  • masticating guns range in length from 225 mm to 475 mm and include a shaft having a circular flange at one end which can be moved forward axially by trigger operation of a drive mechanism located on the gun.
  • the cartridges for the 225 mm guns are usually made of plastic (although a pressed steel is sometimes used) while the industrial size (475 mm) guns are generally made of steel.
  • the drive shaft of the gun is driven forward against the rear flange of the cartridge utilising a ratchet mechanism.
  • the mastic is usually quite viscous and so the pressure within the cartridge builds up as the flange moves forward until mastic is expelled via the aperture.
  • a problem with these masticating guns is that they rely on an excess of pressure being applied to the content of the cartridge in order to issue mastic . Whilst typically no additional pressure is applied to the piston of the cartridge once a driving forward action of the drive shaft has been completed, the excess pressure already built up within the cartridge results very often in excess content being issued through the aperture, until the pressure in the cartridge is released.
  • a piston for a cartridge of the type having the piston provided at a proximal end and an aperture at a distal end that opens into an interior of the cartridge holding fluid contents, the aperture releasing the fluid contents under pressure applied at the piston, the piston comprising: - a decompressing means arranged, when pressure is not applied to the piston in use, to release fluid pressure in the cartridge to inhibit at least a portion of the fluid contents from being released through the aperture.
  • the decompressing means comprises a biasing means disposed between a) a first piston member in contact with the shaft and with the contents of the cartridge and b) a second piston member that is in contact with the contents of the cartridge so that after a masticating operation, the biasing means can move the first piston member with respect to the second piston member so as to release the fluid pressure.
  • the decompressing means comprises a resilient membrane member formed as part of the piston and in contact with the fluid contents, wherein the membrane member is arranged, in use, in a manner such that a portion of the membrane member is pushed out of a quiescent position and toward the distal end of the cartridge under pressure applied to the piston, and to return to the quiescent position when no pressure is applied to the piston so as to release the fluid pressure.
  • a cartridge of the type having a moveable piston provided at a proximal end and an aperture at a distal end that opens into an interior of the cartridge holding fluid contents, the aperture releasing the fluid contents under pressure applied at the piston
  • the cartridge comprising: a first threaded portion; engaging means for facilitating locking of the piston against movement along a central axis of the cartridge if desired; the first threaded portion being arranged to cooperate, in use, with a second threaded portion on a gun in which the cartridge is inserted to move the cartridge relative to the piston whilst the piston is locked so as to effect that a volume of the interior of the cartridge is increased, thereby releasing the fluid pressure.
  • the engaging means comprises a first locking member for, in use, engaging a corresponding second locking member provided on a shaft of a masticating gun for effecting locking of the piston by way of having the shaft being locked in against movement towards the distal end of the cartridge .
  • a masticating gun comprising: - a moveable shaft arranged, in use, to be locked against movement towards a discharging end of the gun if desired; a threaded portion for, in use, effecting movement of a cartridge body of a cartridge which is inserted into the gun relative to a piston of the cartridge; and
  • a masticating gun comprising: - a moveable shaft, the shaft comprising a flange structure at one end thereof disposed, in use, to push a piston of a cartridge for discharging a fluid from the cartridge; and wherein the flange structure comprises a decompressing means arranged, when no pressure is applied to the shaft, to release fluid pressure in the cartridge to inhibit at least a portion of the fluid contents from being discharged.
  • the decompressing means comprises:
  • a piston member arranged, in use, to extend through an opening in the piston to be in fluid communication with an internal volume of the cartridge
  • biasing means disposed, in use, to be in contact with the piston and arranged to move the piston member with respect to the piston when no pressure is applied to the shaft so as to release the fluid pressure.

  • the second piston member 64 has an aperture extending therethrough, so as to receive the piston extension 62a of first member 58.
  • a spring 66 that is disposed between an abutting surface 68 of the first piston member 58 and an abutting surface 70 of the second piston member 64.
  • the shaft flange 28 has a flat face that contactably engages the first piston 58.
  • the second piston 64 tends to remain in fixed coaxial relationship with the piston extension 62a until the mastic operation is completed and the force of the expanding spring 66 at the abutting surface 68 moves the first piston member 58 in a direction towards the proximal end 16 of the cartridge 12.
  • the piston extension 62a then moves and creates a region of space within the tube (as can be seen in figure la) so as to create more volume within cartridge 12 and thereby decrease the pressure built up inside the cartridge 12.
  • the piston extension may comprise an end portion 150 which is dimensioned to be slightly larger than the opening in a second piston portion 152 to prevent a first piston portion 154 from being disengaged from the second piston portion 152 under the bias-action of a spring 156.
  • the first piston portion 154 comprises an internal thread 158 to engage, in use, a threaded end portion 160 a shaft 162 of a masticating gun (not shown) .
  • the decompressing means incorporates both the locking system and the spring of the first embodiment. This further assists in decompressing the contents of the cartridge.
  • the two prong member may not be in fact a two prong member but any sort of member which can lock and engage with a mating cartridge ( ie . a three prong member or a thread mechanism as shown in Figure lb) .
  • the spring does not have to be a spring 66 but may in fact be any sort of biasing means which when released from the force applied by shaft 22, will move the first piston member 5 in a direction towards the proximal end 16.
  • the decompressing means comprises a first threaded portion 100 on a cartridge 102 ( Figure 3) .
  • the threaded portion 100 is intended to cooperate, in use, with an internal thread 104 at a discharge end 106 of a masticating gun 108, as shown in Figure 8.
  • the shaft 110 of the gun 108 is connected to a piston 112 of the cartridge 102 ( Figure 3) by a thread mechanism. If it is intended to stop the discharge of fluid, the cartridge is rotated in a manner such that the threaded portion 100 ( Figure 3) engages with the internal thread 104 of the gun 108 ( Figure 4) , thereby moving the body 114 of the cartridge 102 towards the discharge end 106 of the gun 108.
  • a piston structure 170 comprises an annular piston member 172, and a circular membrane member 174.
  • the circular membrane member 174 is fabricated in a manner such that in a quiescent position 174a it provides an increased internal volume 176 of the volume when compared with the situation where membrane 174 is in an activated state 174b.
  • a shaft flange 178 of a shaft 180 of a masticating gun engages with the membrane 174 and pushes the same from the quiescent position 174a to the activated position 174b.
  • the flange 178 is of a convex shape to increase the variation in the internal volume 176 that may be achieved. It will be appreciated, however, that volume variations can also be achieved through differently shaped flanges, and as such the flange could e.g. simply be a flat flange.
  • a piston structure 190 comprises an annular piston portion 192, and a circular central piston portion 194.
  • the central piston portion 194 is configured in a way such that it closely fits within the annular piston portion 192, being kept in place through friction between the sidewalls 196 of the annular piston portion 192 and the sidewalls 198 of the central piston portion 194.
  • the central piston portion 194 further comprises a female engagement port 200. Through interaction with a corresponding male connector, the central piston portion 194 can thus be pulled out of the annular piston portion 192 as indicated by arrow 202.
  • the piston structure 190 further comprises a temporary seal 204 which is made from suitable material to be readily piercable through insertion of a flange described below.
  • a flange structure 206 comprises a male locking key 208 configured for cooperation with the female engagement portion 200 of the piston structure 190 (compare Figure 6).
  • the flange 206 further comprises a spring 210 which is secured at one end to a base member 212 of the flange structure 206.
  • the flange 206 is formed on a shaft 214 of a masticating gun (not shown) embodying the present invention.

Abstract

La présente invention concerne un piston (58) conçu pour une cartouche (12) du type où le piston (58) est placé dans une extrémité proximale (16) et une ouverture dans une extrémité distale qui s'ouvre dans la cartouche (12) renfermant les contenus fluides sous pression appliqués dans le piston (58), ce piston comprenant: un dispositif de décompression (56) disposé, lorsque la pression n'est pas appliquée sur le piston (58) au cours de l'utilisation, de manière à relâcher la pression des fluides dans la cartouche (12) et d'empêcher ainsi au moins une partie des contenus fluidiques de sortir par l'ouverture.
