Abstract

A cleaning product (1) comprises a base sheet (2) and at least one layer of filaments or split yarns (3) oriented in one direction, the base sheet (2) and the layer (3) are stacked and bonded together at a plurality of bonding lines (4) extending in a direction intersecting with the one direction, and the base sheet (2) is cut together with the layer (3) intermittently in the intersecting direction between adjacent bonding lines (4) to form cutting portions (5), thereby forming brushing portions (6) with the layer (3). The cleaning product (1) can be produced simply and conveniently at small cost. Further, it also has an excellent dust collecting effect.

The term "cutting portion" as originally used in the claims was vague and confusing. Therefore, in this amendment, the term "cutting portion" is replaced with the term "slit" . Also, other indefinite expressions are amended.
The claim 1 is further amended by adding two features:
(1) the layer comprises crimped fibers; and
(2) individual bonding lines are in a "V shaped pattern, and slits are formed to extend on a "V shaped line parallel to and between said bonding lines.
These two features (1) and (2) are disclosed in the cited document (EP 0 923 902 A), which claims priority of Japanese Patent Application No. 9-346018 filed on 16 December 1997. On the other hand, the present invention claims priority of Japanese Patent Application No. 10-357787 filed on 16 December 1998, which also claims priority of Japanese Patent Application No. 9-346018. However, Japanese Patent Application No. 9-346018 per se never discloses these two features (1) and (2), because they were newly added at the time of filing EP 0 923 902 A and Japanese Patent Application No. 10-357787. Therefore, because the priority date of the present invention (16 December 1998) is earlier than the publication date of EP 0 923 902 A (23 June 1999), the amended claim 1 limited by the features (1) and (2) is novel and involves an inventive step.
If required, we will submit the translations of the priority documents for Japanese Patent Application Nos. 9-346018 and 10-357787.
The crimped fibers provide a bulky feel and an excellent dust-collecting effect, as compared with non-crimped fibers or rectangular sheets. The V- shaped bonding lines provide an excellent appearance and an excellent dust-collecting effect in any wiping directions. Moreover, in its production process, the heat emboss roll with a V-shaped bonding line pattern can gradually provide an appropriate pressure while preventing the displacement of fibers, whereby the layer is made considerably flat and securely bonded to the base sheet. On the other hand, the heat emboss roll with a bonding line pattern of Fig. 1 or 5(c) can not provide a pressure gradually but at one time, so that the fibers are not bonded to the base sheet securely. The heat emboss roll with a bonding line pattern of Fig. 5(A) or 5(B) can gradually provide a pressure, but results in an uneven surface or the displacement of fibers to one side of the product.
The claim 28 as to a production process of a cleaning product is also amended by adding those two features (1) and (2), and further clarifies the use of a heat emboss roll.
