Abstract

The present invention relates to a hollow prosthesis for implantation which is made of a polymeric material such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or copolymers comprising tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) with hexafluoropropylene or TFE with perfluorovinylpropyle ester, wherein the comonomer content does not exceed 2 %. The prosthesis structure is characterised in that it comprises two inter-connected and inter-penetrating matrices, wherein one matrix is made of a polymer in the shape of nodes connected by fibrils, while the other matrix defines an empty space whose elements are connected together into a three-dimensional network. The amount of nodes, fibrils and empty-space elements is not constant per volumetric unit and is essentially arranged in the shape of a strip (S) which is wound on a core (C) defining the shape of the prosthesis body. The shape, size and configuration of the core correspond to the organ to be replaced or a part thereof. The prosthesis body (B) may further include a plait (P) which is spirally applied and is made of polytetrafluoroethylene, a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene, a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluorovinylpropyle ester, a metal or a carbon fibre. This invention also relates to a method for preparing a PTFE prosthesis, wherein said method comprises the following steps: mixing the starting material in the form of powder with a binder so as to obtain a paste; pressing the paste and extruding it so as to obtain a profiled preform; removing the binder; and stretching the profiled preform in order to obtain the target porosity in the material forming the body. This method is characterised in that the profiled preform is reshaped into a material layer having a thickness of between 0.03 and 0.2 mm. The stretching process is carried out along one or two axes until the prosthesis body is shaped.
