- Portable combustion motor driven rock drills for hand held operation and typified by the brand names Cobra and Pionjar, are common among professional as well as amateur users of rock drilling equipment.
- This type of rock drill has so far been marketed without any device for containment or conveying of stone dust generated by the drill. Therefore the operator of the drill would by inevitable inhalation accumulate such dust in his lungs and after prolonged exposure he would be a high risk for developing silicoses.
- the purpose of this invention would be to prevent the operator from inhaling the dust by means of either a diverting device, where the dust is driven away directly by the flushing air emanating from the tip of the drill, or by a suction device driven either internally by the combustion motor's exhaust gases, or externally by means of a separate. power source. Variations of the invention would have the possibility to be used in combination with a dust separator in the form of e. g. a cyclone.
- the invention is a dust conveying device to protect the operator from inhaling the stone dust produced in the use of hand held combustion motor driven rock drills, where this device may be in the form of either a diverter, driven internally by means of the ordinary flushing air, emanating from the tip of the drill, or by a special suction device, driven internally by means of the exhaust gases of the rock drill motor, or externally by means of a separate power source.
- the device in its simplest form is a flushing air driven diverter, functioning in such a way that the flushing air, emanating from the tip of the rock drill, with the purpose of keeping the hole clean from produced stone dust by blowing it straight up out of the drilled hole, now the flushing air carrying the stone dust, instead is trapped by a collector, sealed against the surrounding ambient air and made wholly or partly of a soft pliable material, e. g. rubber, and placed over the drilled hole with air tight sealing against the surrounding rock as well as around the drill rod, so that the stone dust in this way, by means of a relatively short and wide hose, made out of e. g. plastic, is carried from the collector away to the side, instead of being directed straight up toward the face of the operator, which is now the case.

- the flushing air pressure may not suffice to do the work of blowing the hole clean from stone dust, and in addition carry the dust away from the risk zone of the operator by means of the said type of diverter.
- the flushing air must be supplemented by a coordinated suction device to remove the stone dust.
- the invention therefore includes an auxiliary ejector type of suction device, suitable for the said type of portable rock drill, and attached via vibration isolation directly to the rock drill body.
- connection between the motor's exhaust pipe and the ejector is accomplished by means of a heat resistant flexible tubing, preferably of metal, and of relatively short length in order to keep the exhaust gas back pressure at a minimum, which is particularly desirable for the two cycle motor assumed to be used in this case.
- the exhaust gas jet in the ejector creates the vacuum, that sucks up the stone dust by means of a flexible hose, preferably of plastic or rubber, adapted and attached to the collector located over the drilled hole and according to previous description sealing against the drill and the rock as well, so as to prevent ambient air from leaking in and load down the suction capacity.
- the mixture of air, exhaust gases and stone dust is transported away by means of a light, non-collapsable hose of e. g. reinforced plastic or rubber, with a diameter corresponding to the outlet of the diffusor. Due to the general requirement of low back pressure for two-cycle combustion engines, this hose, like the exhaust hose, should be kept reasonably short; a length of two or three meters would be considered sufficient to move the dust outside of the operator's immediate danger area.
- the length of the exhaust pipe can be adapted to the exhaust pulsation frequency to obtain an acoustic resonance in the exhaust pipe with a node of low pressure at the combustion chamber exit for improved scavenging of the two cycle motor cylinder.
- the exhaust gas driven ejector would mean improvements in the working environment of the operator in these respects, besides the lesser risk for him of contracting silicoses.
- Figures 1 - 4 show the functional principles of a stone dust conveying device for hand held combustion motor driven rock drills according to this invention.
- Figure 1 would explain the more important pails of the rock drill 1 , with handle 2 for the operator, the exhaust pipe 3, and the drill rod 4.
- the invention is shown in its simplest form, a diverter for stone dust, with a collector 5, centrally located over the drilled hole 8, where the collector is equipped with an exit hose 6, and the collector 5 is penetrated by the rock drill rod 4 with airtight sealing around the said rock drill rod, and with the open bottom portion of the collector 5 simultaneously also sealing against the rock 7.
- Figure 2 shows an ejector 10, driven via a heat resistant flexible tubing 9 by the exhaust gases of the rock drill combustion motor and where a hose 1 1 is used to suck away the stone dust flushed from the drilled hole 8, and then the dust is expelled by means of a larger hose 12, connected to the ejector outlet.
- FIG. 3 shows the ejector 10, installed on the rock drill by means of an attachment 13 with vibration isolation 14.
- Figure 4 shows a local dust separator 15, of e. g. cyclone type, for close attachement via a short pipe 16 from the collector 5 above and around the drilled hole 8, and with its exit 17 connected to the ejector 10 via the hose 1 1.
