  • the objects of this invention have been achieved by providing a coaxial connector comprising an inner conductor and an outer conductor concentrically surrounding the inner conductor and separated therefrom by a dielectric housing, the outer conductor stamped and formed from sheet metal and integral with printed circuit board (PCB) connection portions for electrical connection to a printed circuit board, and also integral with retention sections for secure fixing of the dielectric housing thereto.
  • the inner conductor could be made of a single part and press-fitted into a corresponding cavity of the dielectric housing, whereby a tail portion of the central conductor is solderable to the PCB for electrical connection thereto.

  • the contact section 20 surrounds the pin contact section 14 in a concentric manner and extends from the attachment section 18 to a forward end 22 which is flared outwardly and extends slightly beyond the forward end 23 of the inner conductor.
  • the outer contact section 20 comprises slots 24 extending axially rearwards from the forward end 22. The slots 24 serve to increase radial flexibility of the contact section when receiving a complementary coaxial conductor therein.
  • the outer conductor comprises a seam 26 that is formed by the folding together of the sheet metal, where ends meet at the seam 26.
  • the attachment section 18 comprises extensions 28 extending axially rearwards from the contact section 20, whereby the outer conductor is a substantially symmetrical member about a central plane 30.
  • the attachment sections 18 have lower edges 32 substantially parallel to the axial direction and positioned proximate the centre axis 33 of the contact section 20 when viewing the side view as shown in Figure 6. From the lower edge 32 extend surface mount contact legs 34, the contact legs 34 for mounting and soldering to circuit traces of a printed circuit board 36 (shown in phantom lines in Figure 6) .
  • the attachment extensions 28 further comprise resilient outwardly biased locking lances 38 that engage behind a rear surface 40 of the dielectric housing for retention of the housing 8 to the outer contact 6.
  • the dielectric housing 8 comprises a central cavity 42 for receiving the mounting portion 12 of the inner contact in an interference fit therein, this interference fit providing the retention means of the inner contact to the dielectric housing when being assembled thereto.
  • the dielectric housing 8 has a substantially cylindrical shape mounting portion 44 surrounding the central cavity 42 for mounting in a rear portion 43 of the outer contact section 20. Extending axially rearwards therefrom is a mounting section 46 that provides an upper support for the inner contact connection section 10, and a support for the outer contact extensions 28.
  • the extensions 28 are received within a slot 45 (see Figure 10) for secure, stable support thereof.
  • the mounting section 46 further comprises a slot 48 formed by an upper portion 50 of the housing that lies over the forward cylindrical portion 44 for receiving a portion of the outer contact 20 therein.
  • the latter ensures a more robust assembly of the outer contact to the dielectric housing 46 whereby the slot 48 may be provided in an interference fit with the portion 52 of outer contact inserted therein.
  • the slots 48 and 45 provide a means for reducing expansion of the seam 26, and ensuring a more robust construction. Assembly of the coaxial connector 2 is thus achieved in a relatively simple manner by urging the inner contact 4 into the dielectric housing cavity 42, and then urging the outer contact axially over the dielectric housing cylindrical portion 44 until the locking lances 38 engage with the rear face 40 of the housing.
  • the coaxial connector is then positionable on a PCB, for example by use of a vacuum suction pipette positioned on an upper surface 60 of the dielectric housing to transport the connector 2 on the edge of the PCB 36, and subsequently soldering the legs 34 and inner conductor connection section 10 to circuit traces of the PCB.
  • the inner conductor connection section 10 is shown flattened, but could also be provided in a cylindrical shape (the inner conductor thus only requiring screw machining) , where the lower surface 11 is at the same level as that of the contact legs 34 so that it lies directly on the PCB for soldering directly thereto.
  • the latter makes the inner contact very cost-effective.
  • the single part dielectric housing, stamped and formed outer contact with printed circuit board connection sections integral therewith, and integral inner contact is very cost-effective due to the low number of parts and easy assembly procedure.

Abstract

L'invention concerne un connecteur coaxial (2) comportant un contact intérieur (4), un boîtier diélectrique (8) et un contact extérieur monobloc matricé (6). Ce dernier comprend une section de contact concentrique antérieure (20) qui est solidaire de prolongements (18) permettant la fixation du contact extérieur au boîtier diélectrique. Ces prolongements (18) sont égalements solidaires de branches de contact (34) pour montage en surface. Le nombre limité de pièces et la simplicité de leur montage rendent cette configuration très simple et peu onéreuse.
