The present invention relates to an electronic wristwatch comprising a flexible bracelet having a molded elastomer body, an electronic clock movement comprising components mounted on a flexible film with printed circuits, said components and the flexible film being incorporated in the body of the bracelet by overmolding of the elastomer of said body, a display unit controlled by the watch movement, and a source of electrical power connected to the watch movement. The invention also relates to a method of manufacturing such a wristwatch.
In French patent application No. 2,595,480, a wristwatch of this kind is provided, comprising a liquid crystal display unit or the like, controlled by an electronic circuit powered by a battery or another power source. electric. The components of the electronic circuit and the display unit itself are incorporated into the bracelet, which is made of flexible plastic material or the like by overmolding on these elements in the form of a flat strip of small thickness, the screen display being located in the middle part of this bracelet. The battery housing is provided in a thicker part located at one end of the bracelet, which can carry a closure element thereof. Near the display screen, several sensitive control keys are provided which are integrated inside the bracelet, but the upper face of which is flush with the corresponding face of the latter. The display screen being integrated into the bracelet due to the overmolding of the latter, the upper face of the screen must be flush with the upper face of the bracelet so that the indications displayed are visible, unless the bracelet is molded in a transparent plastic material for reading the display. With such a structure, it can be understood that the plastic material used for overmolding must be relatively soft so that the bracelet is flexible enough. As a result, the components coated in this material are poorly protected against external pressures and risk being quickly damaged when the watch is worn on the wrist. This may explain the fact that this kind of watch has not met with commercial success so far.
In British patent application No. 1,574,730, a wristwatch is described, the case and the strap of which are formed from a single molded piece, for example made of polypropylene, this strap being connected to the case by thinned parts which form flexible hinges. The bracelet has housings fitted with control keys which are electrically connected to the modules electronics mounted in the housing by a printed circuit film, which is embedded in the plastic. The manufacture of such a watch is relatively complex because it requires the mounting of multiple elements in the case and the housings provided in the bracelet. The present invention aims to create a wristwatch in which most or all of the electronic components are embedded in a flexible bracelet, but are nevertheless protected from damage which may be caused by external influences during normal use of the watch. . In addition, this watch should be able to be produced at a very low cost. To this end, the invention relates to an electronic wristwatch of the kind indicated in the preamble, characterized in that it comprises a plurality of external elements mounted on the body of the bracelet and flexibly connected to each other by the bracelet , at least some of these external elements being housings arranged so as to cover and protect components of the watch movement and the display unit.
Thus, the delicate elements of the watch, namely the components of the watch movement and the display unit, are mounted economically in or on the bracelet and are protected by sufficiently rigid cases, which can be extremely simple. and inexpensive while having an attractive exterior appearance. The wristwatch can be completed by other external elements, for example decorative elements having an appearance similar to that of the cases and distributed along the body of the bracelet.
The invention further provides an advantageous method of manufacturing such a wristwatch, comprising the following steps: the components of the timepiece movement are mounted on the flexible film with printed circuits, which comprises electrical connection means for the connect to the display unit and the power source; then the bracelet body is produced by overmolding on the flexible film and on said components, with the exception of the connection means; then the display unit and the power source are connected to said connection means and the external elements are fixed to the body of the bracelet.
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description of a preferred embodiment, presented by way of nonlimiting example with reference to the appended drawings, in which:
- la figure 1 est une vue partielle en perspective d'une montre-bracelet selon l'invention,FIG. 1 is a partial perspective view of a wristwatch according to the invention,
These external elements are distributed along the flexible bracelet 1 which connects to each other and which has at its ends conventional closing means not shown, for example a buckle with a pin or a folding clasp The external elements 2 to 5 are preferably all the same size and can be shaped to give the wristwatch the appearance of a link bracelet or another fancy aspect In this example, unlike a classic wristwatch, we do not notice the presence of a case containing the entire watch movement display, but only a glass 6 arranged on the upper face of the housing 3 to allow a reading of a display unit contained in this housing The internal structure of the wristwatch appears in FIGS. 2 and 3 The body of the bracelet 1 is formed by a molded strip of electrically insulating thermoplastic material such as an elastomer and contains a flexible film 10 with printed circuits which, in the present example, is extends in the area covered by the three cases 2, 3 and 4, in particular for electrically connecting the elements of the watch which are covered by these cases On this film 10 are mounted most and preferably all of the components of the movement of horology, of which we see for example a quartz resonator 1 1 and an integrated circuit 12 in FIG. 2, in the zone covered by the housing 4 It will be noted that in this zone the upper part of the elastomer, indicated by the reference 13 in Figure 3, has been deleted in Figure 2 so as to show the components 1 1 and 12, but in reality they are coated in the elastomer
Dans la zone couverte par le boîtier 2, une cavité 14 est ménagée dans la partie supérieure du bracelet en élastomère pour recevoir la partie inférieure d'une pile électrique 15 servant de source d'alimentation électrique de la montre Le film flexible 10 a circuits imprimés comporte dans cette zone deux lamelles de contact 16 et 17 qui émergent dans la cavité 14 pour s'appliquer contre les pôles correspondants de la pile 15 et relier celle-ci aux circuits imprimesIn the area covered by the housing 2, a cavity 14 is formed in the upper part of the elastomer strap to receive the lower part of an electric battery 15 serving as a source of power for the watch. The flexible film 10 has printed circuits. comprises in this zone two contact strips 16 and 17 which emerge in the cavity 14 to be applied against the corresponding poles of the battery 15 and connect the latter to the printed circuits
In the area covered by the housing 3, the flexible film 10 comprises a connection tab 18 provided with conductive tracks 19 for connecting the printed circuits to a display unit 20, preferably constituted by a liquid crystal display cell L unit 20 not being incorporated into the elastomer body of bracelet 1, the connection tab 18 emerges from the elastomer and it is preferably folded back to be fixed to the edge of the unit 20 carrying the cell control contacts, for example by means of an anisotropic adhesive. In the example shown, the tongue 18 extends laterally from the flexible film 10, but one could also provide that it extends longitudinally. While the housings 2 and 4 are completely closed above and on the sides, the central housing 3 has an upper opening 22 in which the glass 6 is mounted using a seal 23. Furthermore, the housing 3 or one of the two other boxes 2 and 4 is equipped with a push button 24 making it possible to control various functions of the watch, in particular the time setting, via the tracks 19 of the tongue 18.
The cases 2, 3 and 4 are open downwards and shaped so as to overlap the body of the bracelet 1, against which they are pressed in a sealed manner thanks to the fact that the compressible nature of the elastomer allows it to play the role of '' a seal. To locally increase this compressibility, the body of the bracelet has a surface bead 26 on its upper face and its lateral faces, facing the surfaces of the casings 2 to 4 pressing against the bracelet. Each of the cases 2 to 4 is fixed to the bracelet 1 using a respective bottom plate 27 provided with holes through which pass screws 28 passing through holes 30 of the bracelet and engaging in the side walls of the case . This allows the body of the bracelet 1 to be clamped between the plate and the case to guarantee watertightness.
The decorative elements 5 overlap the body of the bracelet 1 like the cases 2 to 4 and are also fixed by tightening thereon using a respective bottom plate 29. As there is no concern for sealing in this case, the fixing of the plate 29 to the decorative element 5 does not need to be made by screws and can also be carried out, for example, by gluing or clipping. It could also be provided that the decorative elements have an annular shape and are threaded onto the body of bracelet 1.
The boxes 2 to 4 and the decorative elements 5 can be made of any rigid or semi-rigid material, for example in the form of molded or injected plastic parts, in the case of an inexpensive watch. They can have a rectangular or other shape, depending on the desired aesthetic effects, and identical or different sizes. It should be noted that the invention makes it possible to group under the casings 2 to 4 all the delicate components of the watch and thus protect them against shocks, pressures or any external influence liable to damage them. The flexible film 10 is not entirely protected by the cases, but its coating with the elastomeric material of the bracelet 1 offers it protection sufficient between the housings. It will also be noted that the box 2 containing the battery 15 can be removed easily to allow the battery to be replaced.
With the structure described above, the wristwatch can be produced by an inexpensive process. Preferably, the flexible film 10 with integrated circuits is obtained by cutting a strip comprising a large number of these circuits. The components of the timepiece movement are mounted on the film, either before or after cutting the band. Next, the elastomer body of the bracelet 1 is overmolded on the film 10 fitted with the electrical components, protecting the connection tab 18 and the contact strips 16 and 17 so that they emerge from the elastomer body. If necessary, overmolding can be carried out in several stages, in particular to facilitate the positioning of the flexible film in the mold and / or the incorporation of reinforcing elements such as threads or a textile ribbon forming a core of the bracelet. The molded body may include protruding elements for holding the display unit and the battery, for example by clipping. The display unit 20 can be connected to the tongue 18, either before overmolding or after. Then, it suffices to place the battery 15 in the cavity 14 and to mount the cases 2 to 4 and the decorative elements 5 on the bracelet, and also to assemble the clasp of the bracelet if necessary. It is understood that this method of production makes it possible to produce the wristwatch in an automated manner as much as possible and at a very low cost.
In the context of the present invention, the construction described above can be the subject of multiple variants. The display unit can be of any type, in particular of the analog type with stepping motor. The battery serving as a source of electrical energy can be replaced by any other suitable supply system, for example with solar cells or a microgenerator driven by the movements of the wearer of the watch. The cases protecting the components of the watch movement, the display and the battery may be more or less numerous. In particular, it is possible to provide several displays distributed in several cases, if the watch includes various additional functions. One can also provide several control buttons, and these can be arranged either on the cases, or in the body of the bracelet itself, for example by being embedded in the elastomer. Of course, the decorative elements 5 are not essential in the context of the invention.
