Definitions
- a special embodiment ofthe device according to the invention is characterized in that the laying unit is provided on a slide which is mounted so as to be displaceable in a direction transverse to the driving direction ofthe frame, in that the laying unit is provided with a sensor for keeping contact with an edge of a previously laid strip of product, and in that the device is provided with correction means for displacing the slide transversely to the driving direction ofthe frame in accordance with a deviation from the edge ofthe previous strip registered by the sensor.
- the movability ofthe slide, and thus ofthe laying unit, in a direction transverse to the driving direction ofthe frame, for example on guide rails, renders it possible to position the strip to be laid out in lateral direction as desired without adjusting the driving direction ofthe frame. This renders it possible not only to react much more directly to alignment variations in the preceding strip and driving direction variations ofthe device, but also to carry out the positioning fully automatically and independently, without the operator's attention being required for this.
- the device is in addition characterized in that the sensor comprises a feeler element at an end and is pivotably connected about a vertical shaft, in that the sensor is provided with pretensioning means for urging the sensor outwards, and in that the sensor is coupled to switching means for controlling the correction means.
- a preferred embodiment ofthe device is characterized in that the feeler element has a wedge shape widening in downward direction and, seen in the driving direction ofthe frame, is mounted between the free end ofthe second transporter and the pressure means.
- the wedge-shaped feeler element in this embodiment performs an auxiliary function in the sense that the edge ofa new strip of product to be laid out will be upset against the edge of a preceding strip of product by this element, whereupon both edges are jointly pressed down and into one another by the pressure means. This promotes a seamless joining together ofthe two strips.
- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of the device according to the invention
- Figs. 2A-2C are side elevations ofthe feeder unit ofthe device of Fig. 1 in consecutive stages in the process of taking up a roll of product;
- Fig. 3 shows part ofthe side elevation of Fig. 1 in greater detail
- Fig. 4 diagrammatically shows the transverse correction means ofthe device of Fig. l;
- the device of Fig. 1 is especially suitable for laying out rolls of turf and comprises an automotive frame 1 which is driven by a diesel engine with a hydraulic, continuously variable transmission to a caterpillar mounting 4.
- a drawn frame 2 accommodating the diesel engine is hinged to the automotive frame 1 and affords space to an operator 6 in the form of a seat 5.
- the drawn frame 2 can be vertically adjusted by means of a hydraulic cylinder 7. It will be obvious that these various provisions may also be made in alternative ways, for example with an alternative type of internal combustion motor or an electric motor, and that the caterpillar mounting may be replaced by individual wheels as the driving members, although a caterpillar mounting causes a lesser "wheel pressure" on the prepared, i.e. comparatively loose turf bed.
- the device For taking up and loading a roll of product 10, the device comprises a loading unit 20 provided with a set of gripper hooks 21 fastened to the ends ofa set of double lever arms 22.
- the parts ofthe lever arms 22 hinge relative to one another, which can be operated by means of a set of hydraulic cylinders 23.
- the lever arms 22 are hinged to the frame 1 and can be operated as a unit by means of a second set of hydraulic cylinders 24.
- the second set of cylinders 24 is fully moved out so that the gripper hooks 21 pivot forward and are moved over a tube 9 on either side ofa prepared roll, see Fig. 2A.
- the hydraulic cylinders 23 are so far moved out during this that the hooks move into position below the tube and the roll can be lifted.
- the roll 10 is pulled onto the device in that the set of cylinders 24 is withdrawn, see Fig. 2B, entering a storage position when the cylinders 23 are fully withdrawn.
- the roll 10 can be moved into the unwinding unit 30 through a complete extension ofthe cylinders 23, see Fig. 2C.
- the tube 9 will then lie free in front ofthe openings ofthe gripper hooks 21.
- the roll 10 can subsequently roll from the gripper hooks 21 under the influence of gravity towards the lowest point ofthe slightly curved transporter 31 , which lies farther to the rear than the ejection point.
- a second roll may be loaded and be carried along in the storage position, if so desired. All actions necessary for loading can thus be performed from the operator's seat 5.
- the unwinding unit 30 comprises a slightly curved transporter 31 which follows the contour ofthe roll 10 lying thereon over a certain circumferential distance.
- the transporter 31 When the transporter 31 is driven, the roll 10 will be made to rotate and unwind itself.
- the end 12 ofthe product to be laid out unwound into a strip is guided to the ground by a second transporter 32 which is directed downwards.
- the second transporter 32 is hinged to the frame 1 , in this example about a pivot shaft 34 which is at the same time a central shaft of a common driving roller 35 of the two transporters 31, 32.
- the two transporters are each approximately 130 cm wide and are accordingly suitable for the most widely used turf rolls with standard widths of 60 cm and 120 cm.
- Guiding means in the form of a guiding roller 36 suspended with hinging possibility from the frame 33 ofthe second transporter 32 are present at the free end ofthe second transporter 32.
- the guiding roller will press the strip 12 to be laid out against the end ofthe transporter 32.
- the guiding roller 36 is driven in a direction opposed to that ofthe transporter 32, so that the strip 12 can pass the guiding roller 36 without becoming upset.
- a contact surface 37 extends parallel to the transporter 32 to prevent the tail end ofthe product to be unwound from dropping off the transporter 32 when the roll has been almost finished.
- the contact surface 37 is hinged to an operational arm 8 which in its turn is hinged to the frame 33 of the transporter 32.
- the strip After leaving the transporter 32, the strip is received under pressure means in the form of a pressure roller 38 which presses the strip 12 over its full width against the ground.
- the turf bed has previously been prepared by means of a roller 39 which carries out a milling and/or aerating operation.
- the weight ofthe transporter 32 is largely compensated for by two gas springs 42 which are connected to the frame 1 on either side ofthe transporter 32, so that comparatively little force is required for lifting the transporter 32.
- the freely pivoting guide roller 36 will remain pressed home against the transporter 32 throughout the relevant control range because lifting ofthe guide roller 36 requires considerably more force.
- the guide roller 36 ensures that the device can react very directly to tension variations in the strip 12.
- the hinging transporter 32 is coupled to a hydraulic valve 40 which is part ofthe hydraulic drive ofthe unwinding unit 30 with the two transporters 32, 33 and the guiding roller 36.
- the second transporter 32 and the valve 40 are attuned to one another such that the angle ⁇ ofthe transporter 32 will assume a certain reference value under normal circumstances, corresponding to an ideal tension in the strip. If the tension should rise suddenly during operation and the angle ⁇ suddenly increases as a result, the valve 40 will be opened wider, whereby the unwinding speed ofthe roll is increased. This leads to a reduced tension in the strip with the driving speed remaining the same, and the tension will thus return to its former ideal value.
- the entire laying unit 3 including the unwinding unit 30 is arranged on a slide 70 which can be displaced transversely to the driving direction of the frame 1, which is depicted diagrammatically and in more detail in Fig. 4.
- the slide 70 is provided with correction means in the form of a hydraulic cylinder 71 whose one end is fastened to the slide 70 and whose other end is fastened to the frame 1.
- the laying unit 3 can be moved sideways with a travel of approximately 10 cm on either side ofthe frame 1 by means ofthe hydraulic cylinder 71.
- the sensors 53, 54 are hinged to a vertical shaft in two locations, i.e. substantially in the centre ofthe slide 70 and at an end of a control rod 55 which mechanically connects the two sensors to one another. If the preceding lane 11 is to the left ofthe device, the slide 70 is first moved by hand from the neutral position to the left. The relevant sensor 53 will swivel more strongly to the left as a result of this owing to its double-hinge connection.
- the control rod 55 is held back by a gas spring 56.
- the gas spring 56 is fastened to the centre ofthe control rod 55 and presses with the other end against a stop 58 which is fastened to the frame 1.
- the gas spring 57 ofthe inactive sensor 54 does not impede the active sensor 53 during this. This is because the unused gas spring 57 is not loaded since the distance between the centre ofthe control rod 55 and the unused stop 59 is greater than the length ofthe relevant gas spring 57.
- the end ofthe gas spring 57 which will indeed bear on the stop 59 when used, will lie clear as a result of this.
- the end ofthe control rod 55 is coupled to to electric switching means near the pivot point with the sensor 53 on the left, said means being coupled to a central processing unit for controlling the cylinder 71.
- the switching means comprise two contacts 60 arranged next to one another on the slide 70 ofthe laying unit 3 and together enclosing a stud 61 at the end ofthe control rod 55.
- the stud 61 is provided with adjustment possibility here, as are the two contacts 60, so that the neutral position and the switching sensitivity can be adjusted. Since the two feeler elements 50 are adjustable transversely to the driving direction, the left-hand and right-hand setpoints can be adjusted.
- the feeler elements should be separately adjusted on the two sides such that, with the switching means 60 in the neutral position and the laying unit 3 moved halfway to the left or right, the relevant feeler element 50 lies vertically below the edge ofthe strip 12 yet to be laid.
- This adjustment need be carried out only once as long as the width of the turf roll 10 to be laid out remains the same, because the roll is positioned in a fixed position on the unwinding unit 30 by means of adjustable stops.
- the feeler element 50 comprises two parts 51 , 52.
- the first part 51 has a wedge shape which widens in downward direction, so that the element will force itself with one of its flanks underneath the preceding lane 11 under the influence ofthe spring pressure and thus lift up the preceding lane 11 a little.
- the second part 52 is placed behind the first and is formed by a vertical edge which starts at the centreline ofthe wedge shape and is curved slightly inwards. As a result of this, the feeler element can never force itself farther than halfway the wedge shape under the preceding lane 11.
- a particularly efficient device for laying out a product wound into a roll is realized in this manner, which is capable of laying out the product free from folds and fractures under the desired tension, fully automatically and seamlessly aligned with the preceding lane, while being operated with only one hand.
