Definitions

  • This invention relates to a handling device for particulate material, and more particularly, but not solely to handling device for expanded plastics particles.
  • Expanded plastics particles are often used as packing material for supporting objects inside boxes or cartons. This so-called loose fill foam packing is very light in weight and thus awkward to handle.
  • US 5 096 337 discloses a device for handling loose fill foam packing which comprises an elongate duct attached at one end to a collection bag and a fan for inducing an air flow along the duct.
  • the inlet to the duct is angled towards the ground so that in use any foam particles on the floor can be drawn by suction into the duct and delivered into the bag for collection.
  • the shape and angle of the inlet to the duct makes the device unsuitable for removing the foam particles directly from boxes or cartons during unpacking of the objects being shipped.
  • the collection bag makes the device awkward to handle. The device does not solve the problem of handling the foam packing during packing of the boxes or cartons, as it is only intended to be used to collect the particles in a bag.
  • a handling device for particulate material which comprises an elongate duct having flexible inlet and outlet portions at its respective opposite ends, and fan means for inducing a flow of air along the duct.
  • the flexible inlet portion of the duct is placed in or adjacent the particulate material to be handled, and the opposite outlet portion placed in or adjacent the desired destination of the material.
  • the fan means is actuated to draw the particles into the duct and deliver them to the desired destination. If the user wants to carefully fill a receptacle with the material, then he can hold onto the flexible outlet portion of the duct and direct the stream of particles emerging from the duct to where he wants. Alternatively, if he wants to carefully empty a receptacle of the particles, then he can hold onto the flexible inlet portion of the duct in order to draw the particles into the duct from where he wants.
  • control means are provided on or adjacent an end of the duct for controlling air flow along the duct, so that the flow of particles can be halted or adjusted by the user whilst he is holding on to the end of the duct.
  • control means is provided on a detachable hand-grip which can be fitted to either end of the duct.
  • the emerging stream of air does not create a draft which disturbs the particles which have already been handled.
  • the cross-sectional area of the free end of the outlet portion of the duct is greater than its cross- sectional area along a substantial part of its length: this has the effect of reducing the velocity of the air flow as it emerges from the duct.
  • the fan means communicates with a central portion of the elongate duct by means of a passage which converges with the duct towards the outlet portion, thereby creating a venturi effect which creates suction at the inlet portion of the duct. This arrangement has the advantage over the known device that the fan means does not obstruct the air flow along the duct, thereby rendering the device less susceptible to blocking.
  • the fan means comprises an electric fan mounted in a housing which incorporates the central portion of the duct, the inlet and outlet portions of the duct being connected to the opposite ends of the central portion respectively.

  • the fan is switched on to cause an air flow along the outlet tube 14: this causes suction in the inlet tube 13 owing to the venturi effect of the air flow.
  • the suction draws the loose fill foam particles along the inlet tube 13 , through the duct 22 in the fan assembly and along the outlet tube 14.
  • the user is able to direct the stream of particles emerging from the outlet tube by holding onto the hand-grip on the end of the tube. Thus, he can carefully fill the spaces in a box around objects to be shipped with the loose fill foam packing particles.
  • the air emerging from the end of the tube disperses through the apertures 19 and out of the flared nozzle 21.
  • This has the effect of reducing the velocity of the air, so that the particles which have already been packed around the objects are not blown by the air.
  • the user is able to stop or reduce the flow of particles by using the lever to close or partially close the valve inside the hand-grip: the fan continues to run whilst the valve is shut, but loading of the fan is avoided as the air is able to flow out of the inlet tube 13 instead; alternatively the control lever may be arranged to alter the speed of the fan.
  • the user wants to unpack the particles from around the objects which have been shipped, he needs to disconnect the hand-grip from the outlet tube 14 and attach it to the inlet tube 13. He can then carefully direct the stream of air entering the tube exactly where he wants, in order to remove the particles. He can also stop the flow of particles by using the lever to control the valve inside the hand-grip.
  • An alternative nozzle (not shown) having a smaller opening may be fitted to the end of the hand-grip when using the device for unpacking.
