Definitions
- the present invention relates to scissors and in particular relates to the improvements to scissors for the purpose of improving the safety of scissors.
- scissors are a relatively common utensil which are used in the home, school and elsewhere they can present a significant hazard particularly with children.
- One of the principal dangers of scissors relates to the ends of the blades which are often formed to be pointed and which present a significant danger to children particularly if they are used inappropriately which is often the case.
- the sharp ends of the blades can present a significant danger to the person in their path.
- the invention resides in an improvement to scissors which comprises a guard adapted to be mounted to the handle of one blade of a pair of scissors and having an edge adapted to be co-extensive with the one blade but located to the opposite side of the blade from the cutting edge of the one blade, the guard further comprising a wall extending from said edge to define a recess extending from the edge, said recess being adapted to accommodate the other blade of the pair scissors throughout the full range of movement of said other blade, said edge being substantially parallel to the cutting edge and extending for, at most, the length of the cutting edge.
- the outer radial perimeter for the recess is defined by a flange extending from the one wall whereby the outer end of the other blade is caused to pass closely adjacent to the flange.
- the recess is further defined by a second wall parallel to the first wall wherein said flange extends between the first and second wall.
- the outer end of the edge is formed to be divergent from the cutting edge. According to one particular embodiment the outer end is arcuately divergent from the cutting edge.
- the guard is adapted to be removably mounted to the scissors.
- the guard is adapted to be fixedly mounted to the scissors.
- the guard provides the handle for the one blade.
- the guard provides the handle for the one blade and is formed of two parts where one part provides one wall and the flange and the other part provides the second wall, wherein said parts are interconnected to provide said recess and to be supported from the one blade.
- the guard is formed of a third part which provides the handle and which is engaged with the two parts.
- the outer end of the one blade is enlarged.
- the enlarged outer end of the one blade comprises a lobe-like configuration.
- the outer end of the one blade is divergent from the edge of the guard.
- the outer end is arcuately divergent.
- the divergence of the outer end commences at or adjacent the outer end of the recess.
- the other blade is shorter than the one blade.
- the invention resides in a pair scissors having guard of the form as described above mounted with one handle.
- the hinge of the scissors is provided with a stop means adapted to limit the degree of opening and closure of the blades.
- Figure 1 is a schematic isometric view of a pair of scissors having a guard according to the first embodiment
- Figure 2 is a side elevation of a pair of scissors according to the first embodiment
- Figure 3 comprises six sectional views of the scissors of Figure 2 along lines AA, BB, CC, DD, EE and FF;
- Figure 4 is a side elevation of a pair of scissors according to the second embodiment.
- Figure 5 is a side elevation of a pair of scissors according to the third embodiment with the blades in the closed position
- Figure 6 is a side elevation of a pair of scissors according to the third embodiment with the blades in the open position.
- Figure 7 is an isometric view of the hinge a pair of scissors according to the third embodiment with the blades in the closed position;
- Figure 8 is an isometric view of the hinge a pair of scissors according to the third embodiment with the blades in the open position;
- Figure 9 is a side elevation of a pair of scissors according to the fourth embodiment with the blades in the closed position
- Figure 10 is a side elevation of a pair scissors according to the fourth embodiment with the blades in the open position.
- Figure 11 is an exploded view of a pair of scissors according to the fourth embodiment.
- the first embodiment comprises a pair of scissors having the first blade 11 and a first handle 12 associated with the first blade which is incorporated as an integral portion of a guard 13, while the other blade 14 of the scissors is associated with a second handle 15.
- the guard of the first embodiment is substantially transparent.
- the guard 13 extends from the first handle 12 to be substantially co-extensive with the first blade 11 and has a first edge 16 which is located to the opposite side of the first blade from the cutting edge 17 of the first blade 11.
- the guard is provided with a second edge 18 in opposed relation to the first edge 16 and located adjacent to the outer side of the other blade 14.
- the first edge 16 and the second edge 18 are each associated with a wall which are parallel to each other and define between themselves a recess A which accommodates the other blade 14 in its normal range of movement.
- the outer perimeter of the walls are interconnected by a flange 19 which serves to close the recess at the outer end of the guard.
- the first and second edges 16 and 18 are parallel to the cutting edge 17 but are spaced therefrom a sufficient distance to accommodate the materials with which the scissors are expected to be used.
- the outer ends of the first and second edges are formed to be arcuately divergent form the cutting edge 17.
- the one blade 11 has a length which is greater than the length of the recess and the length of the other blade 14 while the outer end 20 of the one blade 11 is formed to have an enlarged lobe-like configuration.
- the other blade 14 is fully accommodated within the recess A throughout its range of movement and only passes from the recess as its cutting edge approaches the cutting edge 17 of the one blade 11.
- the first and second edges 18 and 16 are spaced from the cutting edge a distance sufficient to enable the usual cutting action of the scissors with the materials with which the scissors are normally expected to be used (ie. paper, cardboard and fabric) this will not permit the entry of any item between the blades which is inappropriate, such as fingers, pencils, tongues and the like.
- the formation of the outer end of the edges 16 and 18 of the guard such that they are arcuately divergent from the cutting edge 17 serves to facilitate the entry of paper, fabric, cardboard and the like into the space between the cutting edge 17 of the one blade and the edges 16 and 18 of the guard.
- the divergence terminates at a position at or outward of the outer end of the other blade 14 as that outer end approaches the one blade 11 this also serves to prevent the engagement of any inappropriate item between the blades of the scissors.
- the lobe-like formation provided on the outer end of the one blade 11 further serves to overcome the hazard presented by the pointed ends which are usually present on a pair of scissors and which can present a significant danger when the scissors are used inappropriately.
- the first embodiment as shown at Figures 1 , 2 and 3 comprises one in which the guard 13 is engaged with an extension of the one blade 11 to provide a handle 12 for the one blade.
- the second embodiment as shown at Figure 4 comprises a guard 13 which is essentially of the same form as that of the first embodiment with the exception that it is formed as a separate component from the scissors and is mounted to the handle 12 of the one blade 11 of the scissors.
- the third embodiment as shown at Figures 5, 6 7 and 8 is of a similar form to that of the first embodiment.
- the essential difference in the case of the third embodiment relates to the presence of a stop means other than the guard 13 and the first and second handles 12 and 15 which will limit the movement of the blades beyond the closed and opened position as established by the stop means.
- the stop means of the third embodiment is provided adjacent the pivotal interconnection 20 of the blades 11 and 14 and comprises an arcuate rebate 21 formed in other blade 14 and a lug 22 formed on the one blade 11 which is positioned to be able to move arcuately over the rebate 21 with relative movement of the blades.
- the ends of the rebate 21 define the extent of the movement of the lug 22 with respect to the rebate 21 and as a result the extent of movement of the one blade 11 relative to the other blade 14.
- the ends of the rebate 21 are positioned such that on the blades 11 and 14 being opened the lug 22 will engage with one end 23 of the rebate 21 before the other blade engages with the guard 13. The resultant effect of such is that no undue forces will be induced upon the guard when the scissors are fully opened and that any reasonable but undue forces that may be applied between the blades to cause them to open beyond the maximum open position will not be destructive to the guard.
- ends of the rebate 21 are positioned such that on the blades 11 and 14 being closed the lug 22 will engage with the other end 24 of the rebate 21 before the handles 12 and 15 engage with each other.
- the resultant effect of such is that on the blades being closed they cannot be moved further to cause the handles to engage and this serves to reduce the likelihood of the hand of the user being pinched by the handles.
- the fourth embodiment as shown at Figures 9, 10 and 11 is of a general similar form to the first embodiment and differs essentially in relation to the construction of the scissors.
- the guard 13 which incorporates the first handle 12, is formed of three components.
- the first component 13a incorporates the handle 12 and is adapted to receive and support the first blade 11.
- the first component 13a provides the surface 24 which is intended to lie within the recess A and which serves to provide a limit to the movement of the other blade 14 as it moves away from the first blade 11.
- the recess A of the guard 13 is defined by a pair cheek components 13b and 13c which are intended to be fixed together to define the recess A whereby the outer edges 19a and 19b of each cheek element 13b and 13c combine to define the flange 19 which serves to close the recess A.
- Each of the cheek elements 13b and 13c are formed with an aperture 29 which is intended to align with the pivot access of the scissor and to receive the pivot pin 30.
- each of the cheek elements 13b is formed with an inner portion which is intended to engage opposite faces of the first component 13a and to be to be fixed thereto.
- the central portion of each opposed face of the first component 13a provides a space which can accommodate suitable decorative material, trade mark or advertising material.
- the top edge of the guard 13 can be used as a ruler.
- the enlargement 20 which is provided at the outer end of the one blade 11 is defined by a pair button elements 20a and 20b whereby one element 20b is provided with a peg 27 on one face and the opposed face of the other button 20a is provided with a recess while the outer end of the one blade 11 is provided with an aperture 26.
- the buttons 20a and 20b are interengaged by engagement of the peg 27 through the aperture 26 in the one blade 11 and into the recess 28 of the other button 20a. This engagement serves to positively and firmly retain the enlargement in position on the end of the one blade.
- the guard is formed as a separate item and is adapted such that it may be utilised with a substantially conventional pair of scissors such that it can be removably mounted to one handle of a pair of scissors to accommodate the blade of the other handle of the pair scissors in a similar manner to that described in relation to the second embodiment.
