A. 2,583,293 and USA 4,776,403 (A. LEJOSNE) describe automatic devices for fighting forest fires which comprise a first tank containing an extinguishing liquid, which is equipped with a telescopic vertical column carrying, at its top , a rotary water dispenser; a source of compressed gas which is connected to the tank by motorized shutter means and means for automatically controlling these shutter means in the event of fire.
The devices described in the last two documents cited above are relatively expensive, because they must include as many tanks as there are telescopic columns.
An object of the present invention is to provide automatic fire fighting installations which are improvements to the installations described in the last two documents cited and which make it possible to protect a larger area at a lower cost.
L'objectif de la présente invention est atteint au moyen d'un dispositif pour combattre automatiquement les incendies de forêt à l'intérieur d'un périmètre déterminé qui comporte, en combinaison : - une source d'eau sous pression qui est connectée à un réseau de canalisations enterrées ;The objective of the present invention is achieved by means of a device for automatically fighting forest fires within a determined perimeter which comprises, in combination: - a source of pressurized water which is connected to a network of buried pipelines;
sensiblement égal au niveau desdites canalisations enterrées;- Several telescopic columns which are located inside said perimeter, each of said columns comprising several, coaxial sliding tubes, carrying at their top a water diffuser, which tubes are housed at rest in a casing driven vertically into the ground, which casings are connected to said network of pipes by their upper end, at a level substantially equal to the level of said buried pipelines;
And means for detecting the presence of a fire and for automatically controlling the supply of water to said columns in the event that a fire is detected, which has the effect of sending water into said telescopic columns pressure which causes the columns to rise and then sprinkle in said perimeter.
According to a particular embodiment, the source of pressurized water is constituted by a central tank, which contains water at atmospheric pressure and by a source of compressed gas which is connected to said central tank by means of a motorized valve.
Advantageously, the lower end of the external sliding tube of each telescopic column carries, at its periphery, a guide part of said sliding tube in said casing, which part has longitudinal grooves separated by grooves through which the water under pressure passes. which circulates in an intermediate space between said casing and said external sliding tube.
The invention results in new devices for fighting forest fires which make it possible to automatically protect a given surface by preventing, if possible, that fire enters it and by extinguishing the flames which arise in this surface.
Compared to known devices each comprising a water tank and a telescopic column which folds inside thereof, the devices according to the invention which comprise a plurality of telescopic columns supplied by a water distribution network or by the same central tank * , protect a larger area with a lower installation cost.
Compared to known sprinkling devices comprising a telescopic column which retracts at rest in a casing, which is supplied with water by its lower end, the devices according to the invention in which the casing is supplied with water near its upper end and substantially at the level of buried pipes, avoids the costs which were necessary to bring the water to the lower end of the casing which can be located by example at a depth of around 6 meters.
In the devices according to the invention, almost all of the casing can be a simple casing driven into the ground by traditional drilling techniques. Only the upper end of the casing, which is located in a buried manhole, is constituted by a special sleeve carrying a vertical water inlet opening located in a shell-shaped enclosure, which envelops said opening.
The advantage of being able to supply water to each column via the upper end of the casing associated with the grooved guide ring, which is fixed to the periphery of the lower end of the external sliding tube of each column, is to be able to calculate the section of the grooves located between the grooves to obtain the desired water flow so that the rise of the telescopic column takes place at a determined speed and does not risk being too rapid and damaging the column.
In addition, once the column is fully deployed, the grooved guide part is placed outside the water circuit, so that the pressure drop due to this part, which was beneficial during the rise of the column, is automatically removed from the moment when the column diffuses water and the water projection pressure is therefore maximum. which allows to obtain a good projection distance of the water.

The tank 1 is placed inside a forest or a wooded space which it is desired to protect automatically from fires. It contains an extinguishing liquid, usually water, which can be mixed with a product that delays the spread of fire.
The reservoir 1 is associated with a source of compressed gas which preferably consists of cylinders 2 containing nitrogen which are equipped with a pressure reducer and which are connected to the interior of the reservoir 1 by means of '' a motorized valve not visible in the drawing.
The tank 1 comprises a dip tube 3 which is open at its lower end and whose upper end is connected to a network of buried pipes 4.
A plurality of water spray columns 5 are connected to the network • _. Each column has a diffuser 6. which is placed at the top of a telescopic tube composed of several coaxial tubes which slide one inside the other.
Au repos les tubes d'une colonne sont emboîtés les uns dans les autres' et sont contenus â l'intérieur d'un tubage fixe 8, qui est enfoncé verticalement dans le sol et qui a la même hauteur que les tubes composant la colonne.FIG. 1 represents the telescopic columns in the deployed state where they have a height greater than that of the vegetation which surrounds them, for example a height of the order of 25 meters in the case of a Mediterranean forest. Break the tubes in a column are fitted into each other "and are contained within a fixed casing 8, which is pressed vertically into the ground and which has the same height as the tubes making up the column.
Figure 1 shows an example in which the columns are arranged along two lines to form a curtain of water opposing the progression of a flame front.
Alternatively, the columns can be arranged on a curved line surrounding a surface to be protected, for example a park or a wooded area surrounding a house. The diffusers 6 project sprayed water at a distance of the order of 30 meters and the distance between the columns can be of the order of 50 meters.
The device includes automatic detectors la which detect the presence of a fire and which can for example be infrared sensors or thermal sensors which analyze the rate of change of temperature.
When a fire is detected by one of the sensors 1a, it automatically controls the opening of the automatic valve connecting the source of compressed gas to the reservoir 1. The gas pressurizes the water and drives it to the network 4. The pressurized water causes the telescopic columns to deploy and, after deployment. the sprayed water is projected by the diffusers 6 and it sprinkles the forest in a protected perimeter by preventing that the fire cannot penetrate into it and by extinguishing the beginnings of fire which could intervene in this perimeter.
The duration of spraying is generally greater than the duration of passage of the front of the flames pushed by the wind, so that when all the water of the tank 1 has been spilled, in general any danger of fire in the protected perimeter is eliminated . It should be noted that the example shown in FIG. 1 is not limitative. The network of buried pipes 4 can be supplied by any other source of pressurized water, for example by a pump or by a water network supplied by a high water tank or by a water tank under pressure. Figure 2 is an elevational view on a larger scale showing on the left a telescopic column 5 in the deployed position. This column is composed for example of three coaxial sliding tubes 5 ^, 52. 53, each having a length of 6 meters and a fixed casing 8 which is driven vertically into the ground and which has a height slightly greater than 6 meters, so that the three tubes in the retracted position are contained in the casing 8, as shown on the right side of FIG. 2.
Ce regard 9 contient une vanne motorisée 10 par l'intermédiaire de laquelle l'extrémité supérieure du tubage 8, est connectée au réseau de canalisations 4.The upper end of the casing 8 is located inside a manhole 9 which is embedded in the ground. This manhole 9 contains a motorized valve 10 via which the upper end of the casing 8 is connected to the network of pipes 4.
The external sliding tube 5] _. that is to say the lower tube having the largest diameter carries, at its lower end, longitudinal grooves 11 which bear against the internal wall of the fixed casing 8. so that they guide the tube 5 to the inside the casing 8 when the column rises, leaving an intermediate space 14 between the casing 8 and the outer tube 5. The grooves 11 are separated by grooves.
The casing 8 comprises, near its lower end, a stop 12, on which the lower ends of the sliding tubes 5j_ come to bear. 5 when the column is folded, so that there is a chamber 13 between the lower ends of the sliding tubes folded in the casing and the bottom of the casing.
When a fire is detected, the pressurized water coming from the central reservoir 1 through the buried pipe network 4 enters the casing 8 near the top of the latter at a level which corresponds substantially to that of the pipes 4. L water descends by circulating in the annular space 14 located between the casing 8 and the external sliding tube 5χ. It passes through the grooves located between the grooves 11, arrives in the chamber 13 and enters the internal tube 53 through the lower end thereof which is open.
Lorsque le tube 5^ est monté, les canneluresWater successively fills the tubes 53, 52 and 5ι by driving them upwards. When the tube 5 ^ is mounted, the splines
It can be seen in this figure that the casing 8 has a threaded upper end 15, onto which is screwed a threaded sleeve 16 which extends the casing upwards. It can also be seen that the bottom of the casing 8 comprises a part 17. which delimits an annular groove 17a, in the form of a half-torus, which surrounds a central apex. The upper edge of the part 17 serves as a support for an annular seal 19, which is interposed between the part 17 and the lower end of a part 20 which is screwed onto the lower end of the external sliding tube 5 ^.
The lower end of the piece 20 covers the end of the outer tube 5 ^ and forms a shoulder against which the end of the median tube 52- The internal tube 5χ is suspended from the diffuser 6 which rests on the upper end.
It can be seen in FIG. 3 that the lower ends of the grooves 11a are profiled in the form of a deflector 11b. The water which progresses according to the arrows, passes through the grooves 11a and is returned inside the telescopic column by the toric groove 17a.
Figure 3 shows in dotted lines the profile of a groove 11. It can be seen that the upper end of the latter ends in a point, so that the grooves 11a have a flared upper end which facilitates the entry of water in the grooves.
We see in Figure 5 that the grooves 11 are relatively wide. Their width is determined and therefore the total section of the grooves 11a located between the grooves to obtain a water flow which corresponds to a determined speed of rise of the column, for example at a speed of the order of 1 m / s. The speed of passage of water through the grooves 11a is determined by the pressure difference, i.e. by the pressure of the gas. The water flow rate is equal to this speed multiplied by the total section of the grooves and this section is calculated in order to obtain a flow rate which corresponds to the increase in volume of the column when the latter rises by a determined length, for example one meter long if you want to obtain a speed of one meter per second.
La figure 4 est une coupe axiale d'un mode de réalisation du manchon 16 qui se visse sur l'extrémité supérieure du tubage 8.FIG. 4 is an axial section of an embodiment of the sleeve 16 which screws onto the upper end of the casing 8.
This figure shows the end of the buried pipe 4. which is connected to the sleeve 16 at a level which is slightly above the level of the buried pipe.
The sleeve 16 has a vertical opening 21, the height of which is greater than that of the grooves 11. This vertical opening is disposed inside an enclosure 22 which envelops it and which communicates by its base with the pipe 4.
FIG. 6 shows a section of the sleeve 16 and of the enclosure 22 enveloping the opening 21. When the external sliding tube 5 j rises in the casing 8, it carries with it the grooved part 20. When this part reaches the bottom of opening 21, if a groove 11 is located opposite the opening 21, it progressively masks the latter, but the mixture of water and gas rises in the envelope 22 and passes through the upper part of the opening 21, which is not closed and descends through the grooves located between the grooves. The passage section of the mixture of water and gas through the opening 21 decreases progressively, which reduces the water flow and slows the rise of the telescopic column just before it hits the upper stop, which has beneficial effect of reducing the kinetic energy of the column and therefore the violence of the shock. When the column is in high stop, the part 20 carrying the splines 11 is in the position shown in FIG. 2. As the opening 21 has a height slightly greater than that of the part 20. the lower end of the opening 21 is located below the part 20 and the water then penetrates directly into the lower end of the external tube 5 ^ and feeds the diffuser 6, without undergoing the pressure drop due to the passage through the grooves 11a.
