Das besondere Merkmal von „tailored blanks" ist der Stufeπsprung im Bereich der Verbindungsnaht der beiden Bleche. Wegen dieser sichtbaren Verbindungsnaht und wegen des Stufensprungs werden „tailored blanks" vorwiegend bei Karosserieteilen eingesetzt. Für den Einsatz von „tailored blanks" ist es wichtig, in welcher Richtung der Stufensprung nach der Blechumformung liegt. Weist der Stufensprung nach außen, so kann es vorkommen, daß sich die Naht nach der Verbindung mit dem Außenblech auf diesem abzeichnet, z. B. beim Falzen oder Bördeln. In solchen Fällen sind „tailored blanks" bei den in der Automobilbranche geltenden Qualitätsansprüchen nicht mehr verwendbar. Allerdings gibt es auch Anwendungsfälle, bei denen dies nicht relevant ist, da das Außenblech in diesen Bereichen durch Dichtungen, Verblendungen usw. abgedeckt wird. Ist eine derartige Abdeckung nicht vorgesehen, so muß der Stufensprung nach der Blechumformung auf jeden Fall nach innen zeigen. In diesem Falle ergeben sich jedoch Dichtprobleme, da im Bereich des Stufensprungs die notwendigen Dichtungen zum Schutz vor Staub, Wasser und Luft nicht vollständig anliegen. Aufgrund des so geschaffenen gleichförmigen Überganges liegen auch die Dichtungen später in diesem Bereich vollständig an der Blechkontur an.
