Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a carton for packing piece-form or powdery material, the carton having a bottom, a lid, a front wall, a back wall and ends formed by side walls connected to said front and back walls, and a tear strip provided by perforation for opening the lid.
  • Prior art cartons for piece-form or powdery materials are opened by various cut-offs and perforations in the corners or narrow side walls of the carton. Typically they are opened by breaking the perforation and pushing a flap cut by the perforation into the carton for pouring the powder or the like material out from the carton via the opening formed in this way.
  • These methods have for example the drawback that it is often difficult to create the opening, i.e. to break the perforation. Further, the created opening is permanently open and the carton cannot be closed in order to prevent the material from running out from the carton if the carton is turned over or dropped.
  • a further drawback of this kind of carton is that the size of the opening is usually rather small and the material runs slowly out from the carton through the opening and, in particular in case of washing powders, lumps of powder, which are caused by moisture, may totally block the opening.
  • a carton having a lid which is detachable at its three sides from the rest of the carton via a tear strip.
  • the lid is easy to open and the material to be dosed comes readily out from the carton but it is almost impossible to close the carton in such a way that it does not open if it is dropped.
  • end walls of the carton by providing a tear strip extending substantially over the whole width of the front wall of the carton between the front portion of the lid and the adhesive strip; by providing perforations between the lid side portions and the side extensions of the adhesive strip, extending from the tear strip to the back wall of the carton for detaching the lid side portions from the side extensions of the adhesive strip, whereby the carton is opened by tearing off the" tear strip and lifting the lid at the front portion, thereby breaking the perforations in the side portions.
  • the lid comprises portions overlapping the outer surfaces of the front and the side walls of the carton, i.e. a front portion and side portions connected to the adhesive strip, thus forming a tight closed carton; and that there is a tear strip formed by a perforation between the front and side portions of the lid for partly opening the carton; and further, that there are perforations in side portions of the lid, extending from the ends of the tear strip to the back wall of the carton for easy opening by tearing after the tear strip has been removed.
  • An advantage provided by a carton according to the invention is that the carton is easy to open and still fairly tightly reclosable after the carton has been opened. Thus the carton is handy to use and it is easy to dose and take the product from the carton.
  • Fig. 1 illustrates schematically a carton blank according to the invention
  • Fig. 2 illustrates an assembled carton according to the invention
  • Fig. 3 illustrates an opened carton according to the invention.
  • Figure 1 illustrates a carton blank according to the invention, having a front wall 1, a bottom 2, a back wall 3, a lid 4, and a front portion 5 of the lid.
  • An adhesive strip 6 to be adhered to the front wall and a tear strip 7 separated by a perforation between the front portion 5 and the adhesive strip 6 are connected to the said lid front portion 5.
  • Side portions la and lb are connected to the front wall 1 and side portions 2a - 5a and 2b - 5b connected correspondingly to the bottom 2, the back wall 3, the lid 4 and the front portion of the lid.
  • Further, to the adhesive strip 6 are connected its extensions 6a and 6b which via perforations 7a and 7b are connected also to the side extensions 5a and 5b of the lid front portion 5.
  • the said perforations form together with the tear strip 7 the opening seam along which the lid of a finished carton is detacheable in order to open the carton.
  • scores 8a and 8b provided between the side portions la- 6a, and correspondingly lb -6b, and the walls, the bottom and the lid along which scores the side portions are folded in relation to the corresponding wall, the bottom or the lid in order to assemble the carton.
  • scores 9 which is perpendicular to the scores 8a and 8b, between the front wall 1 and the bottom 2, and correspondingly a score 10, which is parallel with the score 9, between the bottom 2 and the back wall 3.
  • the edges of the lid side portions 4a and 4b and the edges of the side extensions 5a and 5b of the lid front portion which edges will face the back wall in the finished carton, have been cut bevelled along lines 15a and 15b and correspondingly perforated along lines 7a and 7b so that the edges of these portions facing the back wall extend past the corners 16a and 16b between the back wall and the lid towards the bottom in a finished carton.
  • the carton illustrated in Figure 1 is assembled by folding the blank about the axis of the scores 9, 10, 11 and 12 so that the front portion 5 of the lid 4, the tear strip 7 and the adhesive strip 6 overlap the front wall 1 and, correspondingly, the side portions 5a, 5b and 6a, 6b overlap the side portions la and lb of the front wall 1. Then the adhesive strip 6 and its side extensions 6a and 6b are adhered to the front wall 1 and its side portions la and lb so as to form a circle. After this, one of the side portions of the back wall, either 3a or 3b, is folded at first. In the following, the assembly of the carton end by the side portion 3a is described, as an example, as both ends are preferably assembled in the same order.
  • the side portion 3a of the back wall 3 is folded around the score 8a in order to form an end of the carton. Subsequently, the side portion 2a of the bottom is folded to overlap the side portion 3a and adhered thereto in order to form a sealed joint. Further, the side portion la and the side extension 6a of the adhesive strip 6 already adhered to said side portion la, and the side extension 5a of the lid front portion 5 connected via perforation 7a to the said adhesive strip side extension 6a, are folded to overlap the side portions 2a and 3a and the side portion la is adhered both to the side portion 2a and the side portion 3a. Finally, the lid side portion 4a is folded to overlap the side port .on 5a of the lid front portion and is adhered thereto.
  • the side portions lb - 6b are folded and adhered to each other in the corresponding way and order, thereby providing tight ends for the carton which prevent the powdery material from exiting from the carton throu ⁇ h its corners or seams.
  • the material, powder or other material, to be contained in the carton is dosed into it and the carton is ready to be delivered for use after the end has been closed.
  • Figure 2 illustrates a carton according to the invention when assembled and ready for use. It can be seen from the figure how the tear strip 7 extends from the end of the side portion la via the front wall 1 to the end of the side portion lb. When the tear strip 7 is removed the front wall 1 of the carton and the halves of the ends by the front wall 1 are opened and, by lifting the lid 4 at its front portion 5, the perforations 7a and 7b are easily broken.
  • Figure 3 illustrates a carton according to the invention When opened.
  • the tear strip 7 has been torn away and the adhesive strip 6 and its side extensions 6a and 6b have remained in their places.
  • the perforations 7a and 7b have been broken open and it has become possible to turn the lid to the positions shown in the figure and the carton is fully open whereby it is easy to take, for example, the washing powder from the carton with a measure or the like device.
  • the carton can be closed by turning the lid 4 from the position illustrated in Figure 3 back to the position illustrated in Figure 2 whereby the side portions 5a and 5b and the front portion 5 of the lid overlap the outer surfaces of the side portions la and lb and the front wall 1 of the carton thereby closing the carton relatively tightly despite the fact that the carton has been torn open.
  • the order of glueing the side portions described above is advantageous when the product to be packed in the carton is powdery, for example washing powder, since the corners between various portions of the carton are as tight as possible and thus the powder cannot run out from the carton via the corners.
  • the order of glueing the portions of the carton can be chosen freely since the seams need not be as tight as with a powdery material.
  • the form of the different portions of the carton and the form of the tear strip and the perforations providing the opening seam may vary and they may be differently located, if necessary, as far as the tightness requirement of the material to be packed in the carton is paid attention to.
