Definitions

  • This invention relates to a method of improving the shear strength of a bolted joint.
  • the invention resides in a method of fastening two members, each member including a substantially planar fastening portion, the method including:- forming a boss in each planar fastening portion; forming an aperture in the crown of each boss; abutting the two members front to rear such that the bosses closely nest one within the other; fastening the two members by fastening means through the apertures.
  • the invention resides in a method of increasing the shear strength of a bolted joint, the method including:- forming a boss on a first planar member; forming a complementary recess in a second planar member; abutting the first and second planar members such that the boss is closely received in the recess, and such that the first and second planar members are restrained against relative planar movement by said close reception; and bolting the first and second members together via apertures provided in the first and second members.
  • the invention resides in a joint including:- a first planar member including a boss; a second planar member in abutting relationship with the first member and including a complementary recess for closely receiving the boss such that the first and second 2planar members are restrained against relative planar movement by said close reception; and a bolt passing through the first and second members for bolting the members together.
  • FIGS 1 A & 1 B are rear and front perspective views of a first member in the form of an apex plate
  • FIGS 2A to 2D are frontal elevation views of the first member bolted to a pair of second members in the form of the top chords of a truss;
  • FIG3 is a schematic sectional view through the apex plate and top chords.
  • FIG 1 there are shown front and rear perspective views of an apex plate 10.
  • Apex plate 10 has a vertically extending pressed region 12 for receiving the king pin of a truss as shown in figure 2.
  • Apex plate 10 also includes a pair of pressed bosses 14, each of which is circular in shape. Each boss 14 also includes an aperture 16 punched from a location central of its crown.
  • the top chords 18 of the truss include a planar web portion 20 which includes a complementary pressed boss having an aperture centrally punched therefrom.
  • the tapered walls of the bossed region facilitates location of one member relative to the other during assembly.
  • one boss Once assembled with the bolt extending through the aligned apertures and holding the two members in abutting relationship, one boss is closely nested within the reverse side of the other boss and this arrangement locates the members against relative planar movement, and furthermore has the benefit of increasing the shear strength of the bolted joint.
  • the circular nature of the pressed bosses allows relative rotation of the two members as shown in figure 2 to accommodate trusses of different pitch.
  • the two members are bolted at a single position rather than at multiple positions as was the practice in the prior art. In the prior art, shear strength requirements dictated the need for multiple bolts, which limited the flexibility of the joint.
  • the invention Whilst the invention has been illustrated with reference to the bolting together of an apex plate and the top chord of a truss, the invention is equally applicable to other members such as the bolting of the top chord and bottom chord at the eave line. In the prior art, the top and bottom chords were bolted together at multiple locations via an eave plate. In contrast, the present invention allows direct connection via a single bolt.
