Abstract

In operating an excavator it is useful to be able to change the direction of the accessory, such as the dipper ladle, by turning the accessory in the horizontal plane relative to the dipper arm. By providing an adjustable swivelling joint (4, 6) between dipper arm and accessory turning may be achieved without using any drive for the actual turning. The adjustable swivelling joint substantially comprises an inner ring (4) with transverse grooves (9) and an outer ring (5) arranged to match the inner ring (4), the outer ring being connected with a base plate (6) supporting a coupling device (10-14). On turning, the coupling device will release the inner ring so that it may be turned relative to the outer ring. The force required for the turning is provided by the excavator, which through its movement and with the ladle resting on a firm underlayer forces the ladle (13) with the ladle support (16) to be turned relative to the dipper arm (1). On setting a new position, said position is fixed when the power supply is interrupted, and a spring (12) will return the cone-shaped wedge (10) of the coupling device to the groove or the recess (9).

Description

Adviustal):Le swive:L:Linq joint for an excavator or the like.

The present invention relates to an adjustable swivelling joint for an excavator or the like. To be able to better adapt the movement of an accessory to existing working conditions, the dipper arm of the excavator is provided With an adjustable swivelling joint which is connectable with the accessory.

  Prior art
In operating an excavator, it has been found useful to be able to change the direct on of the accessory by turning the accessory in the horizontal plane relative to the dipper arm. With this possibility cf changing the direction of the accessory ':elative to the dipper arm, there is no immediate need of accessories change, since the same accessory is usable for de digging as well as height and lateral digging. It is nown te provide various types of hydraulically operated rotators for the turning of the accessory, and a number of types are already available on the market.

A disadvantage cf these hydraulically operated rotators is that their height will be relatively high, t 5 cm - 30 cm, which has an effect on the digging movements and limits the performance of the excavator. Further, rotatcr devices are complicated and expensive to install.

  Description of the invention
In order to achieve a change of direction of an accessory relative to a dipper arm of an excavator by means of a device lacking hydraulic or other kind of drive and of a relatively low height of only around 7 cm, an adjustable swivelling joint has been developed, which will be both easy and economical to manufacture and which in use will have a minimal effect on the performance of the excavator.

  Description of the fisnr
Figure 1 is a side vie, partly in cross section, of an adjustable swivelling joint with hydraulic line connectIons and articulately connected with a dipper arm and with the swivelling joint partly engaging an accessory.

Figure 2 is a top view of the adjustable swivelling joint with hydraulic lines.

  Description of an embodiment
The figures show the structure of an adjustable swivelling joint according to the invention By means of bearings, the dipper arm 1 and dipper ladle link 2 of an excavator are articulately connected with the upper part 3 of the swivelling joint, the upper part being fixedly connected with an inner ring 4. The lower part of the swivelling joint essentially comprises an outer ring 5 and a base plate 6 fixedly connected to the outer ring. A circular projecting edge 7 of the inner ring 4 is adapted to fit into a corresponding groove 8 in the outer ring 5. The inner ring 4 and the outer ring 5 thus form a swivelling joint, and the base plate 6 prevents separation of the inner and outer rings.

Along its inner peripheral surface, the inner ring 4 is provided with several transverse grooves 9 arranged to cooperate with the cone-shaped wedge 10 or the like of a coupling device. The coupling device is connected with the base plate and may comprise a spring-balanced electromagnet 11 or a hydraulically or pneumatically operated control means wherein, in the deenergized state, the wedge is inserted in a groove by spring force and wherein, in the energized state, the electromagnet 11 counteracts the spring force, so that the wedge 10 may be removed from the groove 9.

On energizing, the compression spring 12 is thus compressed and the inner ring 4 is released from the coupling device connected with the base plate 6 and the outer ring 5, the inner and outer rings being released from the locking jam and becoming turnable relative to each other for setting of a desired working position for the dipper ladle 13 relative to the dipper arm 1.

The desired working position may now be achieved by means of the different movements of the dipper arm and with the ladle 13 resting on a firm underlayer and the magnet being activated, in that the dipper arm 1 is operated such that the ladle 13 is forced to turn into the desired position, and when this position has been reached the power supply will be interrupted and the spring 12 released, and the wedge 10 will be inserted by spring force in a suitable groove 9, the inner ring 4 having been locked to the base plate 6 and the outer ring 5.

For correct centering of the cone-shaped locking wedge 10 it can be provided with a guiding sleeve 14 arranged between the inner ring 4 and the magnet 11. There may also be a need of sensing the position of the wedge 10 in order to be able to indicate whether the wedge 10 is fully inserted in the groove 9 of the inner ring 4. Through a contact means 15 on the guiding sleeve, the position of the locking wedge 10 may be sensed and the corresponding measuring signal indicated in the excavator.

With this type of adjustable swivelling joint it is possible, from the driver' cab, to turn the ladle a full turn relative to the dipper arm and to lock it in desired positions.

The base plate 6 of the swivelling joint supports a hydraulic or mechanical coupling device for the dipper ladle support 16. The coupling device may be some kind of quick coupling and may partly include a double-acting or singleacting hydraulic cylinder with or without spring function and connected with a locking means in the form of, for example, a sleeve, which is capable of locking or releasing a corresponding means mounted on the dipper ladle support. For coupling of the dipper ladle support 16 of the dipper ladle 13 to the swivelling joint of the dipper arm, the base plate 6 of the swivelling joint with the coupling device is inserted in a recess or the like in the dipper ladle support.

On continued movement of the dipper arm towards the ladle support, the ladle support or the base plate will be turned such that the locking means itself will get into a position for locking the dipper ladle support 16 to the base plate 6, which, if required, will be achieved automatically or manually.
