Description

(54) A COVERING (;1) We, ELSON & ROBBINS LIMITED, a British Company of Long Eaton, Nottingham, NG10 4HL do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a Patent may be granted to us and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement: - The present invention relates to a covering for furniture and, in particular, to a covering for vehicle seats such as cars.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a multi-layered cowering for furniture having a first layer which defines an outer facing layer of web material, a second layer adjacent to the first layer, the second layer being of a meltable synthetic material and being thicker than the first layer, and a third layer spaced from the first layer by the second layer, the third layer serving as the backing, the first and third layers being initially porous to the material of the second layer, the material of the second layer having been melted at spaced areas to bond the first and layers directly to one another, and the third layer being a layer of webbing which is bondable to a substratum of foamed plastics material.
The third layer is a layer of webbing and is preferably made from natural yarns or fibres, such as cotton. The third layer may be bonded for instance, by flame bonding or a suitable adhesive to the substratum of foamed plastics material which may, for example by polyurethane. The polyurethane may be of either the polyether or polyester type.
The second layer is conveniently formed of polyvinyl chloride which may be in the form of a foamed sheet, fibres or wadding.
Advantageously, the first and third layers are bonded to one another along discrete lines which are arranged to bound discrete zones.
The first layer may be of a webbing formed from natural or synthetic yarns, if desired, the face of the first layer facing the second layer may be roughened, for instance, by brushing to create a pile in order to enhance the bonding between the melted second layer and the first layer. This is particularly desirable in the case where the first layer is made from nylon.
If the first or third layers are made of a synthetic material then the material of the second layer is chosen to have a lower melting point than either of the other layers.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a method of making a covering for furniture as defined above wherein the three layers are laid one on top of the other and subsequently the first layer is bonded directly to the third layer by melting the second layer discrete areas. Preferably, the first layer is bonded to the third layer along discrete lines which are arranged to bound discrete zones.
Melting of the second layer may either be brought about by heat and pressure or by the high frequency dielectric bonding technique.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which: - Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view, partly broken away of a covering according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view on an enlarged scale of the covering of Figure 1 taken along the line II-Il; In the drawings the covering according to the present invention is generally shown at 10 and includes a first outer layer 11, a second layer 12 and a third layer 13.
The first layer is a web material which may be formed from either natural or synthetic fibres or yarns. The third layer 13 in the illustrated embodiment is made up from a layer 14 of a foamed plastics material such as polyurethane to which is bonded a layer 15 of a web material made up from cotton yarn.
Layers 14 and 15 are bonded together either by suitable adhesive or flame bonding.
The second layer 12 is formed from a meltable plastics material such as polyvinyl chloride which is in the form of a foamed sheet, fibres or wadding. The thickness of layer 12 is chosen to be substantially greater than layer 11 so that when layer 12 is melted for the purpose of bonding the first layer to the third layer the thickness of the second layer in that area is considerably reduced to define a depression 16. Thus, the effect of stretching the first layer between the areas of melting of the second layer produces a relief effect.
As illustrated in Figure 1, the areas of melting the second layer are in discrete lines 20 which bound discrete zones 21. If desired, the lines 20 may be curved to allow for variation in styling. The first and third layers are chosen to be porous to the second layer when melted so that once the melted second layer is hardened a strong bond is produced between the first and third layers.
Consequently, should synthetic materials be used for either making up the first and/ or third layers the material of the second layer should be chosen to have a lower melting point than either of the first or third layers.

A multi-layered covering for furniture having a first layer which defines an outer facing layer of web material, a second layer adjacent to the first layer, the second layer being of a meltable synthetic material and being thicker than the first layer, and a third layer spaced from the first layer by the second layer, the third layer serving as the backing, the first and third layers being initially porous to the material of the second layer, the material of the second layer having been melted at spaced areas to bond the first and third layers directly to one another, and the third layer being a layer of webbing which is bondable to a substratum of foamed plastics material.
