has to deal with opening or closing the pipe connections leading to devices such as filters immersed in the bottom of a pool and susceptible to '' be irradiating: the fittings used until now oblige to use an overhead crane to raise the device and bring the fittings to the surface where they are handled, which imposes both embarrassments due to this tedious maneuver and risks contamination.
- the connector of the invention belongs to the
- the connector of the invention differs from the previous one in that it comprises a receiving cradle, for the female end piece and which is located under and in front of the male end piece, and also in that the means of rotation of the cams consist in heads located on the cam articulation axes, and that rotational stops exist between the female end piece and the male end piece.
- the connection is improved in three different aspects: the preliminary joining of the end pieces is facilitated by the cradle; the rotation of the cams can be accomplished by a simple rotational movement on heads which are easy to grasp and turn by a tool such as a conventional key welded to the end of a pole; and the stops limit the rotation of the bits one on the other when the tool weighs on the cams while performing its maneuver.
- gripping heads are integral with fork cheeks enclosing the cam levers: the rotation of the heads produces a rotation of the cheeks, then a rotation of the levers by a pushing of the branches of the fork.
- the pipes take various orientations depending on the positions of the materials to which they are attached, and that it is not possible to grasp them from a distance to turn them. It is then useful to adjust the position of the cradle to bring it back under the male connector.
- the cradle includes a hose clamp, which can be tightened on a sleeve interposed between the male fitting and the associated pipe; and if the socket includes a collar receiving area and nipples framing the receiving area, it is possible to loosen and tighten the collar, and the nipples prevent the collar from sliding along the socket. It is good that the collar includes a 'tightening head with identical section to the gripping heads, so that all the heads can be grasped and turned by the same tool.
- the connector is generally referenced by A.
- a male end piece is given the reference 1
- a female end piece is given the reference 2. They are located at the end of the respective pipes 3 and 4, but a socket 5 is placed between the male end piece 1 and its associated pipe 3.
- connection can be produced by engagement threaded ends 6 of the sleeve 5 in corresponding threads of the male end 1 and the associated pipe 3, and a smooth circular surface 7 extends between these threaded ends. It is limited by nipples 8 on both sides and the purpose of which will be explained later.
- the male end piece 1 comprises a groove 9, and the female end piece 2 comprises a pair of cams 10 which are articulated to it by pins 11 and are extended by levers 12; the cams 10 enter the female end piece 2 by crossing notches 13 operated through it (to a variable depth governed by the angle whose levers 12 are tilted). In an extreme position, the cams 10 also penetrate into the groove 9 when the male end piece 1 has been installed in the female connector 2 and help to block it.
- the axes 11 pass through bosses 15 of the female end piece 2 where they are retained, and extend outside, ending in a gripping head 16 which can take the appearance of a hexagonal screw head ending in a cone of 17.
- centering cheeks 18 extending parallel to lever 12 are integral "heads 17, and their end is provided with a pair of teeth 19 of a fork, between which the associated lever 12 is retained. a rotation of the heads 16 therefore requires a corresponding rotation of the cheeks 18, then of the levers 12 via the teeth 19, and finally of the cams 10.
- a connecting tongue 20 extends between the axes 11, under the gripping heads 16 and the cheeks 18, and again around them to finish in two curved ends 21.
- the mechanism includes another cradle 22 extending under the male end piece 1 and in front of it, and a clamping collar 23, arranged around the circular bearing 1, holds in place.
- the collar 23 is a continuous hoop provided with a thread 24 in which is engaged the rod of a clamping screw 25, the head 26 of which comprises a hexagonal base 27 as for the gripping heads 16 and one end rounded or conical 28. an arch 35 depending on the collar 23 retains a thinned portion of the clamping screw 25 and makes it captive.
- connection A is immersed a few meters deep in a swimming pool and is used to connect a filter 29 to other equipment.
- An operator grasps a tool 30 composed of a pole 31 at the end of which is welded a screw socket 32 in order to connect the end pieces 1 and 2 to each other.
- the operator then loosens the clamping screw 25 to disengage the collar 23 from the bearing 7, then he can turn the cradle 22 while resting on the screw clamping 25 to return it to its convenient useful position, under 1 ' ' male end piece 1; then the operator takes a pliers with long branches to grasp the female end piece 2, place it on the cradle 22 and push it around the male end piece 1 until it gets stuck against a seal 33. He then takes up the tool 30 again and places the sleeve 32 on the gripping heads 16 to tilt the cams 10 and bring them into the groove 9. The connection is then completed. The thrust that the tool 30 exerts on the heads 16 during this operation rotates the female end piece 2, but the ends of the axes 11 abut against the edges of the cradle 22 and therefore limit this movement. Disconnection is carried out with reverse operations.
