Abstract
A description is provided of the utilization of hempseed oil as a skin-care additive in the manufacture of various cosmetic products. The pure, natural oil used in the preparations, which is readily available as a low-priced and 'replenishable' raw material, develops excellent skin-care properties and this appears to make its use in cosmetic products particularly advantageous.
Description
Cosmetic product contai ni ng hempseed oi l and method for manufacturing the same
The present invention relates to a cosmetic product and a method of manufacturing the same.
Cosmetic products are generally used for the care of the human body, especially for the treatment of the skin and hear. Many conventional cosmetic products however fail to give the skin and hear the care and nutrition they need. It is therefore an object of the invention to provide for a cosmetic product, particularly a body care product, with improved nutritious properties.
To this end a cosmetic product is, according to the invention, characterized in that it comprises hempseed oil as a nutritive substance. A method manufacturing such a cosmetic product is, according to the invention, characterized in that hempseed oil is added as a nutritive substance.
The fatty oil of the fruit (seeds) of hemp (Cannabis Sativa), one of the oldest plants cultivated by mankind, is characterized by a particularly high content of poly- unsaturated fatty acids. In the past it was used as an edible oil as well as raw material in the production of paints and varnishes.
In the field of cosmetics no indication exists regarding the use of hempseed oil as a nutritive substance in cosmetic products and other applications of hempseed oil have largely been discontinued due to a reduction in hemp cultivation and the use of newer raw materials.
Present-day tests, underlying the present invention, have however indicated that the addition of cold-pressed hempseed oil in cosmetic products provides excellent nutritive benefits.
Especially noticeable are the effects on skin and hair. The skin becomes particular¬ ly soft and smooth; in addition, the hair feels light and has a beautiful sheen.
The results revealed that in this respect hempseed oil is superior to most other known nutritive additives.
Its use in cosmetics is important from an economical as well as environment- related viewpoint, since hempseed oil is readily available as low-priced and, in particular, entirely natural, 'replenishable' raw material.
By combining it with other cosmetic nutritive substances and active ingredients, additional interesting effects can be achieved. This way, the nutritive effect of quaternary active ingredients in hair-care products is clearly strengthened. The amount of hempseed oil used varies from 0.2 to 60 per cent, depending on the cosmetic product.
To ensure the optimum distribution and processing during production, the hemp¬ seed oil is added, for practical purposes, during either the fat or emulsifying phase and the latter is then worked into the remaining product or further processed as usual.
To avoid thermal changes, excessive and extended heating of the mixture during processing should be avoided as much as possible.
To prevent oxidative changes, the products are compounded with antioxidants, which are commercially available for this purpose.
Prior to pressing, the hempseeds used are thoroughly cleaned and shelled by means of mechanical processes such as sifting or washing, in order to avoid contamination of the added oil with cannabinoids. Moreover, it is possible to utilize hemp species which do not form any psychoactive cannabinoids.
The following cosmetic products are made with the addition of hempseed oil: hair shampoo, hair conditioner, hair balm, hair spray, shower gel, oil bath, bubble bath, neutral liquid soap, normal and non-alkaline soap bars, lip balm, facial masks,
cleansing milk, skin-care gel, body lotion, skin cream, massage cream, massage oil and body oil.
