10 Claims, 9 Drawing Figures PATENIEL :mvzs 1974 saw snr 3 DYNAMIC ADVERTISING DISPLAY SYSTEM more particularly to an improved dynamic display system for exhibiting advertising signs.
In the field of advertising, the use of eye-catching signs is recognized as an effective way to convey information and to promote products. Typically, the advertising signs are artistically created and placed in strategic locations within a store, supermarket or the like, to be seen by as many persons as possible. The effectiveness of such advertising displays is increased by making the displays move, thereby to more readily attract attention.
An example of the dynamic display system, the general type to which the present invention relates, is shown in US. Pat. No. 3,735,513 granted May 29, 1973. In devices of this type, advertising signs are sequentially extracted from a magazine and moved in series along a path to an opposing magazine or returned to the same magazine for re-display. The magazine is provided with a discharge station where the sign is engaged with a drive means for travel along a track which defines the display path, and a receiving station where a sign is, disengaged from the drive means. Within the magazines the signs not being displayed are stored in a stack and a cam-actuated pusher frame is provided to move the signs laterally through the magazine from the receiving station to the discharge station for recirculation along the dislay path. Display systems of this type are relatively noisy due to the machanism required for shifting the signs in the stack and these systems can be difficult and expensive to maintain.
The present invention represents a substantial improvement over prior art dynamic display systems in that in operation it is quiet and mechanically reliable. The device is more economical to manufacture and maintain than dynamic display systems of the prior art.
Other features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the accompany ing drawings, which illustrate, by way of example, the principles of the invention.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention provides an improved dynamic advertising display system wherein a large number of advertising signs can be sequentially displayed. The signs are stored in a magazine while not being displayed and improved means for automatically shifting the signs from a stored position to a position for engagement with a drive mechanism for travel along a display path are provided.
More-specifically, the magazine is provided with a discharge station and a receiving station. A track extends from the discharge station, along the desired path of display to the receiving station. The receiving and discharge stations are spaced on opposite sides of the magazine and a sign storage area is interposed between the stations. In the presently preferred embodiment, a pair of spaced apart tracks extend laterally between the receiving station and the discharge station of the magazine for movably carrying the signs in the sign storage area. The lateral tracks communicate with the display track so that a continuous path is provided for signs leaving the display track at the receiving station, moving across the sign storage area and entering the display track at the discharge station. Each display sign, which is preferably designed to depend downwardly from the display track, is provided with a camming surface along the edge adjacent the display track. The camming surface of a sign entering the receiving station contacts a corresponding camming surface of a sign in the receiving station to urge that sign out of the receiving station and into the sign storage area. A corresponding lateral movement of the signs in the storage area occurs and responsive to this movement, a sign is moved out of the storage area into the discharge station for eventual engagement with the drive means for movement along the display track.
In addition to the camming surface, each sign carries a pair of upstanding posts and casters for contact with the drive means and for movably supporting the sign along the display path and the lateral tracks in the sign storage area.
Further features of the present invention reside in the drive mechanism which is adapted for engaging the upstanding posts for movement along the display path; in the configuration of the display track; and in the mechanism in the magazine for causing engagement and disengagement of the drive mechanism and the signs.
Other features and advantages of the display system of this invention will become apparent from the following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate by way of example, the principles of the invention. I

Such a system may be suspended from the ceiling in a supermarket, department store, or the like to present a repeating series of advertising messages in a conspicuous manner to customers in the store.
The system may be operated with two magazines, one at each end of a pair of display paths, although in the preferred embodiment it is preferred to employ a single magazine 11 and a continuous display path 12. The magazine 11 is provided with a discharge station 13 from which the panels leave the magazine for display and a receiving station 14 in to which the panels 10 are moved after completing a circuit of the display path 12. Between the discharge station 13 and the receiving station 14 is a panel storage area 15 in which the panels 10 are movably stored prior to re-display.
The system also includes drive means for moving the panels 10 from the discharge station, along the display path 12 and for depositing the panels 10 in the receiving station 14. The panels 10, are automatically laterally shifted from the receiving station 14 into the panel storage area 15 and the panels 10 in the panel storage area 15 are laterally displaced causing a panel to be moved into the discharge station 13 responsive to the movement of a panel into the receiving station 14.
As is more specifically shown in FIGS. 1 and 4, the magazine 11 is a generally boxlike container of sufficient horizontal and vertical dimension to accommodate the panels 10 therein. The magazine 11 comprises an upper frame 16 which includes, an open ended U- shape channel 17 with its open ends in abutment with track sections 18 which are in communication with the display path 12. A pair of side panels 19, a rear panel, not shown, and a front panel 20 are affixed to the upper frame 16 by mounting brackets, not shown, to define the interior of the magazine 11, which comprises three areas, the discharge station 13, the panel storage area 15 and the receiving station 14. The front panel 20 is provided with a pair of vertically elongated, spaced apart slots 21 which are aligned with and define the exit of the discharge station 13 and the entrance to the receiving station 14.
A pair of spaced apart open ended tubular lateral tracks 22 are carried between track sections 18 for communication therewith. A longitudinal slot 23 extends along the bottom wall of each of the lateral tracks 22.
The magazine 11 is suspended from a ceiling, not shown, by suitable hangers 24.
The display path 12, is defined by an elongated tubular track 25 of rectangular cross-sectional configuration, having a discharge leg 26, a U-shaped leg 27 and a receiving leg 28 defining a continuous display path extending away from and returning to the magazine 11. The open ends of the track 25 at the discharge leg 26 and the receiving leg 28 abut against the open ends of the track sections 18 of the upper frame 16 for communication therebetween and are held in abutment by a member 29 comprising a channel 30 extending between the track legs and carrying a clamp 31 on each end for containing and clamping the ends of the track 25 and the open ends of the track sections 18.
As is more specifically shown in FIGS. 2, 6, 7 and 8, the interiors of the track 25, and the track sections 18, are separated in to an upper chamber 32 and a lower chamber 33 by opposed inwardly extending flanges 34 whose inner edges define an upper slot 35 and whose upper surfaces define upper roller support surfaces 36. The bottom wall of the track 25 and the track sections 18 is provided with a longitudinal lower slot 37 and the inner surfaces of the bottom wall define lower roller support surfaces 38. A side wall of each of the track sections 18 is additionally provided with a pair of openings 39 which are aligned with the ends of the lateral tracks 22 and an arcuate slot 40 adjacent each of the openings 39 which extends from the lower slot 37 and communicates with the longitudinal slot 23 of the lateral track 22 for lateral movement of a panel out of the receiving station 14, across the panel storage area 15 and into the discharge station 13.
As is more specifically shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, a spaced apart pair of upstanding flanges 41, each having an inwardly turned lip 42, define a longitudinally running mounting channel extending along the upper surface of the track 25. Braces 43 extending between the receiving leg 28 and discharge leg 26 of the track 25 are affixed to the track 25 at the flanges 41 by a bolt 44 and a nut 45 for carrying the track while suspended from a ceiling by connection with the hangers 24 through a hook 46 and an eye bolt 47 carried by the brace 43.
For ease of shipping and the like, the receiving leg 28 and discharge leg 26 are comprised of an assembly of track sections. Assembly of the sections is facilitated by a spaced apart parallel running grooves 48 extending longitudinally along the bottom wall of the track 25. During assembly guide pins, not shown, are inserted in each of the grooves 48 at the point of abutment of the ends of the track sections to insure alignment of the upper slot 35 and lower slot 37 and alignment of the upper support surfaces 36 and the lower support surfaces 38 between sections. The sections are held together by brackets 49 overlying the abutting ends of the track sections and bolted to the flanges 41.
As best seen in FIGS. 2 and 5, each panel 10 is of generally rectangular configuration having a leading edge 50 in the direction of travel, a trailing edge 51 and a horizontally disposed upper edge 52. The panel 10 is carried at its upper edge 52 by an open ended tubular carrier 54 which is provided with a longitudinally running slot 55 in its bottom wall through which the panel 10 extends. The ends of the carrier 54 are substantially coterminous with the leading edge 50 and trailing edge 51 of the panel 10. A pair of spaced apart upstanding posts 56 are fixed on the upper surface of the carrier 54 for extension through the lower slot 37 of the track 25. The spacing between the posts 56 is equal to the spacing between the slots 23 of the lateral tracks 22 for alignment therewith in the receiving station 14. A support caster assembly 57 is joumaled on the portion of each of the posts 56 extending through the slot of the track section 18 and the slot 23 of the lateral tracks 22 for movably supporting the carrier 54 along the lower rolling support surfaces 38 of the track 25 and track sections 18 and the lateral tracks 22. The upper end of the post 56 extends above the caster assembly 57 and is enlarged at 58 to retain the caster assembly 57 on the post 56. The caster assembly 57 is free to pivot about the post 56 on an axis normal to the axis of the rollers 59 of the caster assembly 57.
A camming cap 60 is affixed to each end of the carrier 54 for extension beyond the leading and trailing edges, 50 and 51, of the panel 10. Each camming cap 60 is of substantially right triangular configuration with the base in abutment with the end of the carrier 54 and the hypotenuse defining a camming surface 61. The camming surface 61 of the camming cap 60 adjacent the leading edge 50 is faced inwardly in the direction of the interior of the magazine 11 and the camming surface 61 0f the camming cap 60 adjacent the trailing edge 51 of the panel is oppositely disposed.
As is most clearly seen in FIG. 4a, the camming surface 61 of the extending camming cap 60 of the carrier 54 entering the receiving station 14 contacts the camming surface 61 of the camming cap 60 on the trailing end of the carrier 54' which has been previously deposited therein. Responsive to the movement of the carrier 54 entering the receiving section 14, the camming surfaces 61 and 61 cooperate to impart a lateral movement to the carrier 54 urging the posts 56 of the carrier 54 out of the lower slot 37 through the arcuate slot 40 in to the slot 23 of the lateral tracks 22. The lateral ing station 14 and into the panel storage area 14 of magazine 11 causes a corresponding lateral movement of each of the carriers 54 and panels 10 in the panel storage area 15 and causes the carrier 54 adjacent the discharge station 13 to be moved in a path defined by the arcuate slots 40 (FIG. 8) so that the posts 56 of the carrier 54" are in substantial alignment with the lower slot 37 of the track section 18 for engagement with the drive means and for travel along the display path 12. The caster assemblies 57 are swiveled for travel of the rollers 59" along the lower roller support surface 38 of the track section 18 and track 25.
The panels 10 are moved along the display path 12 by the drive means which engages the upper end of the post 56 of the carrier 54 nearest the leading edge 50. The drive means cooperate with the track sections 18 for engaging the post 56 in the discharge station 13 and for disengaging from the post 56 when the sign has been returned to the receiving station 14.
As illustrated in the drawings, an endless flexible cable 62 is trained around pulleys 63 which are journaled in a cross-member 64 carried by the U-shaped channel 17 of the upper frame 16 and around pulley 65 and drive sheave 66 journalcd on a lateral member 67 carried by the U-shaped leg 27 of the track 25. A motor 68 is carried by the lateral member 67 and is drivingly coupled to the drive sheave 66. Adjusting screws 69 extend between L-shaped members 70 carried on the upper surface of lateral track 22 and lateral member 67 for adjusting the tension of the cable 62.
As more specifically shown in FIGS. 2 and 7, the pusher assemblies 71 are affixed in series along the cable 62. The spacing between the individual pusher assemblies 71 is equal to the desired spacing between individual panels 10 on the display path 12.
The pusher assembly 71 comprises an elongated vertically oriented body 72 affixed to the cable 62 by a clamping bracket 73. Extending downwardly from the point of attachment, the body 72 defines a pusher bracket 74 comprising a pair of horizontal outwardly biased arms 75 for engaging the upper portion of the post 56. Extending upwardly from the point of attachment of the cable 62, the body 72 extends through the upper slot 35 and terminates in a rearward projection 76 formed adjacent the upper edge of the body 72. A pair of laterally projecting support rollers 77 are journaled in the upper portion of the body 72 to movably support the body 72 along the upper roller support surfaces 36 of the projecting flanges 34 responsive to the movement of the cable 62. The rearward projection 76 carries an elongated laterally projecting mounting 78 and a guide roller 79 is journalcd adjacent each end of the mounting 78 for contact with the inner surfaces of the side walls of the track 25 to maintain proper orientation of the rollers 77, particularly when the pusher assembly is passing through the U-shaped leg 27 of the track 25 and the U-shaped channel 17 of the upper frame 16 of the magazine 11.
In operation, the post 56 nearest the leading edge of the panel 10 is in engagement with the pusher bracket 74 of the pusher 71 for movement along the track 25. Upon return of the panel 10 to the receiving station 14 of the magazine 11, the pusher assembly 71 in cooperation with the track section 18 is elevated moving the pusher bracket 74 out of engagement with the post 56. In this manner the panel 10 and carrier 54 are deposited in the receiving station 14 with the posts 56 in substantial alignment with the open ends of the lateral tracks 22 for substantial lateral movement of the panel 10 into the panel storage area 15.
As best shown in FIGS. 6 and 7 a portion 80 of the upper roller support surface 36 is elevated adjacent the innermost opening 39 of track sections 18 so as to raise each pusher assembly 71 upwardly with respect to the lower support surface 38 to disengage the pusher bracket 74 from the post 56. In this manner the carrier 54 is deposited in the receiving station 14 with the posts 56 aligned with the arcuate slots 40 for lateral movement as has been described. Likewise, in the discharge station 13 (FIG. 7) the pusher assembly is raised over the post 56 and is returned to its normal elevation for engagement with the post 56. This is accomplished by removing the flanges 34 in the area adjacent the opening 39 and affixing a spaced apart pair of aligned ramps 81 to the opposing side walls of the track section 18, such as by bolts 82. The ends of the ramps 81 are in substantial abutment with the edges of the flanges 34 to provide an unbroken inclined upper support surface leading to and from the elevated portion 80.
To accommodate the raised position of the pusher assembly 71 while moving along the elevated portion 80 of the upper support surface 36 of the track section 18 in both the discharge station 13 and the receiving station 14, the upper wall of the track sections 18 is cut away over the elevated area to allow the extension therethrough of a portion of the pusher assembly 71 while in the raised position (FIG. 6). The cable 62 is sufiiciently flexible to be carried along with the pusher assembly 71 while passing over the ramps 81.
From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that the display system of the invention allows a large number of panels to be continuously exposed to view in a sequential manner and that the panels displayed may be of large size. Further the system is fully automatic. The panels 10 can be readily changed simply by removing a camming cap 60 and inserting the upper edge 52 of a panel 10 into the interior of the carrier 54 with thepanel depending downwardly from the carrier 54 through the slot 55.
While a particular form of the invention has been illustrated and described, it will be apparent that various modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
