  • Appliances of this type have hitherto been of a generally U-shape form in plan, comprising a U-shape platform or bite stop, with flanges extending along the inner and outer edges of this platform and projecting both upwardly and downwardly from it.
  • the appliance therefore has U-shaped channels either side of the bite stop, to receive the opposed sets of teeth of the upper and lower jaws: these two channels are generally aligned with each other, such that, in use, the lower jaw is displaced forwardly from its normal position.
  • US patent No. 5,462,066 discloses such an appliance, which is made of a plastics material which may be heated to a temperature higher than body temperature, then inserted into the mouth and deformed to conform to the contours of the subject's teeth and gums.

  • each vent extends from approximately the mid-line of the respective central incisor to approximately the mid-line of the respective first pre- molar . It will be appreciated that the vent passages allow significant air flow and so enable the user to breathe through the mouth, where this is desired. Nevertheless, I find that the appliance still reduces the occurrence of snoring because of its action in displacing the lower jaw slightly forwardly from its normal position.

  • each of the outer flanges is arranged to overlap the gums, beyond the gingival line, by a substantially uniform amount, preferably by about 2mm.
  • each flange is of a depth in the range of 10 to 15mm relative to the corresponding surface of the platform.

  • the appliance comprises a platform or bite stop 10 which is generally U-shaped in plan view: flanges 12,14 extend along the U-shaped outer edge of the bite stop 10 and project upwardly and downwardly, respectively, whilst flanges 16,18 extend along the U-shaped inner edge of the bite stop 10 and also project upwardly and downwardly, respectively.
  • the appliance is thus formed with upper and lower U-shaped channels, to receive the sets of teeth of the upper and lower jaws of the user: when worn, the appliance acts to displace the lower jaw forwardly from its normal position, by approximately V ⁇ th inch.
  • the bite stop 10 increases progressively in depth, from the molar region to the incisors
  • the bite stop is suited to the diverging planes on which the upper and lower sets of teeth lie when the jaws are slightly open.
  • the buccal flanges 12,14 are of generally uniform depth relative to the bite stop 10, this depth being generally in the range of 10 to 15mm. In this way, the flanges 12,14 overlap the gingival line by a uniform amount, typically 2mm, to ensure a comfortably fit.
  • vents 20,22 are formed through the bite stop 10, either side of the centre front.
  • each vent extends from approximately the mid- line of the respective central incisor, around to approximately the mid-line of the first pre-molar.
  • the vents 20,22 allow substantial air flow through them and so allow the user to breathe through the mouth when this is desired.
  • the lower, outer flange 14 is formed at the front, centre region (lower labial flange) with a curved recess 24, to accommodate the user's lower labial frenum, which has a relatively high attachment in some individuals .
  • the appliance is formed of a thermoplastics material which may be heated to a temperature above body temperature, preferably by immersing in hot water: the appliance can then be inserted into the mouth of the intended user, who then bites firmly and presses the inner flanges against the teeth and gums, using the tongue, and also presses the outer flanges against the teeth and gums, to mould the appliance to the contours of the user's mouth.
  • the appliance can be gripped by a pair of tongs, the opposed jaws of which are engaged into the respective vents 20,22 to facilitate handling of the appliance without interfering with the manner in which it fits into the user's jaws.

Abstract

L'invention concerne un appareil oral permettant de réduire les ronflements et comportant une plate-forme généralement en forme de U (10) constituée de rebords (par exemple, 12, 16) s'étendant le long des ses bords intérieur et extérieur et faisant saillie à partir d'un des deux côtés de la plate-forme, définissant ainsi des canalisations supérieure et inférieure en forme de U destinées à recevoir les dents des mâchoires supérieure et inférieure. Par ailleurs, la plate-forme (10) est pourvue d'au moins un passage de ventilation (20, 22).
