Description

g= 1938- H. L. PULVER 7 2,128,319
SEPARABLE BROOCH Filed March 27, 1957 /72 7672' far Patented Aug. 30, 1938 UNITED STATES mane PATENT OFFICE 2,128,319 SEPARABLE BROOCH Harold L. Pulver, Providence, R. I. Application March 2'7, 1937, Serial No. 133,332 7 Claims. (01. 63-20) My present invention relates to brooches, and deals with an improved construction for convertible brooches.
It is the principal object of my invention to 5 provide an improved construction for convertible brooches for facilitating attachment and detachment of separate ornaments to a common base.
It is a further object of my invention to reduce the cost of manufacture and to increase the 1 strength of the parts by utilizing stamped metal which is formed into simple shapes having substantial strength.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features in View, my invention consists 15 of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detached description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, and more specifically defined in the claims appended thereto.
20 In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of an assembled brooch;
Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an ornament showing a support plate arrangement;
25 Fig. 4 is a view of the cooperating base;
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a separable clamp device;
Fig. '7 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 3
30 and showing a modified construction for the ornament;
Fig. 8 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 4 and showing a modified construction of the base; and
35 Figs. 9 and 10 are perspective views similar to Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 showing further modified constructions.
Referring to the drawing, the novel brooch assembly I 9, as illustrated, comprises two sepa- 40 rate ornaments ll, I2 which are detachably secured to a common base l3 whereby either ornament may be removed from the base and independently used as a clip, an ornament per se, a buckle, or the like. Each ornament has a sup- 45 port element l4 secured to the back thereof, the preferred construction consisting of a metal plate which may be readily stamped out of sheet stock, and which is soldered or otherwise securely locked to the back of the ornament. The support 50 plate M has its outward edge [5 bent upwardly at right angles thereto, this outward edge having spaced openings l6 formed therein, and spaced resilient fingers I! are preferably struck from the body of the plate and extend upwardly as 55 shown in Fig. 3. The base l3, see Fig. 4, consists of a rectangular plate l8, preferably stamped from sheet metal, having spaced lugs H9 at each end thereof designed to engage the openings 16, and spaced slots 20 positioned as illustrated in Fig. 4, and designed as catch ele- 5' ments for releasable engagement with the fingers ll, the base being also provided with a fastening arrangement 2|, such as a pin or the like.
As illustrated in Fig. 5, the base and the ornaments are detachably secured together by posi- 10' tioning the lugs l9 in the openings l6 and then snapping the center part of the base with its catch slots 20 over the resilient latch fingers ll, whereby the parts are releasably held together. To separate the parts, either the ornaments or the base are moved so as to detach the spring fingers I 7 from the catch slots 20, the lugs l9 then being readily removable from the openings I6; a clamp device 22 may then be locked into detachable engagement with the plate M, the clamp device having a bottom plate 23, lugs 24 corresponding to the base lugs I9, slots 25 corresponding to the base slots 20, and a spring clamp 26 which is hingedly mounted to the bottom plate 23, as by means of upstanding hinge ears 25 2'! and a hinge pin 28, a coil spring 29 of standard type being mounted on the hinge pin to maintain the clamp 26 resiliently urged towards the bottom plate 23; the clamp has teeth 39, if desired, for locking engagement with a fabric 30 such as a dress hem.
Instead of using openings l6 such as shown in Fig. 3, and cooperating lugs l9 on the base plate, the support plate and the base may be formed as illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8, the support plate 3| having a socket or recess formed at one end during the stamping operation by an upper wall 32 and one or two side walls 33, and having spaced tongues 34 similar to the tongues H. In this construction the base 35, see Fig. 4, does not require any end lugs such as l9, but has a plurality of catch slots 36 to cooperate with the tongues 34, the end of the base being inserted in the recess, and the slots 36 engaging the spaced tongues 34.
If preferred, a construction such as illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10 may be utilized, the support plate 31 having an end portion 38 provided with aligning means such as spaced openings 39, spring fingers 46 being formed on the sides or adjacent 50- the sides of the support plate. The base 4|, see Fig. 10, is adapted to cooperate with this support plate and has spaced lugs 42 which are insertable in the openings 39, the sides of the base 4| being adapted to snap past the spring fingers 40 for detachable securing of the ornaments to the base. The modified constructions are also provided with separable clamp members similar to the clamp device 22, but formed to correspond with the shapes of the bases as shown in Figs. 8 and 10.
While I have described a specific constructional embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that the parts may be made of any material, and that their size, shape and relative positioning may be changed to suit the requirements for different brooch designs, without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
