Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a shipping container system particularly useful in the shipping of perishables such as flowers, wherein a quantity of water or water with a floral preservative is included in an inner, water proof vessel which is packed with cut flowers and inserted into an outer shipping container.
  • Cut flowers are presently shipped over long distances by land, sea and air. During such shipment, it is necessary to protect the plants against mechanical damage and also to ensure that shipping conditions are present for keeping the cut flowers for a maximum of service life. For example, it is necessary for some types of flowers to be shipped with their stems in water to maximize the cut flower life.

As seen from the dimensions in Figure 4, the water-proof vessel 12 is substantially a cube. • Figure 2 shows the vessel 12 in place. There is no attachment of the vessel 12 to the container 14, but it sits in place because of the sliding fit.
  • the upper part of the outer container 14 preferably has at least one pre-cool vent 54. Some of these pre-cool vents may be placed in the upper portion of the side walls of the outer container to form hand-holds 56 to aid in manually grasping and carrying the container system.
  • the container system 10 provides a distinct advantage in the provision of optimum useful life for the cut flowers. The bundling of flowers in a sheet of flexible film protects the flowers from physical damage because the cut flowers are already in their water-proof vessel 12 and stabilized by the cut film when they are inserted into the outer container. Thus, useful cut flower life is enhanced.
