  • caller ID (where ID stands for identification). This allows the user of a given telephone to receive information about a n incoming call, such as the telephone number, city, and identity of the caller.
  • Type I caller ID messages are those that are provided to a suitably configured telephone that is "on hook.” For example, if the on hook telephone rings, at this time caller ID information o r messages transmitted by a remote central or local office, may b e displayed on a device or display built into or connected to th e telephone.
  • Type II caller ID messages are those that are provided to a suitably configured telephone that is "off hook," or active, i.e. engaged in a telephone conversation. For example, while a user is using th e telephone, caller ID information may be displayed on a telephone unit display, to indicate the identity of a caller for a second incoming call. The user at this point may decide, for example, whether to accept th e second call via a call-waiting service. Caller ID services can be difficult or complicated to implement in corded and wireless multi-line telephone systems. Such systems are becoming more prevalent.
