- a locking mechanism for a sliding door/window includes a rod movable horizontally through the frame of the window or door perpendicular to the direction of travel of the door/window, the rod being dimensioned to engage a hole in a surface on the remote side of the frame, and clamping means for engaging the rod and releasably retaining it in the hole.
- the rod comprises a bolt slidable from a first position in which the surface engaging end is clear of that surface, and a second position in which it engages the hole, the bolt including means for biasing it to the first position.
- the biasing means comprises a coiled tension spring.
- the bolt may be slidable to a second position which is one of a series of positions in which it engages the hole at various depths.
- the clamping means may comprise a pair of clamps or calipers for retaining the bolt in any of the series of positions, the bolt including a series of grooves for accommodating the engaging surfaces of the calipers.
- the bolt includes sloped sections extending rearwardly into the grooves. In this specification the surface engaging end of the bolt is regarded as the front end thereof. The rearwardly sloping sections function to ensure that if the calipers do not cleanly engage one of the series of grooves, slight adjustment of the bolt will result in the sloping sections directing it cleanly into the next available groove.
- the calipers are biased to the bolt engaging positions, preferably by means of a coiled tension spring.
- the calipers comprise a pair of spaced apart members pivotally mounted on a base plate, the members having a bolt engaging end and a rear end, the rear ends of the members having a coiled tension spring extending therebetween for biasing the calipers to the bolt engaging position.
- a spring extends between a pair of spaced apart cheek elements straddling the rear ends of the calipers, the rear ends of the calipers including recess for engaging the cheek elements.
- the front ends of the members may comprise a metal plate including a semi-circular cut out for engaging the grooved bolt.
- the calipers are operable by means of a lever locking mechanism in which the turning of the key drives a V-shaped block forward to engage the rear of the calipers and urge them towards each other. This has the effect of opening the calipers and releasing the bolt. The bolt then returns to the first position under the action of the coiled spring associated therewith.
- the V-shaped block is mounted on a sliding plate which is driven by the turning of the key.
- the locking mechanism is contained within a housing which includes a hollow cylindrical protrusion perpendicular to the door or window, in which the hold is slidable.
- the bolt may be provided with a head having a diameter slightly smaller than the internal diameter of the cylinder to prevent any unauthorised attempt to lever the bolt or otherwise tamper with it.

- a locking mechanism for attachment to the sliding leaf of a sliding door or window comprises a metallic housing 10 having a cylindrical extension 12 in which a grooved bolt 14 is slidable.
- the bolt slides transversely through the door into the fixed leaf or a wall behind the sliding leaf.
- a suitable hole is provided for the bolt to engage.
- the bolt is secured in this position by clamping means located within the housing. The bolt is released to open the door by turning the key 16.
- the locking mechanism comprises a base plate 18 on which is mounted clamping means in the form of a pair of calipers 20,22. These are pivotable about 24 and 26 by means of which they are mounted.
- the calipers have cutouts 30 near the front ends for engaging the grooves in the bolt, the amounts registering with the hole 28 in the base plate 18.
- the rear ends 34 are linked by a coiled tension spring 36 which biases them towards each other (as shown in Figure 4) which opens the calipers.
- the spring is mounted between a pair of cheek elements 32 which engage shaped recesses 33 in the rear ends 34 of the calipers.
- the opening and closing of the calipers is controlled by a four or five lever lock mechanism 37 which drives a V-shaped plare 38.
- the bit 40 of the key drives the V-block forward to engage the rear ends of the calipers, forcing them towards each other to open the calipers. This frees the bolt and permits it to spring back out of the hole in the wall or fixed leaf under the action of the tension spring 42.
- the bolt is grooved with the front portion 44 of each groove sloping rearwardly to ensure that the calipers slide firmly into the correct groove.
