  • compression gloves means gloves designed to apply precise, specified pressure in all areas of the hand, which pressure may be uniform or non-uniform across said areas, depending on the application.
  • Such gloves find a number of applications, for example in reducing or preventing the effects of such ailments as tendinitis, arthritis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, oedema and swelling as well as cramping and fatigue. In particular, they are used in the treatment of lymphoedema.

Integral incorporation is to be distinguished from fixation methods, like attaching strips of material to the outside of the glove after manufacture.
  • the glove of the present invention may be manufactured by any fabric manufacturing method, for example knitting or weaving. Preferably, it is knitted.
  • the present invention provides a knitted compression glove comprising at least one adapted portion, which at least one adapted portion is integrally knitted into the glove and has an extensibility differing from that in the adjacent parts of the glove.
  • references herein to "integrally knitted" means that the yarns of the adapted portion are interlinked by knitting to the yarns of the adjacent parts of the glove, such that there is a seamless transition between said at least one adapted portion and the adjacent parts of the glove.
  • the same yarns used to knit the adjacent parts of the glove are used to knit the at least one adapted portion.
  • different yarns are substituted in to knit the at least one adapted portion.
  • Each adapted portion may have a higher or lower extensibility than the adjacent parts of the glove and may have an extensibility differing from that of some or all of the other adapted portions.
  • all the adapted portions have a lower extensibility than the base-fabric of the glove.
  • the adapted portions can be located anywhere on the glove to achieve the desired aim of eliminating areas of excessive slack and or tension.
  • the glove comprises a wrist portion and a hand portion located distally thereof (moving towards the finger-tips), the adapted portions advantageously all being located in the hand portion. More preferably still, the adapted portions are located in the regions of said hand portion where problems of excessive slack or tension most often occur.
  • the adapted portions on the palmar and dorsum sides may be connected to comprise a single adapted portion of uniform extensibility but may also comprise two discrete adapted portions of differing extensibility.

  • an adapted portion is present in the web spacing between thumb and forefinger on only one of the palmar and dorsum sides or is present on both sides, but comprises a single adapted portion of uniform extensibility, then it is preferred that this single adapted portion have a lower extensibility than that of both the base fabric and that of the other adapted portions.
  • the maximum stretch for adapted portions of the glove may be 30% to 110%.
  • the maximum stretch for the adapted portions of the glove is 40% to 100%, more typically 50% to 80%.
  • the maximum stretch for adjacent parts of the glove parts of the glove adjacent to the adapted portions may be 50% to 115%, more typically 80% to 110%.
  • the differing extensibility of the adapted portions can be effected in a number of ways, for example by incorporating thermosetting fibres in the above-mentioned areas, which thermosetting fibres are then thermoset by application of heat. By adjusting the proportion of thermosetting fibres, the extensibility of the adapted portions can be regulated.
  • the differing extensibility is effected by employing a different, for example tighter, knit in the adapted portions.
  • This has the advantage of reducing the number of processing steps involved in making the product.
  • extensibility can be regulated to within fine tolerances by this method by making small adjustments to the type of knit. Examples of the types of stitches which can be used in the adapted portions is half-cardigan, half-cardigan with floats 1x1 rib and 1x1 (half-gauge) half-cardigan.
  • the adapted portions are effected by altering the knit, said portions generally exhibit a different thickness from the adjacent parts of the glove.
  • the adapted portion in the region corresponding to the area of the hand covering the distal palmar crease and an area to either side thereof along a length of said palmar crease, the adapted portion in the region corresponding to an area of the hand covering the thenar crease and an area to either side thereof along a length of said crease, the adapted portion in the region corresponding to an area of the hand in the web-spacing between the thumb and forefinger on the palmar and dorsum sides of the hand and the adapted portion in the region corresponding to an area of the hand in the centre of the back of hand all comprise 1x1 (half-gauge) half-cardigan stitches; the adapted portion in the region corresponding to an area of the hand located between the knuckles advantageously comprises stitches knitted such that all needles are half-cardigan with floats (miss).
  • the base-fabric of the glove is advantageously knitted such that the needles are all half- cardigan.
  • the glove according to the present invention can be knitted in a plurality of pieces and then sewn together, or can be made in one piece, which is then sewed together along a single seam, or can even be knitted in a single, seamless piece.
  • the advantage of knitting it in one piece is that only one seam (as opposed to many) or even no seams require to be stitched, thus reducing the number of process steps involved.
  • the fewer the seams the less the irritation caused to the skin beneath by the presence thereof.
  • the glove can comprise yarn of one or more of a number of different materials, for example nylon, cotton viscose, polypropylene and polyester.
  • the yarn is of nylon.
  • a particularly suitable type of nylon is 2/78/20 nylon.
  • the yarn is of a proprietary nylon called TACTELTM, which has the advantage of possessing the same strength as nylon and, in addition, a particularly high softness, beneficial in the present field of application.
  • the yarn is employed in combination with elasticated yarn.
  • the elasticated yarn may be any commonly used type of elasticated yarn, for example latex or synthetic elastines, like LYCRATM.
  • the yarn comprises LYCRA TM, which avoids the known disadvantage of latex that it can cause allergic reactions in some people.
  • the overall weight of the glove will be within the range of 300 g/m 2 to 600 g/m 2 .
  • the weight of the base material of the glove will be in the range of 300 g/m 2 to 550 g/m 2 , more typically 315 g/m 2 to 500 g/m 2 .
  • the base material may have a weight of approximately 468 g/m 2 .
  • a suitable base material may have a weight of approximately 384 g/m 2 .
  • the material of the glove can be knitted in various ways.
  • the base-fabric comprises a two-way stretch knit of nylon plain knit, a knitted elastic yarn and inlaid elastic yarn.
  • a two-way stretch knit affords an advantageous degree of conformability.
  • the glove according to the present invention may or may not have finger portions, depending upon the precise application.
  • the invention in a second aspect, relates to a process for manufacturing a compression glove, comprising the step of fabricating said glove such that it comprises at least one adapted portion, which at least one adapted portion is integrally incorporated into the fabric of said glove and has an extensibility differing from that in the adjacent parts of the glove.
  • said process comprises the step of knitting said glove such that it comprises at least one adapted portion, which at least one adapted portion is integrally knitted into the glove and has an extensibility differing from that in the adjacent parts of the glove.
  • the invention relates to the use of the above- defined compression glove in methods of treatment of the human body.

  • this side of the glove has three adapted portions (5,6,7) surrounded by base-material (8): a region (5) corresponding to the area of the hand covering the distal palmar crease and an area to either side thereof; a region (6) corresponding to an area of the hand covering the thenar crease and an area to either side thereof and a region (7) corresponding to an area of the hand in the web-spacing between the thumb and forefinger.
  • This embodiment also comprises finger-portions (9).
  • the main adapted portion (7) sits very much in the body of the hand.
  • the depth of the main adapted portion (7) as shown in this embodiment may be approximately 5 cm and the width of the main adapted portion (7) may be approximately 7 cm, although any suitably sized adapted portion may be used.
  • adapted portion of the region (5) which corresponds to the area of the hand covering the distal palmar crease may be approximately 3% of the total area of the glove and typically have a fabric thickness in the range of 1.02 mm to 1.10 mm.
  • the adapted portion of the region (6) corresponding to an area of the hand covering the thenar crease may suitably cover approximately 4% of the total area of the glove and typically have a fabric thickness in the range of 1.02 mm to 1.10 mm.
  • the adapted portion of the region (7) which corresponds to an area of the hand in the web-spacing between the thumb and forefinger on the palmar side of the glove may typically cover approximately 5% of the total area of the glove.
  • the adapted portion of the region (7) which corresponds to an area of the hand in the web-spacing between the thumb and forefinger on the palmar may have a fabric thickness in the range of 1.06 mm to 1.17 mm.
  • the fabric thickness of the adapted portion of the region (5) which corresponds to the area of the hand covering the distal palmar crease may typically be approximately 1.15 mm whilst for a light weight glove the fabric thickness of this region may be approximately 1.11 mm.
  • the base material may suitably have a fabric thickness in the range of 1 mm to 1.07 mm.
  • the fabric thickness of the base material will be approximately 1.05 mm and for a light weight glove preferably 1.01 mm.
  • Figure 3 shows the dorsal view of a glove according to the invention.
  • this side of the glove has five adapted portions (11 ,12,13): the regions corresponding to areas of the hand located between the knuckles (11 ); a region (12) corresponding to an area of the hand in the web-spacing between the thumb and forefinger and a region (13) corresponding to an area of the hand in the centre of the back of hand.
  • the regions corresponding to areas of the hand located between the knuckles (11 ) have differing thickness from the base material (8) enabling these regions to sit between the knuckles.
  • the adapted portions between the knuckles (11 ) are increased in size towards the thumb.
  • the length of these adapted portions between the knuckles (11 ) may be 5 cm, 3.5 cm and 2 cm, for a medium sized glove.
  • the adapted region (13) corresponding to an area of the hand in the centre of the back of the hand is typically approximately 6 cm from the wrist for a medium sized glove. This area, as with the web- spacing area, is prone to wrinkling as excess material can become slack when flexing the hand.
  • the adapted portions on the dorsal side as with adapted portions on the palmar side, may have adapted portions of varying sizes.
  • the adapted portions (11 ) which are located in the regions of the glove which correspond to areas of the hand located between the knuckles may typically be 1 % in area of the total glove area.
  • the adapted portions (11 ) which correspond to areas between the knuckles may have a fabric thickness in the range of 1.02 mm to 1.10 mm.
  • the fabric thickness of the adapted portions (11) may be approximately 1.08 mm and for a light weight glove approximately 1.04 mm.
  • Adapted portions (12) corresponding to an area of the hand in the web-spacing between the thumb and forefinger on the dorsal side may suitably be 0.5% of the total glove area.
  • An apt range of fabric thickness for this dorsal web-spacing adapted portion (12) between the thumb and forefinger may be 1.10 mm to 1.17 mm.
  • a fabric thickness of approximately 1.15 mm is a suitable thickness for a standard weight glove for the portion (12) which corresponds to an area of the hand in the web-spacing between the thumb and forefinger on the dorsal side
  • a fabric thickness of approximately 1.11 mm may be a suitable thickness for this adapted portion (12) for a light weight glove.
  • adapted portion (13) of the glove correspond to an area of the hand in the centre of the back of the hand may be 1.5% of the total area of the glove.
  • a typically fabric thickness range for the adapted portion (13) of the glove corresponding to the area of the hand in the centre of the back of the hand may be 1.10 mm to 1.17 mm.
  • this may be 1.15 mm and for a light weight glove may be 1.11 mm.
  • Figure 4 illustrates a preferred knitting-pattern employed in the region (5) corresponding to the area of the hand covering the distal palmar crease and an area to either side thereof; the region (6) corresponding to an area of the hand covering the thenar crease and an area to either side thereof (which region has a thickness of 1.08mm in this embodiment); the region corresponding to an area of the hand in the web-spacing between the thumb and forefinger on the palmar (7) and dorsum (12) sides of the hand (which region has a thickness of 1.15mm in this embodiment) and the region (13) corresponding to an area of the hand in the centre of the back of hand (which region has a thickness of 1.15mm in this embodiment).
  • This knit is 1x1 (half-gauge) half-cardigan, shown as four repeating steps in the figure. It should be noted that, in this embodiment, the regions (7,12) in the web spacing on both palmar and dorsal sides of the hand comprise a single adapted portion of uniform extensibility.
  • Fig.5 illustrates a preferred knitting pattern employed in the regions (11 ) corresponding to areas of the hand located between the knuckles (which regions have a thickness of 1.08mm in this embodiment).
  • all the needles are on half cardigan with floats - illustrated as four repeating steps.
  • Fig.6 illustrates a preferred knitting pattern, shown as two repeating steps, for the base-fabric of the glove, namely all needles half-cardigan.
  • the thickness of the material in this region is 1.05 mm.
  • the glove illustrated in figures 2-4 is preferably made of 2/78/20 nylon combined with 156dtex LYCRATM the fabric having a 475dtex LYCRATM thread inlay.
