Definitions
- This invention relates to changeable message signs suitable for outdoor use.
- Changeable message signs are in common use along roadways due to their versatility. Such signs may be permanently fixed or may be portable such as by trailer mounting of the signs. Such signs are often utilized in construction areas where they are more susceptible then normal signage to dirt and other debris. Where traditional static signs have sheet metal bases which are generally robust with respect to debris and the like, changeable message signs utilize clear plastic sign screens through which pixel elements are visible. The plastic in such applications are more fragile and subject to damage from debris, defacement or the like. Moreover, the replacement and/or repair of such signs can be extremely expensive .
- static metal signs are generally considered maintenance free, and may not be touched or serviced for extended periods of time, changeable message signs, particularly portable ones require periodic attention making replacement of plastic protective covers on such more convenient than traditional static signs. Additionally static signs typically utilize sheet metal panels for the sign base making attachment of protective sheets difficult.
- a portable changeable message sign utilizing changeable pixels for display of a message has a sheet of flexible transparent plastic extending over the sign face for protection thereof.
- Said flexible plastic sheet may be a single or multiple layers and may have opaque portions formed such as by silk screening to minimize reflective glare.
- Attachment means secures the flexible plastic sheet or sheets such as by way of an adhesive on one side of the sheet, by way of a clamping means extending around the periphery of the sign face, by heat shrinking, or by static attraction.
- a feature and advantage of the preferred embodiments of the invention is that the flexible plastic sheet material may be removed in the field to provide a clean sign face.
- the plastic sheet may have silk screened or other suitably applied opaque portions to define windows for the changeable pixels.
- a feature and advantage of preferred embodiments is that the plastic covering may provide some shock absorption characteristics thereby minimizing or limiting damage to the changeable message signs.
- FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a modular message sign with individual modules according to the invention.
- FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a changeable message sign according to the invention.
- FIG. 3 is a perspective view of a sign display module according to the invention.
- FIG. 4 is a side elevational view of a module according to the invention.
- FIG. 5 is a side elevation view of a module according to the invention.
- FIG. 6 is a detail view of a corner of the module of FIG. 3.
- FIG. 7 is a cross-sectional view taken at line 7-7 of FIG. 2.
- FIG. 8 is a view of a flexible transparent sheet according to the invention.
- FIG. 1 illustrates a modular message sign generally designated with the numeral 20 which comprises a trailer 22, a support structure 24, a plurality of mounting tracks 26 supporting a number of individual sign modules 30. Each of the sign modules have an exposed sign face portion 36 which together form a sign message screen 40.
- this portable changeable message sign is generally designated with the numeral 48 and comprises a support structure 50 as well as a changeable message board 52.
- the changeable message board 52 is a single integral message screen.
- Each of the sign faces of the signs of FIGS. 1 and 2 utilize flexible transparent sheet 58 for a protective layer over the respective sign faces.
- the sheet may be made of transparent P.V.C. or other known flexible plastic sheeting.
- the module will have a weather resistant enclosure 60 which includes a rigid transparent sign face 62.
- the transparent sign face may be totally transparent or may have only transparent portions as shown in FIG. 3 and designated with the numeral 64.
- Such transparent portions are positioned adjacent the pixels 70 which are light emitting diodes (LED's) in this example. Said LED's are attached to a circuit board 72 which is supported within the enclosure 60.
- LED's light emitting diodes
- the flexible transparent sheet may be cut to a size slightly less than the periphery 76 of the sign face portion 80. Such size is indicated by the dashed lines designated with the numeral 82.
- the weather resistant enclosure can have a circumferential groove 84 which follows the periphery of the sign face portion 80 and provides a fastening means for the flexible plastic sheet.
- the plastic sheet 57 may be secured to the sign module by way of a clamping member such as a tightenable plastic clamp extending around the enclosure in the groove 84.
- a clamping member such as a tightenable plastic clamp extending around the enclosure in the groove 84.
- an appropriately sized piece of plastic may be heat shrunk around the flange 86 formed by the groove 84 and the front 92 of the sign module.
- the plastic may be secured to the sign face portion also by way of an adhesive 95 or simply by way of a static cling mechanism such as disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 5,280,989 to Castillo. The disclosure of said patent is incorporated herein by reference.
- FIGS. 1 and FIG. 7 an alternate embodiment is shown in which a single non-removable sign module is attached to the support structure 50.
- This design utilizes a rigid transparent sign face 102 extending across and as part of the weather resistant enclosure 105.
- a single or a plurality of layers 108 are secured to the front of the transparent sign face such as by an adhesive layer on the inside facing surface of each of said flexible transparent plastic sheets.
- a frame may extend around to clamp or otherwise secure the edge portions of the flexible sheet.
- static cling may be utilized to secure the sheet.
- Confronting the inside surface 112 of the transparent sign face is a plurality of changeable pixels 116 which may either be LED's or may be mechanical flip panels as is well known in the art or a combination of the two.
