Definitions
- the present invention relates to a device for pic ⁇ ture display, and more specifically to a device according to the preamble of appended claim 1.
- One concept means that the pictures are arranged in special files, which are moved in a closed path, includ ⁇ ing a display run and a waiting run.
- a file When a file is to be conveyed along the display run, it is hooked on to a con ⁇ veyor, often being a chain, which is in constant motion and which moves the file through the display run and back to the waiting run, where the file is unhooked.
- the file is conveyed by another conveyor through the waiting run.
- This concept is quite complicated and requires seve ⁇ ral conveyors and several motors, or one motor and seve ⁇ ral gears.
- Another concept is to arrange the pictures in pockets on a web.
- the web with the pictures is wound on a first reel.
- the web When displaying the pictures, the web is unwound from the first reel and wound on a second reel, the pictures passing through a display run.
- the web To be able to how the pictures again, the web must either be reversed or first be rewound at a high speed on the first reel and then be displayed by again winding the web on the second reel.
- This constructional concept also yields a device having poor flexibility and permitting, in actual prac ⁇ tice, the use of one picture size only. Furthermore, changing pictures is time-consuming. Also, it is not possible to display pictures in more than one direction at a time.
- the object of the invention is to provide a device for picture display which essentially overcomes the problems inherent in the prior art.
- the device according to the invention is thus char ⁇ acterised in that the pictures move along an endless path.
- the carrier defining this path has the advantage that the pictures are always facing outwards.
- the device can advantageously be used for the simultaneous display of different pictures in two directions.
- the fastening means enable quick and extremely simple picture changes.
- the above-mentioned type of carrier tends to move or "travel" along the reels or rollers, i.e. in the axial direction thereof. Such a movement is advantageously pre ⁇ vented with the aid of the flange, or the flanges accord ⁇ ing to one embodiment of the invention.
- Another embodiment of the device according to the invention is characterised in that at least one of the rollers is resiliently biased with a certain force for stretching the web.
- Yet another embodiment of the invention is charac- terised in that the drive means comprises six rollers which are arranged in two groups with three rollers in each group, the three rollers of each group forming the corners of a triangle, the web passing alternatingly on one and the other side of the three rollers so as to form two legs of the triangle, and that at least one of the rollers is driven for moving the web in an endless path.
- This embodiment is advantageous in that the surfaces between the roller groups can be used for displaying dif ⁇ ferent pictures, while other pictures are concealed on those parts of the web which form the legs of the tri ⁇ angles. Concealed pictures can be moved up to display position at a given time interval.
- Fig. 1 shows a device for picture display accord ⁇ ing to one embodiment of the invention.
- Fig. 2 shows an end piece forming part of the device.
- Fig. 3 is a cross-section of an advertising sign, in which the device according to the invention is used.
- Fig. 1 shows a preferred embodiment of a device according to the invention.
- the device may form the interior of an advertising sign, as in Fig. 3.
- the device substantially comprises two main parts, a car ⁇ rier, on which the pictures are attached, and a drive means, on which the carrier is mounted.
- the carrier forms an endless web 3 having an outer side 4 and an inner side 5, as well as Velcro®-type fastening means 8 arranged on the outer side 4 of the web 3 for releasable connection with complementary fastening means (not shown) arranged on the pictures.
- the web 3 is made from an opalizing fabric, whereby light coming from a spot-light source 34, 35 disposed inside the web 3 is evenly spread across the entire surface of the pictures.
- the web 3 is reinforced in an edge portion 6 at each of the side edges 7 of the web.
- the fastening means 8 consist of Velcro® strips made up of two pieces, one having loops and the other having hooks. More specifically, the piece with the loops is arranged on the web 3 and the piece with the hooks is thus arranged on the pictures.
- the Velcro® strips 8 may have any optional design, e.g. be of optional length and width, or have a circular or elliptic shape. Moreover, they may be placed on optional portions of the web 3, for example along the side edges of the web, transversely of the web, obliquely across the web, in certain spots on the web etc. As opposed to the prior art, this choice of fastening means 8 enables very simple and quick handling of the pictures for changing them.
- the Velcro® strips 8 By disposing the Velcro® strips 8 in a certain pattern of squares, as shown in the Figure, it becomes possible to use the same web 3 for displaying different-sized pictures.
- the Velcro® strips can be arranged such that one portion of the web 3 can be used for displaying an Al-size picture, two A2-size pictures or four A3-size pictures. This gives high flexibility.
- the whole web 3 can be replaced by a web 3 with Velcro® strips of another configuration.
- the drive means which is especially adapted to the carrier 1 of the invention, is made up of rollers 9, over which the web 3 passes.
- the drive means comprises six rollers 9 which are arranged in two groups with three rollers 9 in each group.
- the rol ⁇ lers 9 of each group are not contained in the same plane but form the corners of a triangle.
- the web 3 passes alternatingly on one and the other side of the three rol- lers 9, such that the inner side 5 of the web 3 engages two of the rollers 9 and the outer side 4 of the web 3 engages the third roller 9.
- the web 3 forms two legs 10, 11 of the triangle.
- the angle between the two legs 10, 11 is considerably smaller than shown in the Figure, where it has been exaggerated for reasons of clarity.
- the device will have a relatively small width, which is advantageous when using it in an advertising sign.
- two opposite vertical portions 12, 13 of the web 3 are exposed for displaying the pic ⁇ tures on them.
- the portions of the web 3 forming the two legs 10, 11, as well as the corresponding legs of the triangle formed by the other group of rollers, are at the same time concealed.
- Two of the rollers 9 are driven by a motor (not shown) for feeding the web 3 in an endless path for picture change by advancing the pictures on the concealed portions 10, 11.
- each roller comprises a main cylinder and two end pieces 2 connected thereto.
- Each end piece 20, see Fig. 2 has a cylindrical engagement portion 21, which, for mounting the end piece, is in ⁇ serted in the main cylinder.
- the engagement portion 21 is manufactured with tight fit so as to obviate the need of adhesive to achieve a solid connection between the engagement portion 21 and the inner surface of the main cylinder.
- the engagement portion 21 may be slightly coned or be provided with elongate projections 22.
- the end piece 20 has a circumferential flange 23, whose surface 24 facing the main cylinder engages the end surface thereof and has a slightly larger diameter than the main cylinder.
- the end pieces 20 of the rollers 9 guide the web 3 so as to prevent it from travelling outside the circumferen ⁇ tial surface of the main cylinder, the flanges 23 pre ⁇ venting this by the lateral surfaces 24 thereof acting on the side edges 7 of the web 3. Since this results in wear to the web, the reinforcement thereof in the edge por ⁇ tions 6 gives a considerable increase of the life of the web 3.
- the rollers 9 might be made as a single piece, but the design of the roller as a main cylinder with detachably arranged end pieces 20 facilitates the manufacture considerably and involves significantly lower costs and, moreover, makes it possible to replace the flanges 23, which are worn as time goes on, in a simple and inexpensive way.
- Fig. 3 shows a sign in which the device according to the invention is used.
- the sign 30- is basically made up of two transparent panels 31, 32, which are mounted in a dividable rectangular frame 33.
- the panels 31, 32 are arranged at a certain distance from each other and form, together with the frame 33, a space in which the above- mentioned device for picture display is arranged.
- the space also accommodates lighting, such as two fluorescent lamps 34, 35.
- the lamps 34, 35 illuminate the back of the web 3, such that the parts 12, 13 of the web 3 that are exposed to an observer through the panels 31, 32 are illuminated.
- the cross-sectional view is a horizontal section, i.e. the rollers 9 are arranged vertically, but they may of course instead be arranged horizontally.
