IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED POCKET AND DRAW KNIVES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,289, dated February 29, 1876; application filed February 12, 1876.

Be it known that I, JOHN W. PEIRCE, of New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and in the State of Massachusetts, have invented cer; -tain new. and useful Improvements in Oombined Clasp-Knife and Draw-Knife; and do hereby declare that the following is'a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tool shut together for carriage in the pocket. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same arranged foruse as a draw-knife, and Fig. 3 is alike view of said tool arranged for use as an ordinary knife.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

The design of my invention is to arrange within a small compass, and in a 'convenient form, a tool which may be used for a draw- -knife, and for all purposes required-of an or- .are pivoted one or more blades, B, that-are capable of being closed, as shown inFig. 1,or.

, of being partly or entirely opened, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, an'din either position are locked in place by means of a back-spring, all inthe usual manner. Upon the outer end of one of the blades B is formed. a ring, 0, within which is an opening, 0, of sufficient size to admit the finger of a man.

The tool is now complete, and is capable of use as an ordinary clasp-knife, in which event the blade isopened to the position shown by Fig. 3; or it may be used for a draw-knife by turning said blade to the position shown by Fig. 2, in which latter event the handle is grasped by one hand'of the user, and one of the fingers of his opposite hand is inserted Within the ring, when it will be found that in most cases said tool will answer every purpose for which draw-knife is intended. Although the ring 0 is, preferably, employed, any other construction of the end of the blade B which will enable said end to be grasped by the hand will serve the same purpose.
