  • Locking devices such as bolts can provide a convenient means of securing elements of an assembly together, for example where a piece of apparatus may be stored or transported disassembled, and assembled on site for use.
  • An example of an application of this kind is in the area of load transporting apparatus, such as pallets.
  • pallets are well known in the art and generally comprise a load carrying deck supported by structures such as legs between which the tines of a forklift may be inserted for movement of the pallet.
  • Pallets can be provided with demountable side walls which can be in a form known in the art as a "sleeve" , to form a container which can be provided with a lid for the transportation of for example loose articles. It is desirable for the sleeve to be held in place on the pallet by a secure mechanism to prevent the assembly coming apart in use , however it is also necessary for the attachment mechanism to be easy to operate in practice and cheap to manufacture. It has been found that locking devices existing in the art suffer from a number of disadvantages such as difficulty of operation, and a tendency to wear quickly resulting in accidental disassembly.
  • a locking device comprising a housing, a bolt moveable from a first position to a second position in the housing and detent means adapted to retain the bolt in each of the two positions.
  • the detent means may comprise complementary parts of the bolt and the housing, and the complementary parts may comprise a male part and a female part.
  • the bolt may comprise the male part and the housing may comprise the female part, or vice versa.
  • the male part may be adapted to flex, relative to the bolt, on operation of the device.
  • the male part comprises a substantially convex protuberance from the bolt or housing and it is further preferred that the female part comprises a substantially concave depression.
  • the female part comprises a substantially concave depression.
  • the bolt includes means to allow movement of the bolt by a user, and the movement means may comprise an aperture adapted for insertion of one or more digit of a user.

  • the bolt can be seen to comprise a generally rectangular, planar body part 5 having an enlarged head 6 at one end.
  • the head 6 has a generally oval shaped aperture 7 for insertion of a user's finger(s) /thumb in use.
  • the body part 5 has a male detent part 8 which, in the illustrated embodiment is a generally rectangular substantially convex protuberance, there being a smooth transition between the surface of the body- part 5 and of the surface of the male detent part 8. This helps to promote a smooth movement of the bolt 3 in the housing 2.
  • a corresponding male detent part 8 is also provided on the opposing surface of the bolt 3 (shown in Figs. 4 & 5) .
  • the bolt 3 is mounted in use in housing 2 as illustrated in Figure 4.
  • Housing 2 generally comprises upper and lower, in use, walls 9J0 which define a cavity 11 in which bolt 3 is received.
  • the cavity 11 is open through wall 10 to enable a user to operate the bolt 3 by inserting for example one or more digit in the oval aperture 7 as can be seen from Figure 2.
  • Upper wall 9 has a female detent part 12 in the form of a smooth concave depression. Adjacent the female detent part 12 the upper wall 9 has a rectangular aperture 13 which opens onto a groove 14.
  • the groove 14 is adapted to receive the lower, in use, edge of a sleeve 15 ( Figure 5) and may extend around the entire periphery of the pallet 16.
  • the sleeve 15 is provided with an aperture 17 which is arranged to be substantially aligned in use with aperture 13.
  • the user's digit, or a tool is inserted through the oval aperture 7. Pressure is then applied to slide the bolt 3 in the cavity 11 in the direction of groove 14.
  • the male detent parts 8 are forced into a neck 18 of the cavity 11 thereby forcing walls 9 and 10 slightly apart by virtue of the resilience of the material from which they are formed. This is facilitated by the smooth shape of the male detent parts 8, and also the smooth transition between cavity 11 and neck 18. It will be noted in this embodiment that at a mouth 19 of the neck 18, walls 9, 10 perform the function of a female detent part 12 when the bolt is in the unlocked position, the narrowing of the cavity 11 at the neck 18 preventing the bolt from accidental movement into the engaged position.
  • FIG. 7a to 7d there is illustrated a second embodiment in which the male detent parts 8 of the bolt 3 are modified.
  • the male detent parts 8 are borne on an extension 21 of the surface of the body part 5, which extends into a rectangular aperture 20 in the body parts.
  • the extension is hingeable/bendable about its attachment point to the body part 5, allowing it to flex as it passes through the female part 12, resulting in a smoother and more consistent action. It has also been found that this configuration is particularly convenient and less expensive to mould, when the bolt 3 is formed as by moulding.
  • the locking device of the invention provides a simple and effective locking system which has a positive locking and unlocking action by virtue of the detent means 4 and is relatively easy to operate in practice by virtue of the configuration of the bolts 3 and oval aperture 7.

Cette invention concerne un dispositif de verrouillage (1), se composant d'un boîtier (2), d'un verrou (3) pouvant être déplacée d'une première à une seconde position à l'intérieur du boîtier (2), ainsi qu'un élément d'arrêt (4) qui retient le verrou (3) dans l'une ou l'autre des positions. Ce dispositif (1) peut être utilisé pour des palettes de transport de marchandises afin de solidariser, tout en étant amovible, des parois latérales démontables les unes avec les autres.
