  • a polyester resin containing plasticizer is also included in the inventive formulation (Uniplex 670-P Plasticizer). Mixing of two nitrocellulose polymers having different degrees of nitration induces a more uniform film formation as compared to conventional formulations. The polyester resin containing plasticizer flexibilizes the resulting coating.
  • the elongation modulus of the polyester resin plasticizer contributes to the durability of the film and represents a ductile coating as compared to conventional nitrocellulose films containing other hydrophobic synthetic polymers such as polymethacrylate.

  • a pigment, dye or fragrance compound is added to the composition in lieu of solvent. Generally, a pigment, dye or fragrance are present from 0.1 to 5% by total weight.
  • a pigment according to the present invention illustratively includes particulates silica; alumina; titania; polymeric particulate, such as dendrimers, polymeric particulate, polystyrene and methacrylate spheres; topically acceptable metal oxides, nitrides, sulfides; and mixtures thereof. It is appreciated that the pigment is intrinsically colored or phosphorescent or alternatively coupled with an organic dye compound.
  • Texturing agents are also operative within the present invention.
  • Texturing agents according to the present invention illustratively include bentonite, colloidal silica, mica, metallic flake, and talc.
  • the amount of texturizing agent operative in the present invention ranges from 0.1 to 4% of the total weight of the composition.

  • Moisturizing agents illustratively include alkylene glycols including ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, butylene glycol; saccharide alcohols such as glycerol, tetratol, pentatol, hexatol and sorbitol, and mixtures thereof.
  • a moisturizing agent according to the present invention accounts for from 0.1 to 5% by total weight of the formulation. While the moisturizing agent according to the present invention is readily added at any stage of the formulation process, preferably the moisturizing agent is added after dissolution in a solvent.
  • the solvent is selected to form a stable clear solution of polymers and plasticizers having a volatility such that the fingernail coating composition of the present invention retains a tack within two to ten minutes after application depending upon ambient temperature with subsequent gradual curing to form well ordered films.
  • the solvent is a mixture of miscible organic solvents illustratively including alkyl phthalates, esters, ketones, aldehydes, ethers, alcohols, toluene, alkanes and the like where the molecular weight of component solvents is generally less than 500. More preferably, the molecular weight is less than 300. Control of the volatility of the solvent is optionally maintained by the use of chemically similar component solvents with varying volatilities.
  • butyl acetate is utilized to solubilize solutes much the same as ethyl acetate yet has a lower vapor pressure.
  • solvent identities and proportions are selected to form azeotropes thereby yielding vaporization characteristics for solvent mixtures resembling single solvents.

  • the fingernail coating compositions of the present invention are tested for mechanical durability by applying the formulation to a preformed acrylic simulated nail using a small brush. The resulting coating is dried fifteen minutes and approximately 0.2 weight percent of carbon black is mixed into the fingernail coating composition.
  • a SCOTCH BRIGHT (3M Corporation) abrasive pad is placed on top of the white acrylic synthetic nail which has been overcoated with the fingernail coating composition of the present invention.
  • a one pound weight is placed on top of the SCOTCH BRIGHT pad and the pad agitated until the white of the underlying acrylic substrate is visible.
  • the fingernail coating compositions of the present invention illustrate a greater than 5% duration of abrasion time before the acrylic substrate was visible, as compared to retail fingernail coating compositions.
  • the fingernail coating compositions of the present invention are placed in a commercial package including a one-half ounce glass bottle having a threaded opening.
  • a lid having complementary threads to the bottle and a concentric applicator brush adapted to insert within the bottle opening selectively seals the bottle.
  • Application instructions illustratively include spreading the inventive composition onto a nail surface and waiting approximately ten minutes for solvent evaporation to yield a chip-resistant coating.
