Definitions
- This invention pertains to the art of storage and dispensing and, more particularly, to a container and apparatus for easily and accurately dispensing medication.
- a tamper-resistant container is provided that easily dispenses medication, such as pills or tablets, but still denies, or significantly impairs, access to the contents to satisfy tamper-resistant concerns.
- the dispenser should also be easily convertible between different sizes of medication.
- the present invention contemplates a new and improved apparatus that overcomes all of the above- referenced problems, as well as others, and provides a simple, economical dispensing arrangement, preferably for use in distributing medicine in pill or tablet form.
- the tablet dispensing apparatus includes a first or reservoir portion that randomly stores the tablets and a second portion that guides the tablets to an opening for individual dispensing.
- a wheel selectively rotates and feeds the tablets to the opening.
- An arm is located adjacent the opening to prevent tablets from reentering the apparatus.
- a catch allows the wheel to rotate in only one direction and jogs the tablets to prevent jamming.
- a an actuating member selectively operates a finger and cog assembly to rotate the wheel.
- a spring returns the actuating member to its original position.
- the actuating member is located on the bottom of the enclosure and is engaged by depressing the entire enclosure against a rigid surface.
- different sized recesses are provided on a separate wheel to accommodate substantially different size tablets that can be easily substituted for the original wheel.
- the width of the dispensing apparatus can be easily altered, for example, by inserting a template.
- a principal advantage of the invention is the ease of dispensing tablets.
- Another advantage of the invention resides in the simplicity of design, manufacture, and operation. Yet another advantage is found in the precise dispensing of a single tablet at a time and the ability to prohibit unauthorized feeding of tablets into the container through the opening.

- FIGURE 2 is an end view, partially in cross- section of the apparatus of Figure 1;
- FIGURE 3 is a view similar to FIGURE 1 but showing a dispensing wheel and catch at a different rotational position of operation;
- FIGURE 4 is an elevational view of another preferred embodiment
- FIGURE 5 is an elevational view of still another preferred embodiment
- FIGURE 6 is a view similar to FIGURE 4 but showing an alternate actuating member and a safety lever option;
- FIGURE 7 is an elevational view of a modified dispensing apparatus that can be used with smaller size tablets or pills;
- FIGURE 8 is an end view taken generally from the right-hand side of FIGURE 7;
- FIGURE 9 is an end view of a second modification to the dispensing apparatus.
- FIGURES show a tablet dispensing apparatus or container 10 having a first or upper portion that serves as a storage bin or reservoir 12 (FIGURE 1) .
- the reservoir is enlarged and holds a number of tablets or pills 14 in random order.
- a second or lower portion of the reservoir has a width only slightly greater than the thickness of the tablets 14, defining a passageway 16 (FIGURE 2).
- the tablets ultimately exit the container through an outlet port or opening 20.
- a tablet flow regulator 22 is positioned in the passageway 16 as is best shown in FIGURE 1 and as will be described in greater detail below.
- a preferred form of container has two side walls 30, 32, a front wall 34, a rear wall 36, a top wall 38, and a bottom wall 40.
- the walls enclose the cavity 12 that stores a number of tablets and selectively dispenses them one at a time from the container.
- the walls are molded plastic and may be of transparent plastic to easily monitor the number of tablets remaining in the container.
- the front wall includes a tapered region 34a that interconnects upper and lower parallel wall regions 34b, 34c.
- the tapered wall region funnels the tablets into a lower passageway 42 defined between the wall region 34c and the rear wall 36.
- the lower passageway is dimensioned just slightly greater than the thickness of an individual tablet (FIGURE 2) .
- tapered internal walls 50, 52 are disposed in the interior cavity (FIGURE 1) along the lower passageway to direct the tablets toward the tablet flow regulator 20.
- a preferred tablet flow regulator 22 is a rotatable wheel 60 having recesses 62 spaced about its periphery.
- the wheel rotates in one direction about axis 64 within a generally circular cavity interposed between the lower passageway and the outlet opening.
- a pair of curvilinear walls 66, 68 encompass the wheel and have different radii measured from the axis of rotation 64 of the wheel 60.
- wall 66 has a greater radius than the wall 68, which is only slightly greater than the radius of the wheel. In this manner, the tablets received in the recesses of the wheel are substantially enclosed along the portion of the travel path abutting the wall 66 and cannot be advanced past the opening 20 since the curvilinear wall 68 is closely positioned adjacent the periphery of the wheel.
- the curvilinear wall 66 is spaced from the wheel periphery by a dimension just slightly greater than the tablet radius of curvature so that a tablet can be freely received therein without jamming. Likewise, a tablet that is only slightly smaller in size can be accommodated in the recesses of the wheel, although the recesses and first wall spacing are dimensionally controlled so that only a single tablet can be dispensed at a time from the container as the wheel is rotated.
- the second curvilinear wall is located closely adjacent the wheel periphery so that the tablet, if it does not freely fall from the opening, cannot advance past shoulder 72 (FIGURE 3) . This close spacing between the second wall 68 and the wheel periphery also discourages improper insertion of a tablet into the reservoir.
- a handle 76 (FIGURE 2) is affixed to the wheel externally of the container to allow for user initiated rotation of the wheel.
- a catch 80 extends into the rotational path of wheel.
- the catch 80 operates like a one-way clutch to allow rotation of the wheel in one direction only, i.e., counterclockwise as depicted by arrow 82 in FIGURE 1. while restricting rotation of the wheel in the opposite (clockwise) direction.
- the catch is preferably cantilever mounted to the container so that it serves the additional function of shaking or jogging the tablets upon rotation of the wheel. That is, the catch engages the trailing peripheral edge of a recess in the wheel and is deflected upwardly by continued rotation of the wheel.
- the mounting arm 84 of the catch allows limited upward movement as the catch rides along the periphery of the wheel (FIGURE 3) .
- FIGURES 4 and 5 illustrate other preferred arrangements for actuating the wheel rotation and dispensing individual tablets from the container.
- the handle has been replaced by a spring biased actuating member 100. It includes an enlarged handle portion 102 and an elongated stem 104 received through an opening 106 in the container. At an inner end of the stem is a shoulder 108 that cooperates with a series of cogs 110 fixed to the wheel. Each cog terminates in a face that is generally radially disposed from the axis of rotation of the wheel and, upon advancement of the ste in a direction parallel to the tangent of the wheel, the shoulder engages one of the cog faces and rotates the wheel in a counterclockwise direction, as shown. This urges the catch 80 from one of the recesses 62, as described above, until it snaps into place in the next adjacent recess. The actuating member is then returned to its position as shown in FIGURE 4 by spring 112 so that the process can be repeated to dispense another tablet.
- the catch 80 also prevents rotation of the wheel in the opposite direction, i.e., clockwise as shown. Specifically, the outer edge of the catch hooks under the lip of a recess in the wheel if rotation is attempted in the opposite direction. Inclined wall 52 abuts against wall 32 to impede any flexing or deflection of the catch in the opposite direction. Thus, a tablet cannot be inserted into the opening and be fed into the storage portion of the container, thereby further eliminating tamper concerns.
- FIGURE 5 is substantially identical to the arrangement of FIGURE 4 except that the actuating member extends outwardly from the bottom wall as opposed to the first sidewall. This allows a user to easily depress the actuating member by pushing the container toward a rigid surface 120, such as a table top, to rotate the wheel via the stem and cog arrangement. Still another preferred embodiment is shown in
- FIGURE 6 where the actuating member is similarly oriented to the embodiment of FIGURE 4.
- the handle 122 does not extend beyond the first sidewall. This limits the potential for inadvertent actuation and dispensing of a tablet.
- this arrangement may include a latch 124 that must be moved from a first position (as shown) to a second position (not shown) to allow the actuating member to be depressed. Thi ⁇ is but one type of latch feature incorporated into the actuating member that prevents inadvertent dispensing of a tablet.
- latch mechanisms and structural arrangements can be employed without departing from the scope and intent of the subject invention.
- a guide arm can be provided on the container 130 to cooperate with the inner end of the stem and assure that the shoulder remains in contact with the cog face of the wheel during actuation.
- the guide arm has a curvilinear configuration to urge the inner end of the stem toward the wheel axis and assure intimate contact between the shoulder and the cog face during advancement of the stem in the dispensing process.
- FIGURE 3 illustrates a screw-on cap 132 (FIGURE 3) to facilitate refill of the container.
- the cap can be fitted with a tape or other tamper-evident indicator that will easily show that the cap has been twisted or removed from the container. In this way, an end user or pharmacist, for example, can determine if the tablet container was refilled in an authorized manner.
- the wheel can be interchanged with other wheels having different sized external grooves to accommodate different sized tablets.
- FIGURES 7 and 8 illustrate a modified container in which a substitute wheel has been inserted having shallower recesses 62'.
- FIGS 7 and 8 also show a slidable cover 142 that can be used to selectively cover the opening 20.
- a handle 144 allows a user to easily slide the cover between open and closed positions if desired.
- FIGURE 9 illustrates how the reservoir size can be varied by simply altering the width or degree of taper of one of the walls of the container.
- the front wall illustrated on the left-hand side of FIGURE 9 can be spaced closer to or further from the rear wall of the container to enlarge or reduce the size of the container reservoir. In this way, containers having different capacities can be obtained without significantly altering the remaining components or the molds used to form the containers.
- the reservoir or storage compartment of the container serves as a holding area for storing tablets in random order.
- This storage compartment is wider (FIGURE 2) than the passageway.
- the tablets are arranged in a generally upright and planar order as they proceed through the passageway so that the tablets slide down individually and align in single formation between the sides of the container.
- the tablet flow regulator or wheel turns on its axis in one direction only as a result of actuation by a user.
- the wheel is grooved as defined by recesses 62 to receive a single tablet at a time as the wheel is rotated in the permitted direction.
- the first circumferential wall constrains the tablets until the recess is located over the opening and is dispensed.
