Abstract
A pair of scissors has a blade 19 movable about a pivot 17 within a protective casing 13 which is carried by the part 11 provided with the other blade 10, the protective casing 13 having a bottom edge 14 spaced from the other blade 10 to define a slot 16 for receiving the material to be cut, the casing 13 preventing the blade 19 from being poked into an eye and preventing a child's finger from being placed between the blades 10, 19. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Scissors
This invention relates to scissors and particularly, but not exclusively, to scissors used by children.
Scissors can be dangerous when used by children. It is very easy for a child when cutting material, such as paper, to accidently cut a finger. Also when the blades are open, it is quite easy for a child to accidently poke a blade into his or her eye or an eye of another child or person with consequential damage being caused to the eye.
According to the present invention there is provided a pair of scissors in which one blade is movable about a pivot within a protective casing carried by the part provided with the other blade, said protective casing having a bottom edge spaced from said other blade to define a slot for receiving the material to be cut.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of an example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view from one side of pair of scissors according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a view from the other side of the pair of scissors; and
Figure 3 is a section taken along the line 3-3 of
Figure 1.
The pair of scissors comprise a metal blade 10 fixed to a part 11 formed of plastics material, the part 11 having a handle 12 and a casing portion 13.
The casing portion 13 has a bottom.edge 14 spaced above the cutting edge 15 of the blade 10 and defines with the blade 10 a slot 16.
Secured to the part 11, by means of a pivot pin 17, is a part 18 also formed of a plastics material, the part 18 having a metal blade 19 and a handle 20. The blade 19 the part 18 can be moved about the pivot pin 17 within the casing portion 13 and the blade 19 co-operates with the blade 10.
The bottom edge 14 of the casing portion 13 is provided with arcuate recesses 21 of different diameters to enable rods or tubes to be received therein and cut by the blades 10 and 19.
Because the blade 19 when effecting a cutting operation moves within the casing portion 13, the blades 10, 19, when open, are safe and a child cannot poke a blade into his or her eye or the eye of another person and due to the slot 16, a child cannot place a finger between the blades 10, 19 and a finger cannot be placed in direct contact with a blade 10, 19.
The casing portion 13 can have many shapes or configurations. Preferably the handles 12 and 20 are shaped so as to be comfortably engaged by the finger and thumb of a child's hand.
The blades 10 and 19 are preferably formed by a ceramic sintered material. Such material has a low degree of friction and therefore the recesses 21 serve to hold the rod or tube during cutting and
prevent the rod or tube sliding along the blades 10,
19.
1. A pair of scissors having one blade movable about a pivot within a protective casing carried by the part provided with the other blade, said protective casing having a bottom edge spaced from said other blade to define a slot for receiving the material to be cut.
2. A pair of scissors as claimed in claim 1, in which the bottom edge of the casing is provided with recesses of differing sizes.
3. A pair of scissors as claimed in claim 2, in which the recesses are arcuate recesses.
4. A pair of scissors as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the blades are formed of metal and the remaining parts are formed of plastics material.
5. A pair of scissors as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, in which the blades are formed of a sintered ceramic material and the remaining parts are formed of plastics material.
6. A pair of scissors as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the casing has the profile of an animal.
7. A pair of scissors substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
