Definitions

  • This invention has particular application to internal and/or external repair or reinforcement of the corner of a cardboard box of generally rectangular shape, or the lid for such a box. Whilst it is envisaged that the invention will be primarily used for boxes as described above other applications will be come apparent from the following description.
  • both external and internal corner repair or reinforcement is extremely simple and effective. The result is not only a repair but a bracing of the three surfaces adjacent the repaired corner in a true right angled relationship.
  • the invention can be said to comprise a repair and/or reinforcement member which is a panel of at least semi-rigid sheet material with one surface coated with an adhesive material and the opposite surface uncoated, the panel is divided into two primary sub-panels and two secondary sub-panels by three fold lines and a cut through the panel, the three fold lines intersect to form a body and two arms of a "T" where the fold line representing the body of the "T" lies between the primary sub-panels, the fold lines representing the arms of the "T" respectively lie between a primary sub-panel and a secondary sub-panel and the cut separates adjacent edges of the two secondary sub-panels, said fold lines and said cut permit the reinforcement member to be folded to a configuration where one of said secondary sub-panels overlies the other of said secondary sub-panels and the overlapped secondary sub-panels and the primary sub-panels replicate the relationship of three surfaces at the corner of a rectangular box.

It will be seen that the fold lines 6 to 8 respectively form the body and arms of a "T" and that the cut 9 is aligned with the body of the "T".

This can be achieved by cutting though the cover sheet when the fold lines are formed in the panel 1. This allows the cover sheet portions to be removed from the sub-panels one at a time as required.

It can be formed from plastics material, for example, thin acrylic sheeting where the fold lines are crushed into the surface from both faces of the sheet or the fold lines could be formed by the application of heat to slightly reduce the thickness of the sheet thereby facilitating folding along the formed lines. More substantial repair/reinforcement members could be made from polypropylene, high density polyethylene (H.D.P.E.) with moulded or impressed fold lines facilitating the required orientation of the sub-panels.

  • the members proposed by this invention can be fitted as original elements of a box or lid and not only used for repair of damaged items. Where the members as so used they can be fitted to box body or lid blanks which need only to be creased and corner notched. When the sides are upfolded relative to the bottom of the box or the top of the lid along the crease lines the cut corners of each notch will lie adjacent each and they can be secured in working relationship by the member of the present invention. This would greatly simplify the construction of box lids in particular.
  • the members proposed by the invention can be mounted both internally and externally to the lid corner.
