Definitions
- This invention relates to a security device for a vehicle which can be either incorporated in the vehicle upon manufacture or can be fitted to deter vehicle theft.
- the invention provides a vehicle security device including a first member pivotally mountable for movement between a first position wherein it overlies, and prevents useful access to ,a pedal of a vehicle and a second position wherein it lies flat against a floor of a vehicle, the first member being pivotably connected to a second member which can move between a first position wherein it locks the first member in its first position and a second position wherein it lies flat on the floor of the vehicle.
- the second member can be connected to the first member by a hinge ' '* which extends traversely of the vehicle and in the second position the two members can lie flat on the vehicle floor with the first member disposed forwardly of the second member.
- the means for locking the two members in the first position can include an attachment on the vehicle and means for interconnecting to the attachment and the second member.
- the second member can have a slot adjacent its rear edge engagable with a hasp upstanding from a vehicle or adjacent structure.
- a key operated separate bolt can pass through an aperture or slot in one or other of the members and engage a complimentary formation on the vehicle floor.
- Means can be provided for locking or restraining the two members in their second position so as to enable normal driving of the vehicle with the members in their second position.
- the two members should be so constructed that the upper surfaces when in the second position ' providing a smooth uninterrupted false floor to a vehicle so as to avoid inference with control of the vehicle by use of the pedals.
- the two members can be flat plates, grids or comparable formations arranged to lie flat together on the vehicle floor and can be covered with a mat or comparable upper surface so as to present a smooth plain surface to a driver r s feet.

- Figure 2 is a similar view showing the device in a first condition thereof
- Figure 3 is a view similar to figure 2 but showing a second device

- Figure 5 is a side elevation illustrating the device of figure 4 in its second configuration.
- a motor vehicle has pedals (10) at the front end of a floor (11) of a driver'.s compartment (12) .
- the device (13) includes a first member (14) in the form of a plate whose forward end is hinged along line (15) to an anchor plate (16) which can be secured to the floor by bolts or the like (not shown) .
- the member (14) is hinged along line (17) to a second member in the form of a plate (18) .
- the rear end of plate (18) is hinged at line (19) to a locking plate (20) .
- the second member (18) has a slot (22) or like aperture and locking plate (20) has a similar slot (23) .
- a hasp (24) which can be pivotally attached to the vehicle floor so as to be capable of lying in a flat or upright condition.
- the first member (14) In a first configuration of the device (figure 2) the first member (14) is in a position where it prevents effective access to the pedals (10) .
- the second member (18) maintains the first member (14) in this position by having locking plate (25) engaged with hasp (24) .
- a padlock or comparable device (20) can be engaged with hasp (24) to secure a device in its first condition. In this configuration the vehicle is immobilised as a thief can not effectively access the pedals.
- the first member (14) and the second member (18) lie flat on the floor of the vehicle.
- the hasp can project through the aperture (22) and the padlock (25) can be engaged if necessary simply to locate the padlock and keep it in position in the vehicle and ready for use when desired.
- this is not necessary as the lock could easily be stored in some other position.
- the members (14) and (18) provide a smooth and acceptable surface for a drivers feet so that the driver does not have any discomfort in driving which could have potentially dangerous consequences.
- the padlock can be dispensed with and a lock, incorporated with the second member (18) , and or locking plate (20) about of the lock being engageable with the hasp (24) or similar feature.
- the first member in a simplified form of device (26) the first member is in the form of a plate (27) hinged at one edge to the vehicle floor within a pair of ring bolts (28) .
- the first member (27) is hinged at line (29) to a second member (30) also in the form of a sheet metal plate.
- the plate (30) Towards its rear, the plate (30) has a slot (31) through which can pass a hasp (32) for securement by a padlock or the like (not shown) .
- the first member (27) can incline forwardly so as to be close to the pedals (10) or it can slope backwardly as shown in figure 3.
- the two members (27) (30) can lay flat and side by side on the vehicle floor (11) when not required in their first configuration.
- the hasp (32) can either lay flat on the floor beneath the plates (if it is pivotable or disposable in a specially provided recess) or can project through a second slot (33) in the plate (30) .
- a lock or locks can be incorporated with the second member (30) so as to be engageable with the hasp (32) or similar feature when the hasp projects through either one of the slots (31) or (33) .
- the invention is not limited to the precise details of the a foregoing and variations can be made thereto.
- the second member or the first member can be securable in their second con iguration by any convenient means other than the hasp and padlock arrangement described.
- a bolt arrangement could be provided which would extend laterally from the two members and engage with adjacent vehicle structure being lockable in the first configuration.
- the formation could be provided in the vehicle floor and a removable lock body with a bolt could be engaged to pass through an aperture in one or other of the plates and engage such locking formation.
- the two members can be frames, grids or the like. It is important, of course, when the two members lay on the vehicle floor and provide a smooth and convenient surface for engagement by a drivers feet and not interfere in any way with the drivers operation of the vehicle control.
