- the core of each of the panels may be enclosed in a respective laminated plastic film jacket.
- the outer face of the outer panel has indicia display means.
- the core of each panel may comprise a laminate of the magnetic material and a rigid ferromagnetic core plate.
- a backing member for a badge to which a three dimensional display element can be releasably secured comprising a body portion having a front face and a rear face, a mounting means extending from the rear face to enable the badge to be mounted on a carrier, and a first portion of a securing means on or beneath the surface of the front face which can co-operate with a second portion of the securing means located at the rear of the display element to releasably secure the display element to the backing member.
- a badge comprising a three dimensional display element, releasably secured to a backing member according to the preceding aspect, the three dimensional display element including a rear surface on or beneath which the second portion of the securing means is located.
- carrier as used herein is to be understood to include, without limitation, an item of clothing, a bag, satchel or the like, a belt, braces, a curtain, the bars of an infant's cot or cradle, the rear of a car seat, or anything else that a child might legitimately seek to attach a badge to.
- one or both of the portions of the securing means comprise a magnetic element.
- the second portion of the securing means comprises a magnetic element' and the first portion comprises an element formed from a material capable of being attracted to the magnetic element.
- the securing means preferably comprises a fastener of the hook and loop type wherein one of the securing portions comprises a loop fabric layer and the other securing portion comprises a hook fabric layer.
- FIGURE 1 is a front elevation of a badge according to the present invention.
- FIGURE 2 is a side elevation of the badge of figure 1;
- FIGURE 3 is a rear elevation of a backing member forming part of the badge of figure 1;
- FIGURE 4 is an exploded partially cut away side elevation of the badge of figure 1;
- FIGURE 5 is a rear elevation of a display element of the badge of figure 1.
- a badge as generally indicated at 1, comprising a backing member 2 and a three dimensional display element 3.
- the backing member comprises a substantially circular disc 4 having a front face 5 and rear face 6.
- a lip or ridge 7 may optionally be provided around the periphery of the front face 5 to facilitate alignment of the display element 3 when it is being attached.
- a mounting means 8 which enables the badge 1 to be mounted on a suitable carrier, such as an outer garment of a wearer, a school bag, satchel strap or the like.
- the mounting means 8 is in the form of a safety pin or similar, however, any other suitable known mounting means may be employed, including for example, a standard brooch-type pin, a post and butterfly fastener, elasticized ties, straps, or the like.
- a pair of spaced apart mounting blocks 9 are provided to retain one leg of the safety pin on the rear face 6.
- Forming at least a portion of the front face 5 of the backing member 2 is a thin metal plate 10.
- the plate 10 makes up a substantially portion of the front face 5, extending to the edge of or under the lip or ridge 7.
- the three dimensional display element 3 comprises a body 11 formed in any desired three dimensional shape, having a substantially planar rear surface 12 onto or embedded into which is a magnetic 13. If the display element 3 is formed from plastics material or some other castable material the magnetic 13 may be inserted during the casting operation. The function of the magnetic 13 is to attract the metal plate 10 when the rear surface 12 of the display element 3 is placed adjacent the plate 10, thereby securing the display element 3 to the backing member 2.
- the plate 10 may be formed from magnetic material and, if so, the magnetic 13 may be replaced with a small metal element.
- a loop and hook type fastener may be used to secure the display element 3 to the backing member 2, with for example, a sheet of loop fabric layer replacing the plate 10 and a small disc of hook fabric layer being included or otherwise attached to the rear surface 12 of the display element 3 in place of the magnetic 13.
- a suitable commercially available hook and loop type fastener would be "VELCRO" TM.
- the strength of the attraction or bond between the two portions of the securing mechanism must be such as to retain the display element 3 in position on the backing member 2 even if the badge 1 is subjected to reasonably large bumps and knocks. However, the attraction or bond must be weak enough so that a child can release the display element 3 by pulling it off while still wearing the badge 1.
- a child may attach the badge 1 to a desired carrier, such as for example, the lapel of an item of clothing, a bag, or the back of the front seat of a car. If the child gets tired of the display element 3 presently secured to the backing member 2 it may be simply pulled off and replaced with a new display element 3.
- a desired carrier such as for example, the lapel of an item of clothing, a bag, or the back of the front seat of a car.
- the size of the backing member 2 may be tailored to the particular application the badge 1 is intended for so that, for example, if the badge 1 is intended as an article of decoration or ornamentation a smaller backing member 2 would be appropriate, sized to accommodate one, or perhaps two colorful decorative display elements at a time.
- a badge of this size could then conveniently be positioned on the lapel of an article of clothing worn by a person, or on a bag or strap of a satchel.
- a badge of this size is particularly suited to use, for example, by a company such as a fast food retailer, as a promotional item.
- the backing member 2 may be printed or marked with the company's name, logo or well known slogan and the display element 3 might be a well known cartoon or television character.
- the promotion could involve encouraging a child to collect a number of different display elements which may only be available by purchasing further meals or the like.
- the display elements 3 could be interchangeable on the backing member 2.
- the backing member 2 could be larger, say for example, up to between 10 and 15 centimetres in at least one direction.
- a backing member 2 could be used in conjunction with infants such that a number of brightly coloured display elements 3 could be secured to the backing member 2 at one time, being interchangeable by an adult supervising the infant but not being able to be removed by the infant themself.
- the display elements 3 could incorporate such things as mirrors or soundeffect producers such as rattles, bells etc.
- the badge 1 in that situation could be secured to the bars of a cot, cradle or the like by way of straps or a large safety pin.
- large sized backing members 2 could function as the base for a plurality of display elements 3 at any one time, which elements 3 could be used to form a puzzle, game or the like.
- This application could be useful for entertaining a child on long car trips or the like with the badge 1 mounted at the rear of a car seat within reach of the child sitting behind.
- three dimensional display elements 3 has a number of advantages; they provide an easily gripable object for disengagement from the backing member 2 and they also provide greater scope than two dimensional display elements 3 for use as ornaments, toys, parts of games and puzzles etc.
