  • the two runways are connected, by pairs of uprights associated with cylinder-piston lifting units, to two longitudinal members resting on or embedded in the ground.
  • vehicle lifts of pantograph type are- 10 known, so called because the uprights therein cross each other to form with the longitudinal members and runways two articulated pantograph structures.
  • the hydraulic cylinder-piston lifting units are generally interposed •J-5 between the base longitudinal members and the uprights or between the uprights and the runways, and operated by extending.
  • the force which each of them 20 has to develop in order to raise the lift is very high and requires them to be adequately sized, and in particular to have a considerable diameter.
  • the result is that when at ground level they occupy considerable space (not less than 30 mm) and ramps are required to enable the vehicle to be driven onto the runways.
  • lifts of pantograph type require a high operating pressure and hence a large motor to operate the pump feeding the operating liquid into the cylinder-piston lifting units.
  • a further drawback is that the speed with which the lift rises, related to the power which the lifting system is able to develop, is greater the greater the size of the cylinder- piston units, however for the aforesaid reasons the tendency ' is to limit this size as much as possible, with the result that the speed with which the lift rises is unsatisfactory, this representing a serious limitation especially in vehicle service centres in which the large number of vehicles to be checked daily means that their lifting speed should be high.
  • these measuring instruments would require the lift to have a height which is actually less than the height of a lowered lift, however as they are mounted on the runways, which in any event must have a certain minumum height from the ground, the overall height of the lowered lift is always greater than the minimum height actually required by these instruments.
  • Vehicle lifts of pantograph type embedded in the ground have been proposed, ie with their base longitudinal members housed in suitable compartments provided in the floor, so that the runways are at ground level when lowered.
  • This * virtually eliminates the space problem of the lowered lift, but requires costly underground work which practically absorbs in terms of cost the space advantages which the method provides.
