Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for welding tube ends to each other while using gas protection.
- US patent Nos 3 095 844, 3 194 466, 4 828 160, DE patent No. 33 00 382 and DE patent application No. 37 28 184 teach various devices for ensuring that the shielding gas is concentrated in the welding site by establishing a plug to both sides of the welding site within the tubes to be welded to each other.
- these plugs form a substantially confined space m the tube interior around the welding site and gas protection may be introduced either from the outside of the tubes through a gap between the tube ends or by supplying gas protection to the confined space between the plugs from the free end of one of the tubes through a tubular conduit intended therefor.
- the plugs being hereby displaced in directions away from each other in the tube ends during introduction of the gas protection allows for the amount of air which is initially present between the two plugs to be diluted considerably in a simple manner by the air introduced between the tube ends whereby the amount of air present becomes insignificant relative to the amount of e.g. gas protection.
- the plugs serve to establish a safe zone in the tube interior around the welding site.
- the gas protection may be e.g. an inert gas which thereby dilutes the explosive or inflammable gas to such an extent that it no longer constitutes a risk, or by a gas which chemically neutralises the gas in the tube to eliminate its explosive or inflammable properties.
- This displacement may be carried out by means of a mechanical device but it may also be provided by supplying the gas protection under such pressure which is sufficient for forcing the plugs away from each other in the tube ends .
- the gas protection may be introduced into the space between the plugs in a particularly simple manner from the outside of the tube via the initially established gap.
- This may advantageously be effected by establishment of welding tongs having a substantially closed welding housing with openings for introducing tube ends into said welding housing, and wherein the welding housing is provided with a passage for the introduction of gas protection under pressure into the welding housing, and a welding means arranged for welding tube ends to each other inside the closed welding housing.
- the plugs may be of a foaming material and provided by foaming of the foaming material in each of the tube ends.
- the plugs of the foaming material are foamed within the tubes at a distance from the tube ends whereby an air-filled space is provided between the plugs and so that the tube ends are not soiled by the foamed material which may deteriorate the welding quality.
- the plugs may be made of a material which is dissolvable e.g. in water which allows removal of the plugs in e.g. very long tubes without necessitating particular equipment therefor, but simply by flushing the welded tubes with the fluid which may dissolve the plug, e.g. water.
- Figure 1 outlines a first embodiment of the invention in a first and a second position.
- Figure 2 outlines an alternative embodiment of the invention in a first and a second position.
- Figure 1 thus outlines principles and is a longitudinal sectional view along the ends of two tubes 1 and 2 that are located in a welding tool 3 in such a manner that the ends of the tubes 1 and 2 are caused to face towards each other whereby a narrow gap 4 is formed between the ends of the tubes 1 and 2 within the welding tool 3.
- the welding tool may optionally consist of known welding tongs which encloses the tube ends and secure them in their position relative to each other as shown in Figure 1.
- Welding tongs for welding tubes to each other are known in many different embodiments and therefore the details in the structure of the welding tongs are not shown herein as these details is of no consequence to the principles behind the way in which the invention functions .
- the welding tool forms a substantially confined space 5 around the tube ends of the tubes 1 and 2 and thereby around the welding site.
- the tubular end interiors are provided with plugs 6 and 7 which form a substantially proof barrier in the tubes 1 and 2 and delimit a space 8 in the tubes 1 and 2.
- the two plugs 6 and 7 are arranged in such a way that they are displaceable within the tubes and in directions away from each other whereby they may be caused to occupy an alternative position as shown in dotted lines.
- Displacement of the plugs may conveniently be effected by the supply of gas protection under pressure e.g. through a supply inlet 8 as shown to the confined space 5 formed by the welding tool whereby the gas protection enters the tubes via the slot 4 and thus influences the plugs 6 and 7 with a pressure that causes them to be displaced away from each other. Thereby the air or gas which was initially present between the plugs 6 and 7 will be diluted in dependence of the displacement of the plugs.
- Figure 2 illustrates an alternative and particularly convenient embodiment which, in principle, works in the same way as the embodiment shown in Figure 1 but wherein the two plugs 16 and 17 consist of a foaming material which has been foamed in the tube ends of both tubes 1 and 2 prior to arrangement thereof in the tool 3.
- the two plugs 16 and 17 of foamed material may be displaced away from each other to an alternative position relative to each other in the tubes 1 and 2 as shown in dotted lines.
- the foaming material used to form the foamed plugs 16 and 17 may in preferred embodiments consist of a material which is not dissolved by the gas used as gas protection whereby the foamed plugs 16 and 17 are not dissolved during the welding process.
- the foamed plugs 16 and 17 consist of a material which is readily dissolvable, preferably in water, thereby enabling removal of the plugs 16 and 17 following the welding procedure simply by flushing the tubes 1 and 2.
- the present invention is based on the movability of the plugs and therefore it is obvious to the skilled in the light of the above description to provide a plurality of more specific embodiments of the invention.
- gas protection may e.g. be provided by arrangement of a gas cartridge known per se in the space between the plugs 6 and 7, 16 and 17, which gas cartridge may be caused to discharge its contents of gas following arrangement of the ends of the tubes 1 and 2 opposite each other. This latter embodiment may be advantageous if it is desired to provide a welding which requires that the tube ends are in contact with each other during the welding operation.
