Description

MACHINE FOR AIRTIGHT SEALING A FILM OR THE LIKE ON FOOD CONTAINERS
The present invention relates to a machine for airtight shrink- wrapping of food containers particularly adapted to be used in retail shops for wrapping food in a quick and hygienic way. It is known that in the delicatessen counters of supermarkets or food shops there is a number of ready to use food sold as portions of different size according to the costumer's need.
Ready to use food is delivered to the consumer wrapped in airtight closed containers in order to warrant hygienic conditions on conveyance and to improve conservation.
According to the known art airtight closure of the container is obtained with special wrapping machines which are fixing to the container by heat sealing a film of thermoplastic material previously arranged at the opening of the container. The known wrapping machines generally comprise a frame provided with a shaft on which a reel of thermoplastic film and a pull out box are arranged. The box has an inner housing for the container to be wrapped, above which there is a heat sealing plate to which a cutting unit for the plastic film is associated, allowing the operator to lean the plate against the perimetral edges of the container.
In operation the user pulls out the box and after having placed the food in the container, puts said container in the corresponding housing. Then the operator stretches manually the film on the container opening and closes the box so as cut automatically the film and put the heat sealing plate in contact with the container.
When heat sealing is completed, the plate is automatically raised and the user pulls out the box to take the container.
A first drawback of the above mentioned wrapping machine consists in that film stretching has to be carried out manually with a consequent loss of time, particularly serious when there is a crowded condition at the counter.
Another drawback consists in that the counter operators are wearing for hygienic reasons gloves that do not allow an optimal grip of the film so as to cause loss of time and/or problems in stretching the film. Another wrapping machine solving the above mentioned problems is different from the preceding one because the heat sealing plate is manually actuated by the operator through a control lever and it is provided with film driving means cooperating with holding means adapted to hold said film near one of the sides of the container perimeter.
This allows to obtain the automatic film stretching on the container during the manual box closure so as to avoid the above mentioned manual stretching.
In operation when the user closes the box, the film is automatically stretched.
Then the user actuates manually the control lever so as to lower the plate and put it in contact with the container.
A signal light advices that heat sealing occurred allowing to raise the heated plate and take out the box and the sealed container.
A first drawback of said machine consists in that the operation of the plate obliges the operator to actions generally involving a loss of time and when there is crowding at the counter, confusion and mistakes may occur.
The present invention aims at overcoming said drawbacks. More particularly a first object of the invention is to provide a shrink wrapping machine for food containers considerably reducing the container wrapping time in comparison with the known machines.
Another object of the invention is to further automate the wrapping process by reducing the intervention actions of the operator in comparison with the known machines.
A last but not least object of the invention is to provide a fully automatic shrink wrapping machine so as to disengage the operator making him available for other tasks.
Said objects are attained by a machine for airtight shrink wrapping of food containers with thermoplastic films that according to the main claim comprises:
- a frame provided with upper support means defining a generally horizontal rotation axis for unwinding a film reel and at least a lower box that can be moved along a direction generally transversal to said rotation axis, provided with at least one housing for said container; - holding means adapted to hold said film near one of the sides of the container contour when closing said box;
- film driving means arranged between said reel and said box adapted to place said film at said holding means when said box is opened;
- heat sealing means for said film to said container arranged above said at least one housing; - at least one film cutting unit arranged downstream said reel; said machine being characterized by comprising means sensing the position of said box adapted to actuate through actuating means, said heat sealing means and said cutting unit when said box is substantially closed. According to a preferred embodiment the holding means comprise a plurality of magnetic elements fixed to a movable bar and cooperating with corresponding magnetic elements with opposite polarity arranged on the inner wall of the box to hold the end of the thermoplastic film so as to stretch the film when closing said box. Again according to a preferred embodiment the heat sealing means consist of a plate provided with sealing elements arranged near the container user and actuated by an electromagnet actuated by a limit switch sensing the box closure.
Advantageously the machine of the invention allows to tightly close the container in less time in comparison with the equivalent devices up to now used.
Still advantageously the machine of the invention allows the operator to carry out other tasks during the container closing process.
A last but not least advantage consists in that the machine of the invention allows to reduce the actions required for the operator to close the container so as to avoid unnecessary inattentions mainly when the counter is particularly crowded.
The above mentioned objects and advantages will be better understood by the following description of a preferred embodiment of the invention given as a non-limiting illustrative example with reference to the accompanying sheets of drawings in which:
- Fig. 1 is an isometric view of the machine of the invention;
- Fig. 2 is a sectional side view of the machine of Fig. 1 ;
- Figs. 3 and 4 show the machine of Fig. 1 in two different operation phases. The machine for airtight shrink wrapping of food containers C by thermoplastic films 9 is shown in Fig. 1 where it is generally indicated with reference numeral 1.
The machine comprises a frame 2 provided with upper support means 3 defining a generally horizontal rotation axis 4 for unwinding a reel 5 of the film 9 and a lower box 6 movable along a direction 6a generally transversal to the rotation axis 4.
The box 6 is provided with a housing 7 for the container C and as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 has holding means 8 holding the film 9 near the bottom side 10 of said box 6. More particularly the holding means 8 allow to stretch the film 9 on the container C when the movable box 6 is closed and comprise a first couple of magnetic elements 8a on the bottom side 10 cooperating with a second couple of magnetic elements 8c of opposite polarity fixed to a movable bar 8b. The movable bar 8b is facing the bottom side 10 and is free to move along the direction 6a to cooperate by contact with a mechanical limit switch 8d spacing it from the first couple of magnetic elements 8a when the box 6 is open, so as to define a groove 8e to allow the film 9 to be placed between them. Proper driving means 11 for the film 9 are arranged between the reel 5 and the box 6 to arrange the film 9 at the holding means 8 and more particularly inside the groove 8e when the box 6 is open.
Inside the machine there are heat sealing means 12 to seal the film 9 to the container C, arranged above the housing 7 and cooperating with a cutting unit 13 arranged downstream the reel 5 and adapted to sever the film 9 from the residual part of the reel 5. According to the invention the machine comprises sensor means 15 detecting the position of box 6 and adapted to actuate through actuating means 14 the heat sealing means 12 for the film 9 and the cutting unit 13 when the box 6 is fully closed. More particularly the sensor means 15 consist of a switch while the actuating means 14 consists of an electromagnet 14a fixed to the frame 2 and having the stem 14b operatively connected through leverage L to the heat sealing means 12.
According to an executive variation not shown in the drawings, the actuating means 14 consist of a pneumatic piston hydraulically connected to a pneumatic power unit.
As to the housing 7, it is defined by a plurality of walls 7a so arranged as to define a perimeter substantially corresponding with the outer contour of a cross section of container C. It is to be noted that the housing 7 may have different shapes so as to lodge containers C of different size and shape. As to the driving means 11 , they consist of a sliding surface 11 a for the film 9 having a stretch 11 b generally orthogonal to the plane defined by box 6.
Furthermore a couple of facing and spaced surfaces 11 c, 11d define a slit 11e for passage of the film 9. The heat sealing means 12 comprise a plurality of sealing heads 12a substantially defining the contour of the opening of container C, said heads being put into contact with film 9 when the heat sealing means 12 are lowered.
At rest the machine has the box 6 fully pulled out as shown in detail in Fig. 2, with the starting part 9a of film 9 arranged in groove 8e defined by the open holding means 8 and the heat sealing means 12 raised.
In operation the user puts the container C in housing 7 of box 6, ready to be closed and then closes manually the box pushing it inside the machine 1 as shown in Fig. 3.
At this stage the holding means 8 that were initially open, are closed by absence of the action exerted by the mechanical limit switch 8d holding the film
9 between the couples of magnets 8a, 8c so as to draw the film on the container C.
When the box 6 reaches the end closure position as shown in Fig. 4, switch 15 is closed and actuates electromagnet 14a lowering the heat sealing means 12 and the film cutting unit 13.
A control unit not shown in the drawings holds the heat sealing means operative for the time required to heat seal the film 9.
When the operation is completed, the user pulls out the box 6 and takes the sealed container C from the housing 7 to deliver it to the costumer. According to a constructional variation not shown in the drawings, the machine comprises second actuating means to be operated for instance through a switch, closing automatically the box so as to start the closing process of the container.
At this point the machine 1 is ready to wrap another container. From the foregoing it is to be understood that the machine of the invention attains all the intended objects.
The described invention may provide for constructional variations for instance as to the shape of the box, the holding means, the heat sealing means or the actuating means. Every variation not shown and possibly not mentioned should be considered as covered by the present invention when falling in the scope of the appended claims.
