- the part 2 and associated parts may replace a door lock of a vehicle, as shown in Figures 3 and 4.
- the part 2 is provided within a casing 80 which is secured to a door 82 of the vehicle.
- the casing 80 includes three channels 84 in each of which a respective one of the hexagonal discs 18 fits.
- the discs 18 are rotatable within the channels but are restricted thereby from moving axially.
- the casing 80 includes windows 86 through which one face of each disc 18 is visible.
- the casing is arranged so that the discs 18 may be rotated so that a selected numerical combination is visible within the windows.
- the part 2 and casing 80 are secured to the door 82 of the vehicle so that the locking bolt 10 of the part 2 may be releasably secured within a bolt socket 88 provided on the frame 90 of the door.
- a master switch (not shown) is provided adjacent to the casing 80 opposite end 30 of shaft section 9.
- the master switch is arranged to be actuated by axial movement of the shaft 40.
- the master switch is arranged to be in an "on” position when the bolt 10 is not engaged within the bolt socket 88 and to be in an “off” position when the bolt 10 is within the bolt socket 88.
- When in an "off” position the master switch deactivates a solenoid located behind the vehicle's main fuse box thereby to block the passage of current to the main fuse box and, therefore, to the fused circuits of the vehicle.
- the position of the aforementioned solenoid behind the vehicle's main fuse box is such as to render the solenoid substantially inaccessible thereby to stop any unauthorised tampering with the solenoid.
- the fuses within the fuse box are located on the inside face of the lid of the box so that if the lid is removed, all of the fuses are removed. This makes tampering with the electrical circuits of the vehicle difficult.
- the security device operates as follows. A vehicle which includes the security device as described above is locked by an operator selecting a predetermined "correct" numerical combination. When the correct combination has been selected, the openings 16 in the discs 18 are axially aligned. Then, using the handle 24, the operator urges the shaft 40 leftwardly so that it is disposed in the position shown in Figure 2 wherein the splines 14 have passed from one side of the discs 16 to the opposite side. When so disposed, the bolt 10 is positioned within the bolt socket 88. The discs 18 are then randomly rotated so that the respective openings 16 therein become non-aligned. It will be appreciated that now the shaft 40 cannot be moved rightwardly without reselecting the correct numerical combination.
- the bolt 40 remains securely positioned within the bolt socket 88 and, therefore, the door 82 of the vehicle remains securely closed until the shaft can again be moved rightwardly.
- the master switch is in an "off" position and, accordingly, the flow of current to the aforementioned main fuse box and the fused circuits is blocked.
- the operator selects the correct numerical combination so that the openings 16 in the discs 18 are axially aligned. Then, using the handle 24, the shaft 40 is moved rightwardly from the position shown in Figure 2 to a position wherein the splines 14 have passed from the left hand side of the discs 18 to the right hand side thereof. At the end of this movement, end 30 of shaft section 9 contacts the master switch which is switched to its "on" position. Accordingly, current is allowed to flow to the main fuse box and the fused circuits and, therefore, the engine of the vehicle may be started and the vehicle driven in the usual manner.
- FIG. 3 One means for locking the vehicle's handbrake is shown in Figure 3.
- a handbrake cable 50 which carries a box-shaped member 52 having a slot 54 therein.
- the member 52 is arranged to be slidably received within a sleeve 56 which is secured to the vehicle's chassis and has a slot 58 therein.
- a solenoid device 60 includes a movable locking member 62 therein.
- the locking member 62 When current flows to the solenoid device 60, the locking member 62 is automatically raised and, therefore, disengaged from slots 54, 58. In this case, the handbrake can be released. If, however, an attempt is made to steal the vehicle, for example, by sawing through bolt 10, the vehicle's door may be opened. Nonetheless, since no current is allowed to flow to the solenoid device 60, the locking member 62 remains within aligned slots 54, 58 and, therefore, the handbrake cannot be released. The vehicle's doors, bonnet and boot may be locked in a similar manner.
- the discs 18 may be removed by an authorised person by unscrewing the appropriate shaft sections 4, 6, 8.
- the "correct” numerical combination may then be changed by replacing the removed discs with new discs in which internal splines 70 of openings 16 extend towards a differently numbered face than in the removed discs.
- the security device described may provide a simple, yet effective means of protecting a vehicle against theft, by immobilising the vehicle. Furthermore, in the embodiment described, no key is required to operate the door locks of the vehicle, since the door lock is operated by selecting the correct numeral sequence.
- the device may have more general applications, for example, as a security device for the doors of buildings or for safes.
