Definitions
- the present invention relates to a covering panel of the kind set forth in the preamble of claim 1.
- Covering panels of the kind referred to above are usually manufactured with a view to being secured to a backing or support that can consist of a floor, a wall or a ceiling, or to laths or boards secured to a floor, a wall or a ceiling.
- a backing or support that can consist of a floor, a wall or a ceiling, or to laths or boards secured to a floor, a wall or a ceiling.
- a great number of such covering panels or tiles are required, said panels or tiles usually being formed with edges shaped to provide a tongue-and- groove joint between adjoining panels so as to ensure a flush transition from one panel to the next.
- Such a tongue-and-groove arrangement will, however, weaken the panel in the edge regions, making it necessary, especially when using cartoned plasterboard, to reinforce the edges by using fibre inlays or the like.
- the edge surfaces being held behind edge surfaces on adjacent panels will, if the material of the panel shrinks under the influence of fire, slide on the edge surface of this adjacent panel and thus seal the joint between the panels, in spite of this possible shrinkage.
- both a hidden securing and an improved fire protection are achieved, as a kind of labyrinth seal is provided along all four edges.
- the two panels may be manufactured from different materials and with different thicknesses, but it is preferred, as set forth in claim 5, that the panels consist of the same material and possibly, as set forth in claim 6, are manufactured integrally in one piece, and if so the edge surfaces, as set forth in claim 8, are formed by milling or moulding on a panel blank.
- Claim 10 indicates a preferred shape of the panel, whilst claim 11 indicates a preferred use of it.
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a covering panel according to an embodiment of the invention
- Figure 2 shows a cross-sectional view along the line II- II in the panel of Figure 1, as well as the securing of the panel by means of visible screws
- Figure 3 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of the invention
- Figure 4 shows a cross-sectional view corresponding to Figure 2 in the panel of Figure 3 , the latter being provided with fittings for securing it,
- Figure 7 is a perspective view of a panel with a laminated structure according to the invention.
- Figures 8-12 show cross-sectional views of various panels with a laminated structure according to the invention.
- the covering panel shown in Figures 1 and 2 comprises a first and a second major face 1 and 2, respectively, that are plane and parallel to each other, as well as edge surfaces 3, 4, 5, 6, of which the first set of adjacent edge surfaces 3, 4 are plane and form an acute angle 7 with the first major face 1, while the second set of adjacent edge surfaces 5, 6 are plane and form an acute angle 8 with the second major face 2, the two angles 7 and 8 being of the same magnitude.
- such panels can be secured to a backing or support with the first major face 1 facing the backing, the panel being secured to the backing by screws, e.g. along the edge surface 6, while the adjoining panel is secured to the backing by the engagement between the edge surfaces 6 and 4, respectively, of the two panels. A corresponding securing and a corresponding engagement is obtained between the edge surface 3 and 5, respectively.
- the covering panels will be secured to the backing or support by means of visible securing elements along the edge surface 5 and, if necessary, along the edge surface 6, while the securing to the backing or support is provided by the engagement with the side edges 6 and 5, respectively, on adjacent panels.
- a straight fitting 9 is provided, being secured to the first major face 1 of the panel, so that the panel can be secured along the edge surface 6 shown in Figure 3 by means of a securing element, such as a screw screwed through the straight fitting 9 and into the backing for the panel.
- a securing element such as a screw screwed through the straight fitting 9 and into the backing for the panel.
- a slat 10 of e.g. the same material as the panel is glued to the latter's first major face 1 along its edge surface 6, in this manner also achieving that both the slat 10 and the securing element are hidden by the adjoining panel with its edge surface 4 being brought into engagement with the edge surface 6.
- an additional covering of the joint between the edge surfaces 6 and 4, respectively, on two adjacent panels is achieved.
- a second panel 11 is secured to the first major face 1 of the first panel, said second panel having major-face dimensions and edge- surface shapes equal to and corresponding to, respectively, those of the first panel and being secured to the latter in a position, in which the second major face 22 of the second panel 11 faces and is secured to the first major face 1 of the first panel, the second panel 11 being offset relative to the first panel to make the second panel 11 protrude beyond the first panel along the latter' s second set of edge surfaces 5, 6, so that a securing element can be inserted through the second panel 11 for securing to the backing or support, and so that when the first set of edge surfaces 3 , 4 on the first panel are positioned to be secured to the backing by the second set of edge surfaces 5, 6 on adjacent panels already having been secured, then the first set of edge surfaces 23, 24 on the second panel 11 will be secured in a corresponding manner against the backing or support by the second set of plane edge surfaces 25, 26 on the second panel 11 of the adjacent panels having already been secured.
- the two panels can consist of the same material and be glued or otherwise secured to each other along the major faces 1 and 22, respectively.
- the second panel 11 can be made of a different material, as shown in Figure 10, making it possible to optimize the combined properties of the laminated structure, one of the panels e.g. having good properties with regard to sound absorption and heat insulation, ease of cleaning etc. , while the second panel 11 exhibits good properties with regard to strength, fire resistance etc..
- Figure 7 can be provided by, as shown in Figure 12, milling or moulding the edge-surface shapes in a panel blank manufactured in one piece, which, with regard to manufacture and economy, must be considered to be an advantage.
- An aesthetically pleasing effect, as well as an improved strength against damage during handling of the panels, can be achieved by chamfering the transition between the edge surfaces 5, 6 and the second major face 2 at the acute angle 8.
- a corresponding aesthetically pleasing effect can be achieved by, as shown in Figure 9, reducing the dimension of the visible panel at the edge surface 4 , so that when the panel system is assembled, a so-called shadow groove will arise between the edge surfaces 4 and 6.
- the preferred material for the panel according to the invention is cartoned plasterboard, but it is possible to achieve the same advantages with regard to the engagement between the panels and the preservation of their strength by using other materials. LIST OF PARTS
