Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method for obtaining an escort memory according to claim 1, and to an escort memory according to claim 2.
- Escort memories are used in different contexts for identification of objects, each provided with such an escort memory.
- One example is marked tools for converting machines within the manufacturing industry.
- bar code marking with associated bar code readers for reading the identification marks.
- Another type of escort memory is constituted by small programmable radio transmitters, which are attachable to objects. These can be programmed with a special equipment and can be activated to transmit the programmed information.
- a problem in connection with these known escort memories is their unreadability for a human user, e.g. a machine operator.
- the object of the invention is to solve the technical problem to provide and produce an escort memory which, simultaneously, is readable to a machine and en clair readable to a human user.
- the expression visual readability is used in the present description to indicate readability and interpretability to a human user of the invention.
- LED-display is treated according to the inventive method, so that it instead of the function of a generally write- and readable presentation device takes on the function of a programmable permanent memory.
- the in this manner produced and programmed permanent memory presents, during usage, i.e.
- the combination of characters when it is energized, the combination of characters which has been permanented by the inventive method.
- the combination of characters is thus visually readable in a form which has a meaning to a human observer, while at the same time it can be made electrically readable to e.g. a computer.
- the escort memory is preprogrammable and attachable to the object to be marked, and is readable by means of a memory connector.
- the escort memory is energized by means of said memory connector and can then be read visually as well as by a machine.
- Another possibility is to attach a non-programmed memory to an object to be marked, which for example can be a tool for a computer controlled converting machine.
- the converting machine can thereby be provided with a memory connector, comprising memory programming means and/or several memory connectors, which is arranged in such a manner that programming as well as reading of an escort memory can be carried out.
- a computer controlled converting machine can have access to a data base where information about the tool can be stored, e.g. machining parameters, machine time etc., and which information also can be presented to an operator.
- a per se already known diode based presentation device for example an LED-display, which comprises groups of light emitting diodes, each group consisting of at least one diode.
- a common type of LED- display comprises e.g. at least one element with seven diode segments for generation of the figures 0-9.
- An arbitrary number of elements can be arranged side by side for producing different character and/or figure combinations. It is also possible to use a presentation device arranged for ASCII code or any other code, and thereby to store and present arbitrary characters.
- a diode has a characteristic which allows a working current, whith a maximum level for said diode, to flow in the forward direction of the diode. If the maximum level of the working current is exceeded, the diode can be burnt off, an electrical interruption arises and the diode can no more allow passage of current. In the invention this fact is utilized for the purpose of obtaining, programming and reading the inventive escort memory.
- the escort memory is programmed, the character or characters to be written in the memory are selected. The selected character comprises certain characteristic segments of those segments which are present .in the display.
- the segments that are not used for the presentation of the selected character are permanently eliminated through a destructive method according to the invention, such that when subsequently all the segments of the display are energized for reading, only the intact segments are activated and the selected character is presented visually as well as electrically.
- the above mentioned programming and electrical reading is executed preferably by means of a computer or some other controller, whereby the elements and the segments are programmed and read successively unit by unit. It is, however, also possible to execute the programming and reading in parallel.
- the preferred embodiment of the inventive method comprises the following steps:
- the diode is overloaded in its forward direction during the permanent programming, but it is also possible to overload the diode in its inverse direction.
- an escort memory is indicated with the reference numeral 1.
- An element in an LED- display comprising seven segments in the form of at least one light emitting diode per segment, is indicated with 2, whereby the seven light emitting diode segments are designated Dl, D2, D3, D4, D5, D6 and D7.
- the escort memory is also provided with two voltage connections V+ and V-, to which a supply voltage V is connected.
- a current generator generally in the shape of a by-passing switch, II...17 and a current limiter R1...R7, generally a resistor, is associated with each group of diodes D1...D7.
- the current generators II...17 are activatable by means of activation conductors A1...A7 and are dimensioned in order to, when activated, generate currents that exceed a value that is destructive to the diodes.
- a read voltage output L1...L7 arranged for reading the memory content, by measurement or by detection of the voltage over each current limiter R1...R7.
- the LED-element 2 can be a conventional, commercially available component, of the kind that is connected to external current limiting resistors, in accordance with the circuit diagram of the drawing.
- the diodes are coupled with a common anode, but it is also possible to couple them with a common cathode.
- a selected current generator II...17 is activated via an activation conductor A1...A7.
- the current rises through the diode segment Dl...D7 until the selected diode segment is permanently burnt, so that no current can flow through it thereafter.
- the diode segment, which is permanently burnt in this manner, is then excluded from the formation of a character in the LED-display 2.
- selected character segments are excluded from the formation of a character until only those diodes that together form the wanted character are intact.
- the escort memory 1 For reading the content of the permanently programmed memory, the escort memory 1 is energized with a supply voltage V, whereby the memory turns visually readable through the shining light emitting diodes of the LED-display.
- the diodes that were destroyed according to the inventive method now form interruptions in the electrical circuit, while the other diodes let through current and form, in combination, a selected character.
- the supply voltage is connected, the character formed by the shining diodes is thus visually readable and en clair interpretable by a human user.
- a voltage measuring or voltage detecting device is connected to the read voltage outputs LI...L7. Over the current limiters R1...R7 there is, at the read voltage outputs a voltage which holds a high value over an intact group of diodes.
- a diode If a diode is permanently burnt, no current flows through the associated current limiter R1...R7, and consequently the read voltage holds a low value. In machine reading, it is therefore actually sufficient to detect whether a voltage is high or low.
- the read voltage is conducted e.g. via a matching circuit or even directly to the input of a computer, whereby a programme, suitable for that purpose, in the computer determines the character written in the memory.
- the escort memory can be programmed in a similar way via a computer and possibly a matching circuit connected to the output of the computer. Data represented in an analogue form could possibly be permanently programmed into the memory by destroying parts of a semi-conductor segment, and with computer aided writing and reading, an analog to digital converter is then used.
- the electrical signals are preferably multiplexed by means of data selectors, comprising switches arranged for each element.
- the signals belonging to the segments of each element can be multiplexed in the same manner, by means of data selectors of the above mentioned kind, e.g. three state buffers.
- the diode segments, the current generators and the current limiters are made as a unit, but in other embodiments the current generators and/or the current limiters can be separated from the diode segments and be comprised in and/or be connected via a memory connector for obtaining and/or programming and/or reading an inventive escort memory.
