Definitions

  • the present invention relates to apparatus for lifting and transporting mutually similar objects of mutually the same shape, such as slabs, e.g. garden slabs, pave ⁇ ment slabs.
  • the apparatus is of the kind which includes a chassis which runs on at least two wheels mounted on a common axle and which is provided with a handle which is used to manoeuvre the chassis and also to manoeuvre a lifting unit that forms part of the apparatus.
  • the lifting unit includes two mutually co-acting gripping arms which have a respective gripping arm mounted on their free ends.
  • U.S.Patent Specification 3 885 688 teaches an apparatus which is supported on two wheels and which is provided with two gripping arms which are of mutually equal length and which have gripping claws mounted on respective ends thereof, one of which claws has an out ⁇ standing edge which when applied to the edge of a slab that has already been laid, causes the claws to release the transported slab.
  • the apparatus is also provided with spring means which functions to lift a bar carry ⁇ ing the gripping arms relative to the chassis of the apparatus, when the apparatus carries no load. Means are provided for steering the bar selectively relative to the chassis.
  • U.S.Patent Specification 3 980 190 A similar apparatus intended for the same purpose is taught by U.S.Patent Specification 3 980 190.
  • two gripping claws are arranged transversely to the direction of movement of the apparatus and are joined together at the one ends thereof by means of a rod which assists in steering the positions of the gripping claws.
  • the Swedish Patent Specification 8603816-3 teaches apparatus which is intended for handling concrete slabs and which comprises a single-axle wheel-cart with a pair of wheels, and a pair of legs provided with grip ⁇ ping devices arranged parallel with the wheel axle.
  • Each of the legs is pivotally mounted at one end there ⁇ of on a shaft about which the the legs can be pivoted in a plane parallel with the wheel axle of the cart.
  • the gripping devices are released from their engagement with a slab, by tipping the cart sideways, in one direction or the other.
  • the object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus for lifting and transporting mutually similar objects of mutually similar shape, such as slabs, which is of a similar kind to the apparatus known from the cited patent specifications, but which is of sim ⁇ pler construction and more readily handled than the known apparatus.
  • one of the gripping arms is journalled on a chassis- mounted lifting arm for movement in a plane at right angles to the wheel axle, and the remaining gripping arm, namely a rearwardly located gripping arm, is move- ably journelled on the front gripping arm. Furthermore, the distance from the gripping claw on the front grip ⁇ ping arm to the journal point between the two gripping arms is longer than the distance from the gripping claw on the rear gripping arm to said journal point.
  • Figure 1 illustrates an inventive apparatus from one side
  • Figure 2 illustrates the apparatus of Fig. 1 from above
  • Figure 3 illustrates in larger scale and from one side a lifting unit which forms part of the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and which carries no load;
  • Figure 4 shows the lifting unit of Fig. 3 in a slab- gripping position (load-position).
  • Figure 5 shows the lifting unit of Figs. 3 and 4 from above.
  • the apparatus illustrated in Figure 1 comprises a chas ⁇ sis 10 provided with two wheels 101 mounted on a common axle 102, a handle 103 and a lifting unit 11 which is pivotally mounted on a lifting arm 104 incorporated in the chassis 10.
  • the lifting unit 11 includes two mutually coacting gripping arms 111, 112, which are provided on each of their respective free ends with a gripping claw 113 and 114.
  • One of the gripping arms namely a front arm as seen from the handle 103, is journalled at a journal point 105 on the lifting arm 104, so as to enable said gripping arm to pivot in a plane perpendicular to the wheel axle 102, i.e. in the plane of the paper.
  • the remaining gripping arm 112 namely a rear arm as seen from the handle 103, is journalled at a journal point 115 on the front gripping arm 111, so as to enable the gripping arm 112 to move in the same plane as the gripping arm 111.
  • the distance of the gripping claw 113 on the front gripping arm 111 to the journal point 115 is longer than the distance of the gripping claw 114 on the rear gripping arm 112 to the said journal point 115.
  • a detachable lever 12 Inserted in the chassis 10 is a detachable lever 12 which is intended for use when taking up slabs.
  • the lever is used to separate a slab from surrounding slabs, so that the gripping claws can be positioned against mutually opposite sides of the slab.
  • the lever can also be used as a handle for facilitating stacking of the slabs one upon the other (relieves the spine) .
  • the apparatus When transporting a slab, the apparatus is moved to the position shown in Figure 1.
  • the lifting unit can be lowered down towards the slab, by raising the handle 103 slightly.
  • the gripping arm 112 to ⁇ gether with its gripping claw,'; is pivoted anti ⁇ clockwise until the distance between the inner surfaces of the claws is slightly greater than the width of the slab.
  • the lifting unit can then be lowered into abut ⁇ ment with the slab, along the whole length of the grip ⁇ ping arms.
  • the handle 103 is subsequently lowered, the slab will accompany this movement due to the wed ⁇ ging action that prevails between the gripping claws and the slab.
  • the apparatus has three wheels moun ⁇ ted on an axle 102 which is common to all wheels, name- ly a wheel 21 located between the two wheels 101. It is found that an apparatus of this configuration is easier to handle.
  • Figure 3 illustrates the lifting unit in larger scale. It will be seen from this Figure that the free ends of the gripping claws 113, 114 are angled slightly in- wards, so as to provide a wedging action when the grip ⁇ ping arms 111, 112 are in line with one another.
  • the gripping arm 112 can be moved between two terminal positions. In the lower terminal position, illustrated in Figure 3, a shoulder 34 on the arm 112 lies against a first mechanical stop 31 mounted on the arm 111.
  • the gripping arms are brought into line with one another and anti-clockwise rotation of the arm 112 to the upper terminal position is limited by the fact that the shoulder 34 then abuts a second mechanical stop 32 mounted on the arm 111.
  • This positional state of the apparatus is shown in Figure 4.
  • a flexible link (chain) 33 Located between the rear gripping arm 112 and the lift ⁇ ing arm 104 (see Fig. 1) is a flexible link (chain) 33 whose length is such that the link will be only just extended or stretched when both gripping claws 113, 114 are in gripping engagement with the side edges of a slab, i.e. the position shown in Figure 4.
  • the handle 103 is rotated anti-clockwise to some extent (see Fig.
  • the illustrated and describ ⁇ ed apparatus can be modified in many ways within the scope of the inventive concept.
  • the flex ⁇ ible link (the chain) 33 can be replaced with a line attached to the arm 112 and drawn through a tube in the arm 104 to a point close to the handle 103, where the end of the line is connected to a displaceable hand ⁇ grip (T-piece), the arrangement being such that the arm 112 is raised when the hand-grip is pulled and drops down gravitationally when the hand-grip is released.
  • journalling of the arm 111 at the journal point 105 can be configured so as to enable the arm 111 to be rotated readily around a contemplated vertical line about ⁇ 3 relative to the normal position. This facilitates the task of bringing a further slab into edge-to-edge abutment with a slab that has already been laid.
