Definitions
- the present invention relates to an apparatus for removing residual cleaning chemicals from water.
- a number of common chemical cleaning products are used. These are, in particular, hard surface cleaners, metallised floor polish, stripper for metallised floor polish, detergent, disinfectant, low-foam "scrubber-drier” floor cleaners, anti-bactericidal products (for toilets etc), and kitchen degreasers .
- the cleaning operative will accumulate a bucket full of wash water which is contaminated with any number of the above chemicals, and buckets of contaminated water are simply tipped down a sink or other drainage point, into the usual waste water drain system of the premises.
- the chemicals contaminating the water will contribute to the pollution of rivers, streams and ultimately the sea.
- an apparatus for removing residual cleaning chemicals from water the apparatus being in the form of a mobile unit mounted on ground-engaging wheels, and comprising a receptacle having an open top generally at waist level, into which a quantity of contaminated water may be tipped, and a body of active carbon material forming a filter, arranged for contaminated water tipped into said receptacle to pass upwardly through said filter.
- the apparatus is accordingly easy for cleaning personnel to use.
- the active carbon filter ensures effective removal of the residual cleaning chemicals from the water: because the contaminated water passes upwardly through the filter, rather than downwardly, it takes longer to percolate through the filter and this improves the filtering performance.
- the active carbon material is contained in a filter housing having an inlet for contaminated water at or adjacent its bottom and an outlet for de-contaminated water at or adjacent its top.
- a duct leads from the bottom of the receptacle to the inlet of the filter housing.
- the receptacle is mounted above the filter housing.
- the apparatus is in the form of a wheeled unit which can accordingly be moved to any desired location of use.
- the unit comprises a cabinet in which the filter housing is mounted.
- the cabinet has a hinged or pivoted lid which can be opened to gain access to the trough into which the contaminated water is to be poured.
- the outlet from the filter housing may be connected to a spout projecting from the cabinet, e.g. at its front: alternatively, the unit may have a space to receive an empty bucket, into which water from the filter outlet may pass.
- the body of active carbon material is contained in a cartridge which can be removed from the filter housing and replaced.
- the removed cartridge can be processed to free from it the chemicals into which, in use, it has become contained, so that the cartridge can subsequently be re-used.
- the cartridge comprises an enclosure, containing the active carbon material, which is perforated at least at or adjacent its opposite ends, for the inlet and outlet of water.
- the filter housing may comprise an elongate flexible tube containing the active carbon, the tube being perforated or water-permeable at or adjacent its opposite ends: the flexible tube can be bent into a coiled configuration, so reducing the height of the filter within the apparatus .
- a preferred active carbon material is the ECO-CARB type 28 coal-based carbon available from Sutcliffe Speakman Carbons Limited, of Ashton - in Makerfield, Lancashire, England. This material has the following properties:
- FIGURE 1 is an isometric view, partly cut-away, of a first embodiment of filter apparatus in accordance with the present invention
- FIGURE 2 is a section through the filter apparatus of
- FIGURE 3 is a schematic diagram of a second embodiment of filter apparatus in accordance with the present invention.
- a mobile filter apparatus which comprises a housing or cabinet 10 mounted on a set of four wheeled castors 12.
- the cabinet 10 may have a width of 480mm, a depth of 555mm and a height of 930mm.
- a lid 14 is hinged along its rear edge to the top, rear edge of the cabinet 10.
- a shallow trough 16 extends across the top of the cabinet but can be removed by lifting upwardly.
- a cylindrical filter housing 18 is mounted vertically within the cabinet 10, below the trough
- a pipe 20 extends vertically downwards, from a spout 17 projecting from the underside of the trough 16, to an inlet 22 into the filer housing 18, adjacent the bottom of the latter.
- An outlet pipe extends forwards from the filter housing 18, adjacent its top, and is connected to a tap 24 projecting from the front of the cabinet 10.
- the filter housing 18 has a lid 19 which can be removed but is normally locked in position to seal the top of the filter housing.
- a filter cartridge 26 is positioned within the filter housing 18 and comprises a cylindrical enclosure which is filled with active carbon granules.
- This cylindrical enclosure is a close fit within the filter housing 18 and comprises a vacuum- formed cylinder of perforated plastics sheet, and perforated plastics end caps.
- the filter housing 18 has a diameter of 160mm and a height of 380mm.
- the cleaning operative will open the lid 14 of the cabinet and tip a bucketful of contaminated cleaning water into the trough 16.
- the largest bucket normally used in the cleaning industry holds 20 litres of water: the trough 16 preferably has a volume of 20 litres, sufficient to contain all of the water tipped from a full, 20 litre bucket.
- the cleaning operative then closes the lid 14 : the contaminated water left in the trough 16 gradually flows down the pipe 20 and into the filter housing 18, percolating upwardly into the body of active carbon material.
- the filter is able to absorb 20 litres of water and will therefore absorb all of the water which had been tipped into the trough 16. Whilst the water percolates through the filter and whilst it remains in the filter, it is acted upon by the active carbon, the granules of which present an extremely large total surface area to the water, to remove the contaminating chemicals.
- the tap 24 at the front of the cabinet 10 is opened and an empty bucket placed under its spout: as the water from the newly-tipped bucket flows down the pipe 20 and into the filter housing, the water held in the filter, from the previously-tipped bucket, now flows out of the top of the filter housing and out of the tap 24 into the empty bucket placed below it .
- the water which flows out through the tap 24 is substantially decontaminated and is fit for re-use: a heater may be provided to heat the water as it flows out .
- the active carbon filter cartridge will serve to decontaminate a large number of buckets of water.
- the lid 14 is provided with a counting device, which may be operated by a magnet fixed to the top of the cabinet, which increments its count each time the lid is open.
- the counting device includes a display to provide a visual indication of the number of times the lid has been opened and therefore the number of buckets which have been emptied through the filter.
- the filter cartridge is removed and exchanged for a fresh one, after firstly removing the trough 16 and then removing the lid of the filter housing 18.
- the cartridge itself be processed to decontaminate it and render it fit for subsequent reuse.
- FIG. 3 there is shown a second embodiment of apparatus in schematic form.
- the apparatus is in the form of a trolley which comprises a base 30 mounted on a set of four wheeled castors 32 and provided with an upstanding handle 31 to facilitate pushing or fulling the trolley over the floor.
- the base 30 supports a vessel 34 which is divided into upper and lower chambers R and S by a partition 36.
- the upper chamber R has an open top at waist-height and forms a receptacle into which the cleaning operative may tip a bucketful of contaminated cleaning water.
- the base 30 also supports a filter housing 38 which receives a filter cartridge 40: the filter cartridge 40 is of the same construction as the filter cartridge 26 of the above- described apparatus of Figures 1 and 2.
- a duct 42 extends from the bottom of the chamber R, down through the centre and out of the bottom of chamber S, and into the bottom of the filter housing 38: a valve 44 is included in the duct 42, to control the rate of flow of contaminated water from the chamber or receptacle R to the filter.
- the filter housing 38 has an open top and is provided with a closure lid 46.
- the filter cartridge 40 seats, at its bottom periphery, on a peripheral seal 48 on the bottom of the housing 38: in fitting the closure lid 46, this lid bears on the top of the filter cartridge 40 to urge it down against the seal 48.
- the top of the filter housing 38 is formed with a peripheral duct or manifold 50 and with a series of apertures 52 communicating the interior of the filter housing with the manifold 50.
- a duct 54 extends from the manifold 50 to the chamber S: chamber S has an outlet duct 56 provided with a top (not shown) and also has an air vent 58.
- the cleaning operative may tip a bucketful of contaminated cleaning water into the receptacle or chamber R.
- This water flows down through the duct 42 and then upwardly into the filter housing 38 and percolates through the filter cartridge 40.
- the next bucketful of water to be emptied into the receptacle R will also flow into the bottom of the filter cartridge, via the duct 42, and percolate through the filter cartridge 40, so expelling filtered water out of the top of the filter housing 38 and into the chamber S, which forms a storage vessel.
- the storage chamber S may be emptied via its outlet tap 56.
- the chambers R and S and the filter housing 38 may be arranged in different positions, relative to each other, from those shown in Figure 3.
- the storage chamber 3 may be dispensed with, and the outlet 54 of the filter housing 38 arranged to discharge directly into an empty bucket : preferably the apparatus is formed with a space for receiving this bucket, supported on the base 30.
- the filter may comprise a flexible tube filled with the active carbon material, the tube being perforated or water-permeable at its opposite ends, for the inlet and outlet of water.
- the tube is bent into a coiled configuration within the apparatus, to take up only limited height, and coupled at its opposite ends to inlet and outlet couplings for the water.
- the tube may be approximately 1 metre long and 5 cm in diameter.
