Definitions
- the present invention relates to an apparatus for automatic coupling and uncoupling of leaders on to and off from a trot-line, wherein the leaders are connectable to the trot-line by means of claw-shaped members cooperating by snap-fit with spherical members on the trot-line.
- a trot-line used in commercial fishing can have a length of several thousand meters.
- the handling of a trot-line during baiting, setting and hauling has traditionally been very laborious. Therefore, it has been a continuous development of means for mechanization of said labour.
- One of the major problems has been to prevent the leaders with their hooks from entanglements in the trot-line, when storing and handling said line.
- the problem can be avoided by separating the leaders from the main line when the trot-line is hauled and storing them separately, whereafter they will be reattached to the trot-line when its set from the boat.
- SU BST I TUT means for catching the leaders, when they are disconnec ⁇ ted from the trot-line during hauling.
- each hook is stored in a guide means while the entire main line hangs in loose turns below the guide means.
- These systems are space consuming on a fishing vessel. Besides, they normally need to be served by 3-4 men.
- One of the objects of the invention is to provide a func ⁇ tional apparatus for handling trot-line both when setting and hauling the line.
- the apparatus comprises means for coupling the claw-shaped members on the spherical members of the trot-line, means for uncoupling the claw-shaped members from the spherical trot-line members, and at least one magazine for the leaders located between said members.
- Fig. 1 shows an apparatus according to the invention diagrammatically
- Fig. 2 shows a full length magazine belonging to the apparatus
- Fig. 3 is a section through the magazine
- FIG. 4 shows in a larger scale means for coupling 1 e a - ders to the trot-line
- Fig. 5 correspondingly shows means for decoupling leaders from the trot-line
- Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing means for rebending hooks.
- the apparatus shown in the drawings can be mounted on fishing vessels with a size both above as well as below 80 gross tonnage and uses a type of couplings between the trot-line and the leaders being described in SE,A, 458 736.
- These couplings comprise claw-shaped members 10 (see Fig. 3) each being connected to a leader 11 with a hook 12 and coupled by snap-fit to spherical member 14. These members are mounted at suitable intervals along the trot- line 13.
- the apparatus comprises a frame 15, the left part 16 of which (see Fig. 1) carries means for coupling the claw- shaped members onto the spherical members 14 of the trot- line 13.
- the right side of the apparatus comprise means 17 for uncoupling the claw-shaped members 10 from the spherical members 14 of the trot-line 13.
- a magazine 18 is removably mounted, so that it bridges a gap between these devices 16, 17.
- the apparatus is so designed that the trot- line 13 which, when it is not in use is stored upon a capstan barrel 19, will be set out at the left end 16 of the apparatus where a baiter, not shown in the drawings but well known in the field, preferably is arranged in such way that the trot-line with the hooks pass through said baiter to snag bait.
- the hauling in of the trot-line accordingly takes place at the right side of the apparatus, where fish are removed from the leaders by
- S UBSTITUT means not shown in the drawings but well known in the field, and the trot-line is winched back up onto the capstan barrel 19.
- the magazine 18 is used as a storage depot for leaders 10-12, in a way that will be described in the following.
- Fig. 2 shows the magazine 18 in full length with a lower rail 20 for claw-shaped members 10 and an upper rail 21 for hooks 12. Both rails run in parallel between the parts 16 and 17, but are displaced somewhat horizontally, resulting in that the leader lines 11 will be running diagonally between the members 10 and the hooks 12. This means that the height of the magazine will be reduced so that it can be produced in a light weight, in spite of its length of up to about 4 meters.
- one of these magazines can house about 700 hooks with leaders and claw-shaped members.
- the magazine is provided with a magnetic means 22, the purpose of which is to attract the hooks 12, so that these are held still, even if the magazine is lifted out of the apparatus for storing, e.g. in an up side down manner.
- the magazine 18 is so designed that the tips and the barbs of the hooks are housed in a channel 23. The slot opening of this channel is so narrow, that one hook can not pass by another hook in the channel 23.
- the apparatus works in the following way:
- the coupling means 27 comprises a plunger 28 which can move up or down and is actuated when one of the spherical members 14 on the main line 13 strikes the fork 26 and brings it to rotate about its axis 26a.
- the connection between the movements of the fork 26 and the plunger 28 can be accomplished via mechanic, electric or hydraulic means.
- the plunger 28 is movable substantially in right angle to the main line 13, past an extension 29 of the lower rail 20 which carries the claw-shaped members 10, said extension running in parallel with the- line.
- the series of members 10 are pressed by the feeder means 20b, e.g. an endless driven rubber belt running along the rail 20 and the extension toward the left side of Fig. 1 and 4. This makes the first member 10 in the series move past the end of the rail extension 29 until it abuts the stop means 30.
- the plunger 28 moves up and down between stop means 30 and the end of the rail extension 24 and will then push said first member in the series down in i the figure against a second pivotally journalled stop means 31. This will make the claw-shaped member 10 grip around the main line 13 and the next following claw- shaped member can snap into a spherical space between the two claws.
- the claw-shaped member will then be grabbed and pulled with the spherical member to pass between the stop means 30 and the pivotally journalled stop means 31 which moves against the action of a spring means not shown in the drawing.
- the next following spherical member will actuate the fork 26 which in the meantime has returned to the normal position shown in Fig. 4, so that a new claw-shaped member will be brought into the path of the spherical member.
- the setting of the line can be done automatically as the fishing vessel sails forward with a speed of 7-10 knots which corresponds to a rate of about 2-3 leaders per second.
- the hauling in of the trot-line takes place at the opposite end 17 of the apparatus, adjacent where the fish are being removed.
- the trot-line is hauled in from the side of the vessel via a first roller, not shown in the drawings, a channel 32 and a second roller 33, through a catch eye 34 past an uncoupling means 35 and a pivotally journalled fork 36 to a pair of feeder rollers 37 and 38 and further on to the capstan barrel 19.
- the catch eye 34 is adapted to catch each hook 12 and guide it onto an extension 39 of the upper magazine rail 21 for the hooks.
- One part 40 of this extension rail 39 is rotatable journalled and provided with a slit 41 (see Fig. 6) which is adapted to grab the barb of the hook 12 and bend the hook to a normal position from which the hook may deviate if a fish caught on the hook, e.g. with its jaw boon on the hook has been pulled of said hook.
- a brush holder 42 runs along the rail extension 39 which is used for retardation of the hook when it moves along the rail as well as for removal of remnants of fish and bait.
- the claw-shaped member 10 stays with the main line 13 through the catch eye 34 and forward to the means 35 for uncoupling, which is vertically adjustable about an axis 43 by means of a cam curve which can be adjusted by a handle 44.
- the frame 15 also carries guide means 45 for the leaders which guides the leader line 11 in toward an endless chain transporter 46.
- the chain runs around ver ⁇ tically journalled chain wheels (not shown in the drawing) and is equipped with equally distanced conveyor
- SUBSTITUTE SH bolts 47 These bolts are conveyed by means of the transporter 46 in phase with the conveyance of the main line 13, wherein the next following bolt catches the leader line lla when the related claw-shaped member 10 has reached the means 35 for uncoupling, and the spherical member 14 passes through an opening which does not allow the passage of the claw-shaped member 10.
- the related hook 12a will stop for a moment upon the rotatable part 40 of the extension rail 39, so that the hooks will be corrected when so needed.
- the manoeuvring of the rotatable part 40 is affected by means of the pivoting fork 36 which is pivoted back and forth when a spherical member 14 passes.
- the connection between the movements of the fork 36 and the part 40 can be accomplished via mechanic, electric or hydraulic means.
- the claw-shaped means 10 is pulled up against a concave surface 48 which is intended for cooperation with the round surface of the claw-shaped member 10, so that said member is guided during its movement forward in with the opening between the two claws toward the pointed end 49 of an extension 50 of the rail 20 in the magazine 18.
- conveyor means 51 for conveying the claw-shaped members with the leaders 11 in the direction of the magazine 18.
- the hauling in of the trot-line can take place automatically at a rate of about 1 leader each third second.
- spherical members are shown at smaller intervals than normally in order to show the operation more clearly during coupling and decoupling of the claw-shaped members.
- the normal distance between the spherical members are about 2 meters.
