Abstract

A structural member comprises an elongated hollow case (110) including at least two thin metal shells (112), each side end of the shells having a flange (114) along its entire length and the flanges facing each other to form the hollow case, at least one of reinforcing end piece (120) to be engaged with an end portion of the case, and a filler moulded into the case. A reinforcing plate (130) is attached by using an adhesive such as epoxy resin to an inner surface of each of the thin metal shells to improve a tensile strength of the structural member. In addition, the reinforcing plate is provided with at least one cut-out portion and an appropriate number of projections formed on a side of the cut-out portion. The adhesive filling the cut-out portions functions as an additional means for improving the tensile strength of the structural member.
